To think that DH is being a bit strange?

He won't eat the top 'pointy' bit of a banana -he breaks almost 1/4 of the banana off and throws it away. His reason - its horrible and all spikey!

Never noticed the spikeyness myself so passing it over to mumsnet. Is it normal to eat the top of a banana or is it normal to break it off and is it indeed spikey as DH suggests?

I can't eat it either. Makes me want to gag. I don't waste that much though!

chockbic · 24/10/2014 18:31

We can assume he doesn't eat pineapple?

I sometimes break the top bit off if it looks brown. Never eat the bottom bit.

AmserGwin · 24/10/2014 18:31

I don't eat that bit either usually, but only take about half an inch off

Boomtownsurprise · 24/10/2014 18:32

I'd agree more about the bottom tbh. Top? Nah that's v weird

raffle · 24/10/2014 18:32

I bite it off and chuck it in the bin, but only a teeny little bite, just to get rid of the pointy tip bit. Not strange at all.

FunkyBoldRibena · 24/10/2014 18:33

What a waste. No, he is ridiculous. Completely ridiculous.

LadyLuck10 · 24/10/2014 18:33

I hadn't thought about it until now but I don't eat the 'ends' of most things. I always break of a bit of banana, eat the second slice from a loaf, cut of ends of a sausage etc. Don't know why I do it Blush

SophiaPetrillo · 24/10/2014 18:33

I have to take that bit off as well, it gives me the boak.

Greengrow · 24/10/2014 18:34

Must have money to burn... what a waste. More for you I suppose.

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 24/10/2014 18:35

I hate that bit too - give DH the top and bottom of all my bananas or throw them in the compost if he's not here Blush

RainbowRabbit33 · 24/10/2014 18:35

I do this! I hate the top bit of the banana! But I don't waste 1/4 of it, just 1cm or so.

I won't say YABU though, DH thinks I'm off my rocker. But then I also peel every tiny piece of pith off tangerines and satsumas, it can take me 45 minutes to eat a small one!

chockbic · 24/10/2014 18:36

Ooh yes can't eat a pithy fruit.

partialderivative · 24/10/2014 18:36

The top bit is where you should start to peel a banana.

I was liberated from parental insistence that a banana should be peeled from it's stalk very recently.

HappyHalloweenMotherFucker · 24/10/2014 18:36

but there is a horrid black spikey bit

some bananas have a blacker, harder, spikier bit than others

I wouldn't take the risk, but I stopped eating bananas some years ago as they are unpleasant

thisusernameisunavailable · 24/10/2014 18:38

He is being U! He should chuck the whole manky thing in the bin

Willitberaaaaspberry · 24/10/2014 18:38

Well, it's a bit like this...

To think that DH is being a bit strange?
BendyMum15 · 24/10/2014 18:39

I have to admit that I don't eat the top if its all squished and I never eat the bottom of a banana.

What is more surprising than this banana based revelation is that I have been with him for 9 years and married for 5 and have never ever noticed it until now. Its like he's a banana top removing ninja!

OP posts:
SquinkiesRule · 24/10/2014 18:40

I used to break off just the pointy bit for Ds when he was little he called it the nubble He still removes the nubble and eats the rest.
I don't eat bananas, I love them, but they don't love me.

TidyDancer · 24/10/2014 18:46

DH is perfectly normal. Anyone who eats the entire banana is a weirdo.

mouselittle · 24/10/2014 18:48

I don't eat the bottom bit of a banana because that can be spiky.
interestingly I read recently that what we assume to be the top of a banana (the bit we peel down) is actually the bottom.
is it the end that you peel that your husband doesn't eat or the other end?
Confused

BendyMum15 · 24/10/2014 18:51

Its the bit by the 'stalk' so the bit you peel down from.

OP posts:
dreamerdoer · 24/10/2014 18:54

I don't eat the bottom bit of the banana (I just leave it in the skin). I eat the top though. I'm really confused by everyone saying the top is spiky? Unless they are considering top and bottom the other way round from me (top = stalk end, as in the bit that's at the top when its hanging from a bunch).

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 24/10/2014 18:55

Monkeys peel them from the bottom. Tbf its an easier way of doing it. Bottom sticky out bit is Vile. Remainder of banana is nice and all eaten.

WerewolfBarMitzvah · 24/10/2014 18:57

I have eaten quite possibly thousands of bananas in my life and have never noticed a particularly pointy end. How have I missed this?!

NorbertDentressangle · 24/10/2014 18:58

DP doesn't like the bottom bit of a banana (the 'bottom' here being the bit at the opposite end to the stalk) because, as a child, he once read about/was told/imagined that someone once found lots of spiders erupting out of eggs in this part!!
