i work in a well known fastfood restaurant and i am so tired of familes smearing cheeseburgers up the window or just leaving trays on the tables and spilled drinks on the floor and then sauntering off to their cars Angry Angry i dont know if any of you have done this but just a few pointers if you have 1. we dont get paid to clean up after you 2. it makes us laugh at how messy your house and dc must be and 3. we provide bins for a reason. : Disclaimer this is not a post to upset or offend.

Have you tried saying to them "oh gosh do you need a cloth for that"

If they're unshameable (some are) call them cunts in your head

AgentZigzag · 24/10/2014 22:21
Grin

You don't think much of the customers then?

OraProNobis · 24/10/2014 22:22

Well. Sorry about your shit day and sorry you're unhappy but I think you'd find your employer would argue that they DO pay you to clean up after the customer and do whatever else is required to keep the business running. Some people are absolute pigs but this should be no surprise to anyone working with the public - something I've done for 25 years and I have probably seen it all! Getting upset about it won't change anything - you have to find a way to defuse it in your head. Good luck!

natureplantar101 · 24/10/2014 22:23

ita a fast paced job i turn around to do something and their gone Angry Angry i smile at their kids and compliment them and then they turn around and trash the restaraunt the ones who do know how to clean up their trays/table get a big Grin Grin from me and my friends such nice people but out of the 500 average people we serve each day 5 i kid you not clean their trays Hmm Hmm

OP posts:
Caboodle · 24/10/2014 22:23

Oooh I agree...I get cross as a customer when I see another customer leave a mess..but...I bet you do get paid to clean up. Doesn't mean you should have to though.

natureplantar101 · 24/10/2014 22:26

we all asked him and he turned around and said no we dont get paid to clean up the tables we serve food and customers Grin very confusing but mandstory with all fast food restaraunts in the country apart from closing hours when we deep scrub everything to get ready for another torrent of trash the next day Smile

WorraLiberty · 24/10/2014 22:32

People who don't empty their trays are very bad mannered, so I can see why it annoys you.

But surely cleaning up after people is in your job description?

If for example you and your colleagues went the entire day without sweeping stray chips off the floor, you're looking at a huge H&S issue?

Also, when someone doe empty their tray, what about the salt and crumbs left on the table?

Surely you're paid to clean that?

natureplantar101 · 24/10/2014 23:03

yes we do sweep floors and ckean the bathrooms etc but trays arent actually our responsibility its the customers once those trays are empty and stacked on top of a bin then they are our responsibility to clean them the bins are there for customer use to tidy their junk away otherwise we would come out from behind the counter and take dirty trays straight to the kitchen and empty them we do not do this if a bin is there its for your use not ours Smile

PixieofCatan · 24/10/2014 23:07

I get why you're annoyed, I get annoyed as a customer seeing it, but how is it not part of your job? It's expected that customers aren't going to put their trays away, not many do, surely the higher ups realise that we don't live in a lovely world where everybody cleans up after themselves? Confused Surely they should factor in that they need people on the restaurant floor to do that job? If they don't they're in lala land.

bloodyteenagers · 24/10/2014 23:15

So I spill a drink and I am supposed to go and locate the grubby mop and bucket?
Or maybe go and queue up again to get some more tissues, because go straight to the front and you are going to get shouted at by staff and waiting customers.
Last time I was in a fast food place, the bin was full. Suppose I should have emptied that, considering it is what I would do at home.
Oh and what about wiping down tables between customers? Do that as well should we.
Might as well just stay home. less work to do.

Fabulous46 · 24/10/2014 23:18

I wouldn't class a fast food outlet as a restaurant. Sorry! No doubt someone will come along though and quote a dictionary Grin.

It's very bad mannered to leave trays on tables though. There's no need for that as it's not a hardship to out rubbish in a bin. However, you most likely are paid to clear up after people. It will be covered by the "any other duties as required" in your contract. Children spilling things on tables is unavoidable tbh.

TheFantasticFixit · 24/10/2014 23:22

Sorry, but you are talking a load of bollocks OP.

I too have worked in a major fast food outlet, a few years ago. We used to be rota'd on to be responsible for clearing debris, moving trays and wiping tables. I know that both BK and McDonalds do similar with a designated member of staff in the restaurant area to keep things clean. Therefore, it IS part of the job.

It may be that you are a cashier, or 'chef' and so less likely to be responsible for those tasks but regardless, the restaurant needs to be maintained. By the staff working there.

Fast food outlets aren't known for attracting those with high etiquette standards, nor expects it. While you are within your rights to find it annoying, or irritating, surely, surely you might have expected such goings on?!

Darkandstormynight · 24/10/2014 23:23

YANBU. What you've described goes way beyond the cleaning off the tables and seats with a cloth. Kids squishing their cheeseburgers on the window or dumping drinks on the floor and parents getting up and leaving is inexcusable.

Gosh even when I'm in a public lav and I make a mess with the water and soap I find myself cleaning their counter and sink! I know that's ott but I just try to keep things tidy.

RJnomore · 24/10/2014 23:26

Op YANBU.

The most shocking thing I have ever seen is a well dressed woman out with her son and her husband for dinner, at Thr next table to us in a NICE ITALIAN RESTAURANT.

Her small son put some sale on his chips and without a moments hesitation she plucked them off his plate and threw them on the floor underneath the table.

Some people are just pigs. And a whole heap of ridiculousness about "should we just do your job for you, dont you expect this" won't change that.

AgentZigzag · 24/10/2014 23:27

People go to a fast food joint so they don't have to clean up.

Let's face it, it's not going to be because of the bonhomie is it? Grin

I clear up and dispose of our rubbish in the appropriate receptacle wherever we eat, but I do it as a favour to the people working there, not because it's my responsibility (obviously, because it isn't, I can leave it for whoever's job it is).

I used to be a waitress, and them leaving a mess was pretty near the bottom of my rage list on the way they could behave Shock

gentlehoney · 24/10/2014 23:38

If people bin their trays the table is very often re-used without being cleaned first.
If you leave the tray at least there is a slight chance that a grubby cloth will be waved over it when the waiter comes for the tray.

Fabulous46 · 24/10/2014 23:50

RJnomore

NICE ITALIAN RESTAURANT. Do you mean naice restaurant? Grin Why did you feel the need to put it in caps?

bloodyteenagers · 24/10/2014 23:51

Also, calling a fast food place a restaurant isn't helpful.
A restaurant is somewhere you go and people clean up your plates etc. The customer doesn't do this.
Perhaps if you want all the customers to clear up, do something about stop calling these places restaurants. Because they are not.

iwishiwasacat · 24/10/2014 23:56

It's just completely unacceptable to act like a disgusting pig in a restaurant, fast food or not.

If I catch anyone, children or adults, behaving like that I call them out on it.

Fabulous46 · 24/10/2014 23:58

bloodyteenagers (love your name btw). McDonalds call their premises restaurants. I still wonder WHY!

dreamerdoer · 24/10/2014 23:58

YABU. Customer is not being paid, you are. It may not be your favourite part of your job, but keeping the place clean and tidy is obviously staff responsibility, not customers.

Of course it is nice if the customers put things in the bin and try not to spill etc. (I certainly would). But its not their job.

FoxgloveFairy · 25/10/2014 00:05

I take your point that customers should throw away their wrappers etc in the bins provided. The fact that they are in the customer area is a bit of a hint! But the staff do need to clean tables and floors etc. The customer is not responsible for that, unless they have dropped food or,drink etc. Deliberately dumping food on the floor though? Piggery really. Disgusting anywhere. Don't want the food? Discard it with your rubbish.

AgentZigzag · 25/10/2014 00:11

'If I catch anyone, children or adults, behaving like that I call them out on it.'

And you've never come a cropper?

Either you can't eat this special kind of shite at these places very often, or you're not in an urban environment.

(not that the number of shit customers are limited in rural areas)

m0therofdragons · 25/10/2014 00:12

The customers don't have a contract so you can't demand this however, yes, customers should shove stuff in bin and put tray on the pile - which I always do. I'm not going to wipe the table though. What would I wipe it with, do you provide a cloth?
My ex used to leave a mess saying it's their job not mine... mind you he also used to drop litter like if he finished crisps he'd just drop the packet on the floor (as I ran behind picking it all up). It wasn't a long relationship.
