In being extremely disappointed with my Jo Malone candle!

I've been after one for ages but couldn't justify the price as double what I pay for Yankees. I've recently been in holiday and come across the Jo Malone shop on the airport so treated myself. The bag smelt amazing and i was so pleased I got it home in one piece.
I got home and after a sleep decided to light it only to discover it hardly has any smell to it Shock
I feel so let down and quite stupid in front of my dh after me raving about how good they are and make your home smell amazing.

I love JM candles precisely because they are not so full on smell wise, as a Yankee candle. They are subtly and beautifully scented not an assault on the senses.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 12/08/2014 19:04

I love candles and read lots of reviews stating how dab JM candles are, I'd be pissed off as well as they're ££. Sad

Diptiqye are brilliant and heavenly.

At jo Malone prices,I'd expect the sent to knock me out. I have a few of her perfumes but they don't have any lasting power either so I have stopped buying. As for candles,I will stick to Yankee, kringle and scensy xx

*scent

Eminybob · 12/08/2014 19:09

I agree. I'd never pay that price for any candle but I got one as a birthday present and was overwhelmingly disappointed. It didn't smell of anything. I did like the little pack of Jo Malone matches though.

SinglePringle · 12/08/2014 19:15

I think the strength of the scent was declined since Jo Malone left the company / it was sold.

If you like the Lime Basil and Mandarin the try the lime candle by True Grace - a dead ringer (but stronger) for about £25.

But YY to Diptique being beautifully scented.

douchbag · 12/08/2014 19:31

Eminbob I didn't even get the matches with it Hmm I've reasoned with myself though that the reason I didn't get them is because I was about to board a plane but still disappointed. I'm just glad I didn't pay full price.

I've not smelled jo malone but I've got some candles from the St Eval candle Co which are lovely. The nettle one in particular smells amazing. Very reasonably priced too.

Cleanthatroomnow · 12/08/2014 19:47

Agree. The one I was given as a present gave off a lot of smoke.

Sallystyle · 12/08/2014 19:50

I used to love them.

The last one I got had no real smell to it either. Certainly couldn't smell it when I walked into the room.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/08/2014 19:53

Can anyone recommend one that has a really lovely roses smell to it please?

justanotherbiscuit · 12/08/2014 19:58

I've just put out a Yankee candle. it's the 2nd time it's been lit and my head is pounding along with sore shoulders and feel sick. This happened last time I lit it.

I don't own a Jo Malone candle but my mum does and it's beautiful. Fresh instead of sickly to me.

But they're expensive, so you should return it if you don't think it's worth it. Treat yourself to 2 Yankee candles you'll enjoy Smile

goodasitgets · 12/08/2014 20:16

My friend makes dupes of JM in wax tart form Wink and they are MEGA strong. I prefer hers

Namechangearoonie123 · 12/08/2014 20:20

Make your own, it's stupidly easy and you can use soy wax which is much better to breathe in - no dirty paraffin ceiling marks

Good candles like Diptique have 10-12% fragrance and they use night quality (but easily purchased) essential oils.

Honestly, it's probably the easiest thing to do. My house is filled with candles I make and I light them every day.

Namechangearoonie123 · 12/08/2014 20:20

nice quality, not night quality

Bearbehind · 12/08/2014 20:21

But they're expensive, so you should return it if you don't think it's worth it

Even if the OP hadn't bought it in an airport (presumably she can't pop back there), do you really think they would accept a return of a used candle, which cannot be resold, just because the OP doesn't like it Hmm

She was sucked into the marketing and won't bother again but she's not entitled to a refund.

lizhow14 · 12/08/2014 20:22

I love Neom candles and they do a rosey smelling one. Smile

Lordofmyflies · 12/08/2014 20:25

I don't rate them either! If you like a strong scent, there is diptique which are pricey, or St Eval which are about £8 but also pretty scented. I've tried most other but always come back to these brands!

CarmineRose1978 · 12/08/2014 20:28

I'd never heard of Jo Malone before reading this thread (don't really use candles), so I did a quick google to see what you're classing as expensive. And there's one on the John Lewis website for £280! £280!!! For a candle! For that price it better be a magic candle with the power to grant wishes... Who has that kind of money to literally burn?!

Icelollycraving · 12/08/2014 20:32

kitten try the diptyque roses candle. It's beautiful but a delicate rose so best in a smaller room. Burn it for the first time so that the top is entirely liquid, trim the wick & you'll get a clean burn.

expatinscotland · 12/08/2014 20:35

All Jo Malone is such a rip off! The perfumes, too. Don't know how they stay in business.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/08/2014 20:40

I've never heard of Neom, I'll have to see if I can have a sniff of one, thank you. Icelolly, thank you too :) I'll have a look at that too, for smaller rooms is good in my house!

I've made my own bath salts but couldn't get enough smell into them to be really nice they also turned out gritty due to the cut price salts I bought it's for my birthday and I haven't got any other ideas at the moment. Read this thread and thought aha! (Sorry op for hijack)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/08/2014 20:43

Think dh will balk at the prices though :( might need to give myself a birthday present.

angeltulips · 12/08/2014 20:43

I was in daylesford organic yesterday (I KNOW) and had a whiff of their dog roses candle - divine!

I find there are so many nice candles these days it's not necessary to buy the super exxy ones - strictly birthday present territory for me.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/08/2014 20:44

Shock Neom have mimosa, that's my most favourite ever smell.
