To be annoyed with the ice challenges...

I am all for charity. I consider, pick and choose charities to support and do that in a way I see fit.

I am annoyed by people making the presumption of challenging me or others to this ice bucket thing that should be done within 24 hours.

I may get flamed here. But, a friend did the challenge and then just publically announced on FB that she challenged me without warning! WTH?! In addition, I am so against this way of raising money through public embarresment, that I refuse to reply! Now she is mad at ME!

Grrrrrrrr!

Am I being unreasonable?

It wouldn't be my first choice of campaign but the increase in donations to ALS/MND is in the tens of millions of dollars and that is a good thing

I agree and if it raises awareness, even better.

However there is only so much money to go round and it could be that donations to ALS are diverting donations from other charities because of the huge success of this PR campaign

The only two people I know who have done it are my teenage DD and OH's teenage DD. He got to throw the iced water and I was on towel duty. Respective brothers filmed.

But I wouldn't do it myself and I'm glad I'm not on Facebook.

Happy to donate to the girls' charities, though. That's enough for me. And I certainly don't feel guilty.

LineRunner · 25/08/2014 17:55

They both chose ALS /MND by the way.

If you are able and unwilling, no it doesn't look good. People will probably think you're a kill joy and selfish. They're allowed to.

You're allowed to not participate.

I got nominated, and I'll be dumping ice on my head later today, because it means something to the person who nominated me. He has knew someone with it and did it for them.

It's just a fun charity thing. Don't do it if you want, but don't think it makes you superior to refuse it either.

PS. Water in Africa is in short supply because of the poor filtering and waste management systems. It has nothing to do with how much water you use over in your own country. You may take that off your reasons now. Just own up and say you don't want to.

Darkesteyes · 25/08/2014 18:13

Im donating but not doing the ice thing. The wonderful thing about being in my forties is I long ago stopped caring about how i look to others and what other people think a long time ago.

Sorry for hijack

Scottish teenager dies during ice bucket challenge.

WeHateAmy · 25/08/2014 18:23

I've seen the videos but haven't been nominated.

I'm not really sure how it works, any more than I was sure how the no-make-up thing was meant to work.

Who donates, and when?

Does the person who gets nominated make a donation when they receive their nomination, then do the challenge and put forward someone else who then has to donate, do the challenge and nominate the next person, and so on?

Or does everyone who watches the video of their friend doing the challenge then donate? Are you meant to donate after every video you watch?

And why do most of the videos include water but no ice? I haven't seen a single person on my Facebook list use ice in their buckets, it's all cold water.

ChillieJeanie · 25/08/2014 18:33

Much as I enjoyed Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston's videos, I think nails it.

Assuming the linking thing works...

I was at a hotel at the weekend and there was a bunch of loud drunk boorish guests largeing it up at a table near to us. Every other word was fuck etc. Hmm The only male in the group emptied the ice bucket over the head of one of the women (not his partner, she was someone else.) He was all "Bwaaa haaa haaa it's that fahkin ice bucket challenge innit?" All the rest of the group thought it hilarious and the woman who had had the ice tipped on her made brave attempts to laugh it off (I was reluctantly impressed with how well she managed) but eventually she left with them all still braying with laughter over it. She was one of the dominant people in the group but it seemed to me as if they had suddenly all turned on her and started bullying her. If she had walked out past where DD and I were sitting I might have asked her if she was OK but she went off in the opposite direction.

Just all seems like an excuse for twatty behaviour.

Darkesteyes · 25/08/2014 21:23

And yet ppl on another thread denied that something like that would ever happen Balloon.

lomega · 25/08/2014 21:28

I am glad I'm not the only one that finds this annoying. I've ignored all faddy challenges though because I DO give to charity regularly anyway, and will pick and choose which ones I give to without being bullied into tipping ice over my head or not wearing makeup for a day. I have no problem with people raising awareness of illnesses, collecting for charity, doing sponsored runs etc but when people 'nominate' me to do stupid shit within 24 hours it just really ticks me off. Much rather just give to the charities from my pocket

Nanny0gg · 25/08/2014 21:35

Interesting perspective...

pictish · 25/08/2014 21:41

See...you're all getting pissed off with it now.
Get off my screen, lemmings!

deakymom · 25/08/2014 22:04

do people sponsor you for it or do you just do it?

BalloonSlayer · 25/08/2014 22:07

Haven't read that thread Darkest but these people were Le Twats Drunkene Extraordinarie (Disclaimer: I may not have got A* for French) so I would not include them in the category of "normal human behaviour." Sad

fifi669 · 25/08/2014 22:15

You may not be able to see the ice in some challenges as they've let it melt. Bung ice in water and you've got standard water with hard bits. Let it melt and the waters a lot colder. That's what we did anyway...

Awks · 25/08/2014 22:17

Pictish did you just see mine :)

pictish · 25/08/2014 22:19

Awks - no sorry...your what?

Awks · 25/08/2014 22:24

have tagged you on fb :)

Willabywallaby · 25/08/2014 22:24

Does anyone have the text to donate to MND charity? I would like give a donation but can only see the Macmillan one all over FB.

FedUpWithFriends · 25/08/2014 22:27

Yanbu. I've been nominated but I'm pretending not to have seen it.

I have a health condition, cold will make me hurt and it will take as long time to warm up and I'll waste energy trying to get warm and feel exhausted after. I'd rather raise awareness for my illness than the latest fad where every one is jumping on the band wagon.
