To think that lazy selfish people shouldn't have dogs....

DS stepped in dog shit. It was dark and we didn't real use until he was in the car and we smelled it. His shoe was covered, my car mat was covered and it stunk.
I am sick of dodging dog shit on the streets. I would happily support an increase of dog wardens specifically for removing dogs from owners when a dog is seen fouling and it isn't cleaned up by the owner. There is just no excuse for leaving your dogs mess on the street to inconvenience other people.

Bloody autocorrect. Real use = realise.

YANBU - owners should always pick it up, we have a dog and wouldn't leave the house without bags.

YABU about dogs being removed from their owners, what do you suggest the wardens then do with the dogs.

Missunreasonable · 09/10/2014 21:52

I haven't thought about what they would do with the dogs. Perhaps they could take them to the dog pound (do we have those?) and keep them there until a fine of several hundred pounds, plus daily boarding charge, has been paid.

And they should do the same with people that bag the dog shit and leave the bags in the street/ on bushes etc.

This really winds me up! Dirty bastards.

SaucyJack · 09/10/2014 22:10

YANBU.

I actually came up with a plan just t'other day. When I'm Prime Minister, all dogs will be DNA'd (at their owner's expense) so that any dogshit left lying around can be traced back to the culprits- who can then be heavily fined.

Obviously it wouldn't be foolproof, but it would put a fair few off of just leaving their mess in the street.

MiddletonPink · 09/10/2014 22:13

Phone EH. If it's the same area get others to phone in to.

OOAOML · 09/10/2014 22:41

Saucy I like your DNA idea. Could we have soecial booths where the offending owners could do community service, cleaning dog shit off people's shoes?

3LeetleKeettens · 10/10/2014 12:27

What if someone is in a manic rush and forgets a dog bag, what happens then?

cherrybombxo · 10/10/2014 12:34

YANBU. I'm constantly finding poop bags in my pockets, I seem to have filled every jacket and hoody I own with the things. We also keep a box of them by the door, beside the dog's harness and lead.

I noticed a small mountain of shit on the pavement down from my flat last week and, unless some poor dog has eaten an entire pack of digestive biscuits, it's pretty obvious that it came from the Great Dane a few blocks down. It's absolutely massive and it's disgusting, but there is no proof so I can't do anything more than glare as I pass the owner.

gentlehoney · 10/10/2014 12:35

"What if someone is in a manic rush and forgets a dog bag, what happens then?"

Pull the dog towards the gutter.

DogCalledRudis · 10/10/2014 12:36

I've heard of this DNA idea before, but i hardly imagine it working. You would need to employ a lot of people to go out collecting dog poo and inspecting dna...

Roobix04 · 10/10/2014 12:38

I absolutely hate that! My plan is to fling poo at anyone caught leaving it slight over reaction

tipp2chicago · 10/10/2014 12:41

Being a lazy dog owner myself, I agree with the OP 100%. We always clean up after DDog, but I am sick of not being able to let DD play on the green because of other owners who let their dogs out to roam loose all day.

Nancy66 · 10/10/2014 12:41

dog shit problem is now as bad as it was in the 1970s I'd say. It's EVERYWHERE where I live in London.

clearly fines are not being enforced and dog owners have cottoned on to that.

eveylikesv · 10/10/2014 12:44

YANBU. I think you should be able to go into dog owners home, shit in the middle of their leaving room and go home. Shit for shit.

whois · 10/10/2014 12:49

Yeah, DNA testing followed by a huge fine and the owners also have their faces shoved into a pile of their dog's poo.

HoneyDragonMumshnet · 10/10/2014 12:49

It's supposedly an instant fine of £1000 if someone is caught.

Bear in mind how much dog poo is on our streets (judged by the rate of threads on here)

Now that means a substantial amount of people should have received a fine. We should know of someone who has, surely?

You see less dog poo in countries where the existing laws are actually enforced.

HoneyDragonMumshnet · 10/10/2014 12:50

And it's not all dog owners.

SaucyJack · 10/10/2014 12:50

Yeah you would rudi, but it could be outsourced to a private firm with all running costs covered by fines.

Any unpaid fines would be enforceable by court action. No excuses for dog shit.

StepDoor · 10/10/2014 12:50

Yanbu. It is disgusting.

Numanoid · 10/10/2014 12:51

YANBU, no excuse for leaving dog mess behind.

I haven't thought about what they would do with the dogs. Perhaps they could take them to the dog pound (do we have those?) and keep them there until a fine of several hundred pounds, plus daily boarding charge, has been paid.

I think this ^ is a little unreasonable. Although it's disgusting to leave dog mess and not pick it up, it doesn't warrant taking the dog off the owner as the animal isn't suffering because of it. And you will have a high number of people who either can't afford, or wouldn't want to pay, the fine and boarding charge, so would just leave their dog in the pound.

poolomoomon · 10/10/2014 13:13

Yanbu. This problem hasn't gone away. For whatever reason (better advertisement?) littering has got tonnes better. It was such an issue when I was younger, I remember the streets practically being lined with it. Now I barely ever see litter on the ground which is good, it's a lot better. I think littering has become taboo like smoking, most people are ashamed to do it and don't want to.

The dog shit thing needs to go the same way but how? It's AWFUL even having to look out for dog shit when you're walking let alone missing it and stepping in it or running the pram wheels through it . I actually had to practically ruin a pair of my DD's shoes washing them in the machine once because I could not fully get shit and stench off Angry.

There's also a dog that keeps shitting on my front lawn which is vile. I'm not the biggest fan of dogs in general, this is just another reason not to like them in my eyes even though it's not the dogs fault. What sort of owner let's their dog repeatedly shit on someone's lawn and not pick it up though? Infuriating. And no, I don't have anyone holding any grudges against me and it is of dog variety not human Wink.

Does anyone know anyone who has actually got the £1000 fine for not picking the shit up? There's no one around to enforce it really is there?

TzuByTwo · 10/10/2014 13:15

YANBU. We have three dogs, and have always cleaned up after them. I never leave the house without my bag, so I keep dog baggies in there at all times. That way, I always know where to find one. More often than not, they are in my coat pockets as well.

We have several people in our area who just can't seem to be bothered at all, and it drives me up the wall. My husband likes to offer bags to people he catches, but they tend to swear at him and walk off.

mausmaus · 10/10/2014 13:22

yanbu
but not sure what would be a reasonable solution.

my (probably unreasonable) opinion is that dogs should be banned as pets.
tbh many dog owners can't be arsed have difficulties keeping a dog happy and healthy and well trained.
