Untaxed cars

There is a car by my garage that has not moved for 5 weeks. The tax disc expired last night. I checked on the DVLA website and it said also no MOT since end of June.
AIBU to report it today?

Go report! I hate people who do this, assuming it's not private property.

phantomnamechanger · 01/08/2014 17:54

do you know who owns it?
maybe it's been abandoned/stolen?
maybe it belongs to someone who has been taken ill and is unable to sort their paperwork out?
when you say it's by your garage, is that on a public highway?

Pipbin · 01/08/2014 17:59

There is no harm in reporting it, assuming it's on the road.

SisterMcKenzie · 01/08/2014 18:07

The tax disc expired last night.

Are you Victor Meldrew, a member of the Stasi or do you have NOO life...

chortles

mollypup · 01/08/2014 18:10

last night? bloody hell.

did you watch it until the clock struck midnight and then think 'i know what i'll do'.

Hmm
gamerchick · 01/08/2014 18:12

Seriously man have you been counting down the weeks to the golden time to report?

CatKisser · 01/08/2014 18:14

I thought to check the MOT status of a car on the DVLA you needed the number off the logbook?

ShatnersBassoon · 01/08/2014 18:14

Yeah, report it if it's upsetting you.

LightastheBreeze · 01/08/2014 18:16

If you get your tax online or by phone you are allowed to display old tax disc for 2 weeks

GratefulHead · 01/08/2014 18:17

Yep report it, it might have been stolen if it's sat there that length of time and not moved.

Gruntled · 01/08/2014 18:18

I can't get in my garage. It's blocking my way by about a foot. Every flipping day I come home waiting to see some one cleaning or mending it. Five weeks it's been there on the road.

DiaDuit · 01/08/2014 18:19

you want to report it for being one day out of tax? seriously?

is the land it is on private property? if so then they may have sorned it. not moving in 5 weeks (how do you know BTW? do you watch it all day and night?) would correlate with the MOT expiring so would suggest it has been moved to private property to avoid being done for being on road with no MOT.

ShatnersBassoon · 01/08/2014 18:20

You missed the key piece of information out of your op! Why haven't you reported it before now if it's been abandoned and is blocking your access?

LightastheBreeze · 01/08/2014 18:20

i would report it as it sounds like it has been abandoned and is clearly causing a bit of an obstruction, regardless of its tax and MOT status.

TidyDancer · 01/08/2014 18:20

Last night?! Bloody hell. Give them chance! The dvla website is on a delay, it could be taxed and not showing. And how did you check the mot? You can't do it without details only the owner would know.

Floralnomad · 01/08/2014 18:20

If it was blocking the garage I would have called 101 weeks ago to report it as dumped , you are very patient .

phantomnamechanger · 01/08/2014 18:20

obstructing your garage is a different matter entirely OP, why did you not say that in the first place!

TidyDancer · 01/08/2014 18:22

Ah. Drip feed. That's different. But if it's a garaged area it may not be public land. Is it housing association/council or private? It will make a difference who deals with it.

DiaDuit · 01/08/2014 18:22

xpost. so it is on the road and causing and obstruction. I'd call 101.

Redglitter · 01/08/2014 18:23

Is the car on a public road though or private land? If it's on private land obstruction or not the police may not be able to help.

LightastheBreeze · 01/08/2014 18:24

I probably wouldn't mention the MOT status as I'm not sure you are meant to use the online databases for general nosiness. Don't they ask if you own the car.

phantomnamechanger · 01/08/2014 18:27

OP, please come back and clarify HOW you found out the car was not MOTd?
You need to supply more info than just the reg to obtain this!

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 01/08/2014 18:31

DON'T PANIC!!! The DVLA will get in touch with the owner shortly.

We have a van that is only used for sporting purposes for DS. Due to DS having had an operation and not able to partake in his sport for some considerable time, we innocently didn't renew van's insurance (although tax disc was still valid). It is parked on our driveway, on a private road, and wasn't being used.

We got a rather threatening letter from the DVLA telling us we had to "SORN" it (Statutory Off-Road Notice", I think it stands for) because the insurance had lapsed. I didn't think the insurance mattered too much as we weren't using the van, and it still had the tax disc, even though it isn't parked on a public road.

Do you know who the owner is, Gruntled, ie, is he/she a neighbour, or do you genuinely think it is an abandoned vehicle? If the latter, then report it, if the former, then it does sound a bit Victor Meldrew-ish. Smile

londonrach · 01/08/2014 18:32

Tax issue is different from blocking garage. If blocking garage phone 101. Tax us mo online and you don't get new tax discs. If parked on road not blocking garage no problem and nothing you can do.

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 01/08/2014 18:34

Sorry - I missed the bit where you said you can't get into your garage. I'd have got a load of people to "bump-lift" it out of the way. Maybe it has been abandoned, then.
