To think that lazy selfish people shouldn't have dogs....

DS stepped in dog shit. It was dark and we didn't real use until he was in the car and we smelled it. His shoe was covered, my car mat was covered and it stunk.
I am sick of dodging dog shit on the streets. I would happily support an increase of dog wardens specifically for removing dogs from owners when a dog is seen fouling and it isn't cleaned up by the owner. There is just no excuse for leaving your dogs mess on the street to inconvenience other people.

Ban dogs, you get more cats. Then more cat shit and less wild life.

OOAOML · 10/10/2014 13:34

Problem with the fines is I think the warden has to observe the dog leaving the deposit and the owner walking off. I live in a major city but the environmental wardens are hardly ever seen where I am, they seem to spend most of their time in the city centre (keeping it nice for the tourists, which is important for the local economy, although I'd prefer they did a bit more for the rest of us as well). I also think quite a few people near me just let their dogs out, and have no knowledge of where it has pooped.

Although I do really wonder about those people who go to all the trouble of bagging it and then leave it in the middle of the pavement. I would have thought that picking up warm turds through a thin plastic barrier and then tying a knot in the bag would be the most unpleasant part of the process - walking to a nearby bin holding the bag I don't see as too much of a problem after that.

OOAOML · 10/10/2014 13:39

My dad once shovelled up dog poo (after repeatedly talking to the owner about it), bagged it and took it round under cover of darkness to leave on the offender's path.

MyFabulousBoys · 10/10/2014 13:42

Yanbu they are disgusting and should have it smeared over their front door. It makes going to parks repellent. The worst around here are the young men with status dogs and big fucking attitudes. I was too scared to confront one I saw leave the poo recently though.

IgnoreMeEveryOtherFuckerDoes · 10/10/2014 13:43

They need to get in private firms like they do for car parks.

Eva50 · 10/10/2014 13:55

We have very little dog poo on the pavements around here. I can't remember the last time I saw one. All the owners can be seen carrying their little (filled) poo bags or large sized in my case as I have a Labrador I don't think we have a lower than average number of dogs. It could be that because so few are not picked up it encourages those who may otherwise have left it. Does that even make sense?

Jayne35 · 10/10/2014 14:00

I hate this too. DH and I were 10 minutes in to our dog walk recently and he didn't have a bag (convinced he put it in his pocket) so I waited by the poo with the dog while he went home to get a bag.

Missunreasonable · 10/10/2014 14:31

What if someone is in a manic rush and forgets a dog bag, what happens then?

Then they get fined / penalised in whatever way is deemed appropriate. Forgetting bags is not good enough.
We can apply forgetfulness to all manner of situations but it doesn't mean it is ok. If you have a dog you are responsible for cleaning up after it. Nobody would take a baby out and let it shit in the floor and then leave the shit there because they forgot to take a nappy.

I think there is something in that Eva. There are some streets here that are really bad, and I imagine there is a sense of 'well, nobody else is bothering so why should I?'.

I know that I wouldn't want to pick up poo in a bag, but that's one reason among many that I don't have a dog. Presumably people who choose to own dogs know that regular poo is a feature.

Missunreasonable · 10/10/2014 14:34

I also think quite a few people near me just let their dogs out, and have no knowledge of where it has pooped.

Those people really shouldn't have dogs. Dogs are domestic animals and should be kept under the control of the owner at all times. People who just let their dogs roam around the streets unsupervised should be banned from owning a dog.

My dd stepped in dog poo last weekend. In the middle of a busy street in town, no less. Some poor person had obviously stepped in it first as it had been smeared across the pavement. It was obviously fresh and stank. Utterly disgusting Angry It gave me the rage I can tell you.

I don't have any good ideas about how to stop people doing this but I swear to god, if I see someone let their dog poo anywhere and walk off without cleaning it up, I'm going to pick it up myself, follow the dirty bastard home and dump it on their bloody doorstep.

MissBattleaxe · 10/10/2014 16:05

What if someone is in a manic rush and forgets a dog bag, what happens then?

If you've got time to take your dog for a walk, you've got time to a) grab some bags or b) leave bags in all your coat pockets.

MissBattleaxe · 10/10/2014 16:08

The fining system doesn't work because it's so difficult to catch owners in the act. I think people who don't pick up make sure nobody is looking or take their dogs out at night.

I actually agree with the DNA system but I don't know how it would be funded or implemented. All I know is that something enforceable must be done as threatening with big fines doesn't work.

Either way I think if you don't want to pick up, don't have a dog. Dog licensing would be a start.

Sweetpea01 · 10/10/2014 16:20

Found dog poo right outside my front gate Angry

We have two large breeds but it definitely wasn't from them! I always take bags out with us even though our dogs 9/10 times only go to the toilet in the flagged part of our yard (they actually wait to get home).

I hate not being able to trust that my children can run and play on the grass at parks without worrying about them stepping in this!

Legionofboom · 10/10/2014 16:24

Round here I see the following again and again:
Dog is off the lead
Owner turns around and checks dog is following and notices dog is preparing to poop.
Owner quickly turns back and continues walking (although a little more slowly) but does not, under any circumstances, turn back around until dog has caught up with them allowing them to walk away because they didn't see it. Angry

deraila · 10/10/2014 16:31

i live just by a green area and we loads of crap around here on the footpaths towards it. i feel so sorry for the houses right beside the green with pedestrian areas leading to it as i know they were v, ££££s when they went on the market.

some people just dont care and those of us with small kids suffer most.

today, i was over the moon when i saw two dog owners carry bags of poo away with the. i almost thanked them but then thought "they should be doing it anyway".

Thing is, if you see someone walk away from a pile of crap, Id be worried they might single my road out and use it just to be spiteful.

Didactylos · 10/10/2014 16:31

YANBU

just got in from the slalom of shite that is our pavement, ad was congratulating myself on clean pram wheels to realise that DS stepped in some anyway. Its got to the point here that pedestrians go around warning each other about spills and do elaborate single file manoeuvres rather than pass each other Angry

deraila · 10/10/2014 16:31

legion i watched something like that today.

HamishBamish · 10/10/2014 16:32

YANBU. Not just because of dog shit on the streets, but if owners are lazy about that they're likely lazy about how they care for their animals too. Pets are a huge commitment and I think a lot of people get a dog without thinking it through properly. It's a completely different way of living, everything needs to revolve around the animal and rightly so.

I don't know about removing the animals from their owners though. Surely that would end up with loads of homeless pets being put down.

ArcheryAnnie · 10/10/2014 16:36

YANBU.

The ones I can't understand are those who put the poo in a little bag - and then leave it on the street, possibly by a tree.

ArcheryAnnie · 10/10/2014 16:37

legion take a pic on your phone of the crouching dog and send it to the council!

EggsAreRound · 10/10/2014 16:37

I have strongly considered carrying gloves and, when someone fails to pick up the shit, picking it up with my gloved hand and smearing it all over the dog. They'll be taking it home then.

HappyAgainOneDay · 10/10/2014 17:14

What about this idea? Take a photo if you see a dog defecating with the owner there but looking away, immediately take another of the owner walking away with the pile of poo left there in the same place. Provide photographs or take 'phone / camera to Environmental Heath or Police or Council or whose responsibility is and try to activate them into doing something - like a big fine. If nothing happens, contact the local paper. If nothing happens, contact the national press.
