Because I'm not!
Today bumped into a friend (s) and her friend (a)-who I've met socially once or twice, was pushing ds along in the pram and they both waved hello. A booms 'bloody hell! You're SUCH a dwarf! Youre bloody tiny pushing that pram, bit tall for you isnt it!'
Fwiw I'm 5 ft 2. I know I'm small but there is absolutely nothing wrong with me. I fricking hate people commenting on my height, just find it knocks the wind out of my sails and its downright rude.
I was brought up to never comment on someone's appearance unless it was to compliment. I wish is was a rare occurance but it was practically every day through school/uni and about monthly now.

God, that's really off - you're 3 inches bigger than a dwarf.

That 3 inches makes all the difference Grin

(I have 2 inches to keep me from being as tall as a Dwarf)

MostAmused · 18/09/2014 17:10

It's extremely rude, YANBU!

Angelto5 · 18/09/2014 17:11

My dm is your height and when someone comments on it she says
"Great things come in small packages" Smile

bigTillyMint · 18/09/2014 17:12

DD is 5'2" and I would be horrified if someone called her a dwarf.

DMIL is 4'10" and I wouldn't think of her being a dwarf either, despite me being 5'8"

notagainffffffffs · 18/09/2014 17:20

I woyld just nevwr dream to comment on someone's body shape etc, after all its not something I can help or that I have chosen. I just raised my eye brows and said 'not even a hello how are you first? !'

I'm 5'4". I refer to myself as a midget, but this is mainly to blackmail my husband into doing things for me.

MarchEliza · 18/09/2014 17:26

I am the same size as you and it happens to me all the time. Perfectly nice friends of mine seem to think its totally acceptable to bang on about how freakishly short I am and call me a hobbit etc. I know they don't mean anything by it but it doesn't make me feel great.

I wouldn't dream of saying anything similar to them and some of them are far from physical perfection...

VivaLeBeaver · 18/09/2014 17:28

I'm 5ft2" and have never been called short, a dwarf, etc. oddly enough I don't think of myself as been short either.

Its only if some short person mentions that they're 5ft2" that I think "blimey, am I that short"!

LadyLuck10 · 18/09/2014 17:29

Yanbu, I'm 5'3", a size 6 and petite. People still say 'it must be so nice that you can still shop in the kids department'Hmm. Ffs.

YouTheCat · 18/09/2014 17:31

I'm 4ft11.

I think calling someone a dwarf is pretty bloody offensive in the same way as using the words 'retard' and 'spaz' is.

I don't really have a problem with 'hobbit' as it's a fictional creation and I do have hairy feet.

llwynogbach · 18/09/2014 17:31

I'm 4'10" this happens to me ALL the time. "Omg you're so tiny" "aren't you cute" I once manage to go out with someone with a fetish about small people (that ended apruptly) I HATE it. You're right I never comment about people's appearances to them, it's rude. So why is it acceptable to do it to me grrrrr. It really winds me up.

RevoltingPeasant · 18/09/2014 17:32

I'm 5ft 3 1/4 inches - not counting or anything - and DH calls me 'the dwarf' Hmm

poolomoomon · 18/09/2014 17:33

Officially dwarf is anything less than 4 foot 10. You're a good four/five inches away from dwarf status. You're also only two inches shorter than the average Uk woman so seriously, you're fine and they're rude and annoying. 5 foot 2 isn't that short anyway, my Nan is 5 foot 3 and I've never particularly viewed her as a short woman.

Also I believe dwarfism is a medical condition defined by short limbs disproportionate to the body. So being 4'10 does not make one a dwarf. Like my dp says. I'm efficient in height :)

ouryve · 18/09/2014 17:35

YANBU. It's pretty offensive, to be honest. Never mind that 5'2 isn't all that short. And uninvited comments about people's physical attributes are just plain rude.

And not all people of short stature are comfortable with the term applied to themselves, either.

Gl0ssy · 18/09/2014 17:36

She must see dwarves every where she goes your friend!

ouryve · 18/09/2014 17:37

MIL is 4'9. Short is a perfectly adequate descriptor, where one is needed.

Gl0ssy · 18/09/2014 17:37

vivalabeaver, snap! that's how i think

ithoughtofitfirst · 18/09/2014 17:40

I'm 5'5 and people tell me i'm short. If someone called me a dwarf though i think i'd definitely twat them.

supersop60 · 18/09/2014 17:41

I am 5'2" and have referred to myself as 'short arse' when I need something from a high shelf! My niece is 4'10" and she is known as the Pocket Rocket!

SublimeCorpse · 18/09/2014 17:41

I'm 5ft 1in but I reckon I look shorter coz I'm fat Grin

Dp ribs me about it all the time and it does grate a bit.

SunshineOutdoors · 18/09/2014 17:43

I'm 5'2" and there's nothing wrong with being that, or any other height. I love being petite (things always sound better in French)

micah · 18/09/2014 17:44

Between 5'2 and 5'6 is average height for a woman though isn't it?

I wouldn't even think 5'2 is particularly short.

How tall was she then? 6'4? If you're a dwarf what does that make her?

ChelsyHandy · 18/09/2014 17:48

Next time you see her, go up to her and say "Oh my goodness! You're HUGE! Don't you feel really awkward and clumsy, being so big and taking up so much space? What a shame you're not lovely and petite like me".

But you wouldn't of course. Because that would be rude. And unkind. And untrue (apologies to any people bigger than 5 feet 2). I have noticed a very few very tall women who ahem don't have much else going for them in the looks department try to make a big thing about their height giving them superiority.
