Untaxed cars

Gruntled · 01/08/2014 17:47

There is a car by my garage that has not moved for 5 weeks. The tax disc expired last night. I checked on the DVLA website and it said also no MOT since end of June.
AIBU to report it today?

Tax is online....silly ipad.

Redglitter · 01/08/2014 18:38

actually you can check MOT status of a car online with just the reg number and veh make. The OP is quite within her right to check

CatKisser · 01/08/2014 18:38

Aren't tax disks still being sent out? I had to renew mine yesterday and it said a new one would be sent out ASAP.

CatKisser · 01/08/2014 18:39

Can you show me where, RedGlitter? I tried to do this having just had shit time getting my car through MOT but it wasn't possible to do this without either test cert number or logbook number.

Redglitter · 01/08/2014 18:39

The are at the moment I think it's Oct it stops but at the moment they're still being issued

Redglitter · 01/08/2014 18:40

www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk

CatKisser · 01/08/2014 18:41

Thank you! Although it's showing my car as "untaxed" which is inaccurate as I bought a new one yesterday.

Redglitter · 01/08/2014 18:42

Probably just not updated. I bought mine on Wed and it's showing as taxed Smile

CatKisser · 01/08/2014 18:42

Oh it says it needs time to update. Blush

Gruntled · 01/08/2014 18:48

The car is on the public road, half on the kerb and half off. And yes, I have been waiting til the tax expired. You can check the status of any vehicle if you have the make and reg number. Google search and the page comes up. It does seem to be abandoned. I was going to put a note on the windscreen about it being in the way. No one knows who it belongs to.

You don't get 2 weeks if you buy it online you get 5 days. But still, they could have taxed it yesterday and be waiting for it to arrive. Personally, I'd stick a note on saying 'please move this or I will report it as being untaxed' and give them a couple of days to get it.

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 01/08/2014 19:04

Fair enough, Gruntled - but you didn't make that clear from the start.

Report it now, then.

FishWithABicycle · 01/08/2014 19:06

If it's blocking your drive there was no need to wait so long - report it! even if it's legally taxed it's not reasonable to block someone's garage.

The "5 days grace" if you order your tax online is a bit rubbish - you only get 5 days so long as you don't drive your car or keep it on a public road during that time, so even if the owner has sent off for the tax if they are keeping the car on a public road it's still illegal. being pernicketty about the tax after 1 day is a bit silly but putting up with a blocked garage for weeks is more than can reasonably be expected.

gamerchick · 01/08/2014 19:09

I agree, if it's blocking you off then you really didn't have to wait so long to report it.

I'm not sure how to report it though, I know when somebody in the street was plaguing the neighbours they just rang the council and they come and covered all the cars he had lined up in the street with tape and a notice they'll be removed by x date.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 01/08/2014 19:17

Not true fish. You can drive it as normal as long as you order a new disc before the old one expires.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 01/08/2014 19:18

I was wrong and pp was right it's 14 days www.gov.uk/government/news/new-rules-when-renewing-your-tax-disc

LightastheBreeze · 01/08/2014 19:22

'I have not received the tax disc. Can I use the vehicle without the tax disc displayed?
When you apply for a tax disc online or by using DVLA's phone service you are able to legally continue to drive your vehicle for up to 14 days after the tax disc has expired while you wait for the new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply when you have applied for a new tax disc before the current one expires. You should continue to display the expired disc on your vehicle, until the new one arrives.'

Taken from the yougov website - its 14 days now

LightastheBreeze · 01/08/2014 19:22

x post

phantomnamechanger · 01/08/2014 19:26

I still can't find any way of a random person finding out about a random cars MOT status, with only the reg and make, only it's tax status as in redglitters link

the government MOT search I found requires either registration document or previous MOT cert.

phantomnamechanger · 01/08/2014 19:29

apologies, I now see that MOT info comes up too when you do the tax search

oneandnotlonelyk · 01/08/2014 20:32

Yanbu, report it!

FishWithABicycle · 01/08/2014 22:14

ah yes the thing I said was what happens if you order it the day after the old one expires (yes this happened to me)
