To not do the ice bucket challenge

Morethanalittlebitconfused · 22/08/2014 21:27

I've not been nominated so it's a moot point really but if I were nominated I point blank wouldn't do it

DH thinks I'm being unreasonable on this, am I?

OP posts:
spookyskeleton · 22/08/2014 21:31

Me too, just like I didn't do the make up free selfie. Seems an excuse to jump on the bandwagon for celebs but is anyone actually donating to the charity?

Username12345 · 22/08/2014 21:31

YANBU

The whole thing smacks of 'LOOK AT ME' and faddy, rather than people actually wanting to raise awareness of ALS.

AnnField · 22/08/2014 21:33

I've just been nominated. By my grandad. I'm not doing it and I don't care what anyone thinks. Didn't do the no make up selfies either. I already donate to charities of my own choosing when I can.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 22/08/2014 21:34

No one with a shred of diginity should do this stupid challenge. Thankfully Obama refused. Unlike POsh Spice and Colleen Rooney. Says it all.

Darkesteyes · 22/08/2014 21:35

Wonder how many people have already had buckets of ice water thrown over them by someone else without consenting to it.

ThisFenceIsComfy · 22/08/2014 21:36

I find these trends weird. No one actually seems to be donating anything really.

TheFillyjonk · 22/08/2014 21:36

No. I have. Raynaud's so I would really suffer for it. I also think it's attention-seeking and I wonder how many who've done it have even donated...

I'm happy to make a donation and publicise that.

TheFillyjonk · 22/08/2014 21:37
  • I have Raynauds
Mintyy · 22/08/2014 21:37

Yanbu. Sheep, the lot of them. Just awful.

Darkesteyes · 22/08/2014 21:37

Filly i would be reporting it as assault.

ToddleWaddle · 22/08/2014 21:42

I do wonder if half the people doing it are aware it was even originally for motor neurone disease.
Have seen some really undeserving charities IMO nominated by family in law.
Winds me up everytime I open my Facebook!

milkysmum · 22/08/2014 21:45

Well my dc both did it and loved it! We text donatedSmile. I did fib and tell me it was 'against the rules' to nominate mummy though! Shock

ForalltheSaints · 22/08/2014 21:45

I wouldn't. If someone else was doing it for a charity I'd sponsor them.

Kirsty40 · 22/08/2014 21:53

My mums has ALS, and it is a really horrible terminal illness currently without any treatment or cure. I am really glad this ice bucket challenge is both raising awareness and money about this illness. Regardless of how irritating the celebrities doing the challenge are, if it helps to find a cure it will be worthwhile.

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 22/08/2014 21:54

Seriously? Who cares? Do it if you want, don't if not. Donate if you see fit, don't if you can't or don't wish to. I'm not sure why people feel the need to get lathered up about it. I may be projecting a little as I've just had to hide a few people on FB for this.

PrimalLass · 22/08/2014 21:57

No one has asked me. I feel sad about that.

Mouldypineapple · 22/08/2014 21:57

My dd has done it. she did put a video of herself on YouTube doing it but first explained (on the video) what it's all about and how the ice experience is what ALS/Motor Neurone Disease sufferers feel some of the time and therefore how difficult their lives can be. I didn't even realise that's what it was all about! She donated some money to the charity too.
Too much celebrity hype and not enough explanations I think.

Darkesteyes · 22/08/2014 21:58

Diseases what im getting "lathered up about" is the fact that there will be idiots who go about throwing ice water over people without consent which is assault. There will be twunts who find this funny

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 22/08/2014 21:58

Thisfence there's a lovely video of Patrick Stewart writing a cheque on youtube... I love him....

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 22/08/2014 22:00

Is anybody actually participating in non-consentual ice bucket throwing? I agree, that's worthy of lathering up. Consentual ice bucket throwing, like the OP refers to, isn't worth the mental energy!

pictish · 22/08/2014 22:01

No yanbu. I'd say no too.

TobyZiegler · 22/08/2014 22:01

I've done it. I was nominated and I donated and did it. It was funny. It raises money. It raises awareness.

Foxy800 · 22/08/2014 22:02

I havent been nominated and wont be doing it if i am.Like others I didnt do the make up free selfies either but it doesnt mean I dont support charities in another way. Was a little worried I would be on my own saying no though.x

JohnCusacksWife · 22/08/2014 22:09

Wow...so many po faced people. My DDs were nominated and did it and yes we donated - once to Macmillan and once to MND. The girls were chuffed to be nominated, thought it was great fun and understood what it was about. Do it or don't as you wish but it's for a good cause and I think it's a bit sad & cynical that you dismiss everyone doing it as attention seeking and lacking in dignity.

Picturesinthefirelight · 22/08/2014 22:12

I wouldn't do it but I quite like the fact that groups/celebrities do it to raise money

We went to see Charlie & the Chocolate factory last night & at the end if the show they announced that some of the cast had done it & we were asked to donate into buckets as we exited the theatre.
