In being extremely disappointed with my Jo Malone candle!

I've been after one for ages but couldn't justify the price as double what I pay for Yankees. I've recently been in holiday and come across the Jo Malone shop on the airport so treated myself. The bag smelt amazing and i was so pleased I got it home in one piece.
I got home and after a sleep decided to light it only to discover it hardly has any smell to it Shock
I feel so let down and quite stupid in front of my dh after me raving about how good they are and make your home smell amazing.

I don't think I've seen daylesford organic before.

I need these companies to all send me samples and then I will declare a winner!

I like the White Company's candles best, but they're pricy as well. I do find Yankee Candles are generally quite good - the Christmas Rose one is nice.

Carminrose the one I got was £31.50 normally £39.99 but I got it on the airport. The ones you looked at would be massive in comparison x

Here you go:

Bargain! (Or not....)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/08/2014 21:08

:) thank you! In comparison to the big names that is a bargain.

angeltulips · 12/08/2014 21:11

Well, quite. It was a lovely smell so hopefully it tickles your nose in the same way!

I like White Company candles as a cheaper alternative for everyday.

Have to say, I do love Jo Malone and Diptyque. I had a big, 4 wick JM candle, but I managed to make it last a year!

ungelato · 12/08/2014 21:26

Jo Malone perfumes and candles are not actually made by Jo Malone as the company was taken over by Estee Lauder, she now has her own Jo Loves perfume company in London. My friend bought a Jo malone candle recently and so is disappointed with the fragrance she would never buy another one, it's a pity Jo Malone is still using her name for Estee Lauder products.

GogoGobo · 12/08/2014 21:31

I love JM candles but the scent definitely increases after the first hour or so of burning - perhaps it will improve x

Icelollycraving · 12/08/2014 21:39

Lauder bought Jo Malone in 1999 so it's not a recent thing. They also own Mac,Origins,Clinique, bobbi brown,Aveda just to name a few. Most cosmetic companies are owned or affiliated these days with either Lvmh,Lauder or Loreal.
Buy a candle because you love it. Fragrance is so personal.

I've started making my own like Namechangearoonie123 with soy wax and I use pure essential oils which offer a much cleaner and pure scent. I am a busy working mum, not a big earner at all but I manage to make a batch or say 3 or 4 at a time while my 2 year old naps for an hour and half! It costs a couple of quid per candle and are far more scented than any Jo Malone candle I've bought or been given in the past with a fragrance of 6% which is considered high in scented candles. My firneds love them and my house always smells gorgeous! There is no way I'd waste my money on buying scented candles again.

I was bought JL Blackberry and Bay as an engagement present. Was happy. Smelled of nowt. Thank Christ I hadn't paid for it. It is a shocking rip off. Someone also bought me a Ralph Lauren Home candle. I wasn't that keen on the fragrance but by God it was powerful. So if you find one of those you like, definitely recommend.

BringMeTea · 28/08/2014 11:32

JM obvs

atticusclaw · 28/08/2014 11:32

I agree JM candles are a let down. I had one bought for me as a gift and was excited to light it. I could barely smell anything. In stark contrast another friend bought me a monsoon candle that was amazing even when it wasn't lit.

I was also given some pomegranate noir perfume by a friend who couldn't stand it. Not surprising really since it smells of cough mixture.

SweetFelicityArkwright · 28/08/2014 11:53

If you like a strong scent then I recommend the Yankee Candle tarts. Definitely get your money's worth in terms of strength of fragrance.
There is also no messing around with a wick and you can mix them to make different fragrances. I use an electric tart burner which makes them really easy to use and safer than a candle.

squoosh · 28/08/2014 11:58

I hate Yankee Candles, won't have their ugly little jars in my home. Stinky, fat bottomed things.

Love Diptyque but can't justify the ££. TX Maxx is great for picking up nice candles on the cheap.

squirrelweasel · 28/08/2014 12:07

I agree squoosh tkmaxx is brilliant for candles. I bought the snowdon flood kew gardens and regents park candles for £7 each. Not on the high street are selling them for £22 each!

BringMeTea · 28/08/2014 12:15

I have bought Miller Harris at TK Maxx but again very little scent. I wondered if they perhaps got them at the end of their shelf life? Have also had Diptyque and they are very nice but the Ralph Lauren one was markedly more potent. Was from an American friend so may not be available in UK.

greeneggsandjam · 28/08/2014 12:19

I bought a St Ewal candle and was really disappointed (no smell at all) so I sent it back, they said they would test it out and get back to me but they never did. They sent me another one as a replacement, it was a different scent but still had no smell.

I have a l'occitane candle which makes the room smell nice. I'm not sure how much they cost though. Very annoying when you buy a scented candle and it has no scent at all.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 28/08/2014 13:14

I really rate lily flame candles and they have some fabulous scents.
