To be annoyed with the ice challenges...

I am all for charity. I consider, pick and choose charities to support and do that in a way I see fit.

I am annoyed by people making the presumption of challenging me or others to this ice bucket thing that should be done within 24 hours.

I may get flamed here. But, a friend did the challenge and then just publically announced on FB that she challenged me without warning! WTH?! In addition, I am so against this way of raising money through public embarresment, that I refuse to reply! Now she is mad at ME!

Grrrrrrrr!

Am I being unreasonable?

I think that both you and your friend must be teenagers.

MM5 · 22/08/2014 07:10

Teenagers? Why? I can assur you I have left my teenage years 20+ years ago.

Just quietly don't do it. There's no obligation to.

Although I applaud the spirit behind the campaign, it's not really my kind of thing so if any of my friends take it into their heads to nominate me, I won't be doing it.

MM5 · 22/08/2014 07:17

I have just remained quiet. Will continue to do so.

Good plan I think.

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 22/08/2014 07:25

I already told my DP when he jokingly said he'd nominate me I'd not be doing it. I'll donate to Wateraid instead. Yes it's raised lots of money for various charities (it seems you can donate to whoever you like in this country) but call me a killjoy but it seems like such a huge waste of fresh clean water when so many people in the world are seriously lacking it.

Like I said, killjoy Sad

shakethetree · 22/08/2014 07:33

YANBU - I hate pushy people at the best of times, but to send you on a guilt trip over charity. Nice. Hmm

& what's teenage about this? the only people I've seen doing it have all been middle-aged.

TheReluctantCountess · 22/08/2014 07:42

Not everyone has spare cash to give and these nominations make me feel bad.

pictish · 22/08/2014 07:46

Yanbu. It's the most inane trend I've seen in a long time. Besides, if I'm getting a bucket of iced water thrown over my head, someone will be paying me!

It's not even particularly amusing. If you've seen one, you've seen them all.

If you want to donate to charity then do, no need for the performance.

Leela5 · 22/08/2014 07:51

Just don't do it then, it's not a big deal

LadyLuck10 · 22/08/2014 07:53

Yabu you don't HAVE to do it. It's not compulsoryConfused

MM5 · 22/08/2014 07:57

I won't be doing it. I have remained silent to her about this. But, she is kicking up a fuss, which I am also ignoring publically.

I am just annoyed by the presumption of some people that this is ok.

This was just somewhere to rant about it as I have remained quiet on FB.

LadyLuck10 · 22/08/2014 07:59

Your friend is then being rude for publicly going on about it. Change your fb settings so you can approve posts to your timeline so it won't pop up.

insancerre · 22/08/2014 08:02

I must have like minded friends as I have not been nominated , seen anyone else nominated or even mention it on facebook

MM5 · 22/08/2014 08:02

Good idea Lady. Didn't think of that.

deepbluetr · 22/08/2014 08:11

You don't have to get involved. I had an abusive ex husband who threatened suicide if I left him.
I still left.

Don't be guilt tripped.

HappyAgainOneDay · 22/08/2014 08:39

I wouldn't do it. I know only what I've seen on Facebook but think it's a ridiculous way to raise money in that a choice is given: be wet and cold or donate. I don't want to do either so should not be embarrassed into one of the options. If I were nominated, I would not feel as friendly towards the nominator. He/she would go down in my estimation.

Mrsjayy · 22/08/2014 08:48

Yanbu it is bloody ridiculous and adults bowing to peer pressure ADULTS ! Half the people doing it wont donate some will have no clue what its about it is getting on my wick

Roussette · 22/08/2014 08:55

I just get fed up with overpaid slebs filming themselves for self promotion with this icebucket thing. They could just quietly give a donation to the charity concerned. But no, they have to film themselves and post it all over social media to show how cool and right on they are.
This morning I'm sat here and up comes Victoria Beckham showing us how brave she is with her husband and sons chucking water over her. So what? Go away.
I hate this sort of thing.

Mrsjayy · 22/08/2014 09:00

It's all annoying maybe its just some of us being miserable sods I just dont get it another charity has jumped on it dont do it for them do it for us instead Hmm

LadyStark · 22/08/2014 09:01

I'm not sure many of the celebs who have done it need it for promotional purposes, aren't they just helping to raise awareness?

Victoria Beckham is hardly someone who can't get publicity if she needs it! Ditto most of the other I have seen.

OP, your friend sounds like an idiot but that doesn't mean there is no value in this campaign. It wouldn't be my first choice of campaign but the increase in donations to ALS/MND is in the tens of millions of dollars and that is a good thing.

Mrsjayy · 22/08/2014 09:03

Yes its a good thing but the nomination s and then pressure to do it is silly and I can guarzntee some of the show offs didnt donate to any charity just want to show off on facebook

Groovee · 22/08/2014 09:05

I was nominated and because of my chronic illness, I am unable to partake. My condition was compared to a headache then there has been a number of statuses of how selfish I was. I also refuse to donate to McMillan so donated to MND and that's been another sly digs on the statuses.

Dh commented on their statuses that it may just be cold water to them and to stop the digs.

Belittled for being ill. That is why they are acquaintances and not friends.

Mrsjayy · 22/08/2014 09:08

It is initially mnd charity anyway why are mcmillian elbowing in. Aggressive behaviour is hardly charitable I would tell them all to get a grip groovee

MM5 · 22/08/2014 09:30

Good to know I am not the only one.
