To be annoyed at 17 month diaries

MrsHowardRoark · 28/10/2014 08:35

I am searching for a new diary for Christmas and every one I find started in August. DP bought me an Organised Mum (that name is another thread) one last year and it really put me off that a third of it was already useless.
What's the point of diaries being formatted like this? You can't buy August to August as the last third would be wasted and you can't buy January to January without the first third being a waste.
Am I being unreasonable to think this is stupid?

YANBU. Get a Filofax and print off/buy exactly what you need.

LetThereBeCupcakes · 28/10/2014 08:41

YANBU AT ALL!

Last year I got a proper January-January one in ASDA. I am tempted by the filofax but it's a big change and I'm scared.

redexpat · 28/10/2014 08:43

Now when i gradusted and needed a.diary that was 18 months they didnt exist, so i think yabu! But not really - it does seem like a waste of resources.

PandaNot · 28/10/2014 08:51

I like those ones because I often plan appointments more than 12 months ahead and so have to use post its, which get lost, before I get my new diary. So I need one that runs aug-jan and I replace it in august, copying future dates into the new one.

FiloFunky · 28/10/2014 09:21

yes yes get a filofax!

finsbury. holborn. malden.

i have the a5 holborn and pocket finsbury! they are just scrumny!

RufusTheReindeer · 28/10/2014 09:30

I agree with panda

I love getting my diary and sticking the little stickers in it from September, that lasts for a week before I get bored

I have masses of stickers!!!! Sad years worth!!!

"What's the point of diaries being formatted like this? "
Aren't they called 'academic diaries', for college/university students, so they start at the start of an academic year?

TrendStopper · 28/10/2014 10:25

I bought a normal diary yesterday from asda. january to january. Have never seen one that is any different.

theposterformallyknownas · 28/10/2014 10:31

YABU there are plenty of January - December the same as academic or 18 months, where are you looking?
Try the stands in the shopping arcades they have all manner of formats and range from a few quid to about £15.

steff13 · 28/10/2014 10:40

Buy a Franklin Planner. They have several options for start dates.

BeyondPreparedForHell · 28/10/2014 10:42

I think the point of the "organised mum" one is that it includes both an academic diary and a jan-dec one, so you can have your normal diary as well as sticking the kids school stuff in there, without having to faff with two diaries :)

BeyondPreparedForHell · 28/10/2014 10:43

Agree with you on the name though!!

MrsHowardRoark · 28/10/2014 15:55

I like the ones with pockets and stickers because they make me feel like I have my shit together and so far they've all been 17/18 month ones.
I'm not talking about academic diaries either as those usually run from August for 12 months. So it seems that some people use them to plan more than a year ahead and then transfer the dates into the new diary after 12 months?
No amount of stickers is going to make me that organised.

I haven't seen 17-18 month ones. I have two on the go at once - I have an academic one for school stuff (mine not theirs), and a jan-jan one for home stuff.

Husband keeps trying to persuade me to do it all digitally instead "you have an ipad, why don't you use that?" but I need stuff actually written down on paper, in pen, otherwise it doesn't happen.

Aherdofmims · 28/10/2014 16:13

How about just using Google calendar?

youareallbonkers · 28/10/2014 16:22

Diaries??? Filofaxes? Are you all living in the dark ages? ;) Most people have smart phones/ipads/ipods etc which all have calendars on them and send you a reminder which a diary doesn't

MrsTerrorPratchett · 28/10/2014 16:28

I use the 18 month ones because i have to plan classes far in advance. Can't you just go online and get a 'normal' diary.

MrsHowardRoark · 28/10/2014 17:02

If you use an 18 month diary do you buy it in August one year and then December the next?

I like the Organised Mum one as it has shopping list space at the side of the page and lots of room for notes. But they all started in August!

I'm so glad it's not just me!

My new diary starts in October so should I just start using it now and abandon my old one? Or wait until January and have three empty months at the start?

It annoys me so much!

theposterformallyknownas · 28/10/2014 17:25

you are

Generalisation there. I bet if you took the worlds population most people wouldn't have smart phones, ipads, ipods they take around.

I have an ipad but I can't fit it in a little bag and can't take the chance of technology failing as my diary is important.
I also don't need a gadget to remind me to look in my diary Shock
They'll be inventing one to shit for us soon, then we won't have to bother doing that for ourselves either.

jamaisjedors · 28/10/2014 17:32

I like 18 mth diaries (but I do work in academia). In June I often need to check dates for September/October or pencil things in.

In September I need to be able to plan ahead to the following January and not wait to buy a diary to schedule things.

I would like to use Google calendar but haven't got round to it yet.

CountDuckulasPoultryGeist · 28/10/2014 17:51

i love my filofax Grin Grin

NotEnoughTime · 28/10/2014 18:06

Stupid Question Alert Blush

Could someone tell me if a moleskin diary is actually made from a mole's skin?

Sorry for derail

BettyFocker · 28/10/2014 18:57

Umm no, NotEnoughTime Grin

MrsHowardRoark · 28/10/2014 19:06

But jama what do you do when it runs out?
Say you bought one this August which runs out in December 2015 do you then buy a new 18 month one that ends in August 2017?
Or, do you have two diaries for 6 months? Or, do you waste 6 months worth of space in either your new or old diary????
I don't get it!
