Ok, so whenever I feed the cats (95% of the time) I rinse cat spoon under the tap straight after. When DH feeds the cats he leaves the dirty spoon in empty can all day and would use this spoon again for the next meal.

This morning he feeds cats and sure enough I've just got back home and the dirty spoon is in can, by now all dried on and caked with cat food.

So I have put spoon in water in washing up bowl to soak (no other utensils in bowl) and DH has gone potty because I am using a bowl for 'humans use items' for a cat spoon. I've tried to explain that if the spoon is rinsed straight after using it would not be an issue. I personally don't see the problem here .

However, I am prepared to accept that I am being unreasonable to soak a cat spoon caked in cat food using a washing up bowl for humans use if the majority of MNers agree with DH .

As you can see it is an extremely trivial AIBU (probably the most trivial of this year, if not decade).

I'm more on your side. My mum just used any spoon, knife or fork then wash it then put it back in the cutlery drawer. Cat food is just food and a clean spoon is a clean spoon.

I use the human washing up bowl for the cats dishes and spoons, but always once the human stuff has been washed. Once it has been used for cat stuff it becomes 'cat water' and cannot touch human stuff. I realise as I am writing this that it sounds illogical as we don't really clean the bowl out that thoroughly for next time.

But not, YANBU. He should just rinse the spoon (being careful not to infect the kitchen with Cat Water). Could you compromise and soak spoon in the cat tin?

Here all cat bowls go in dishwasher, as does cat food spoon.

I think the dishwasher goes to about ten trillion degrees so it should be no problem.

My cat bowls go in the dishwasher, I work on the basis that as toddler DD eats the dry food directly out of them and has come to no harm, 'cat bowl germs' are unlikely to hurt us.

Your DH is BU by leaving the manky spoon out to deal with. Tell him if he had cleaned it in the first place then this wouldn't be an issue. (I do realise that this is likely to start a fight, it would in my household).

You're both unreasonable. The spoon is ok in the tin till the next feed and it's fine to leave it in the washing up bowl too.

Things that go in the 'human use' bowl presumably includes knifes used to cut raw chicken/fish/pork?

He should rinse immediately. You shouldn't put cat items in with human items

Should have a dedicated cat food spoon too, one you know is the cat food spoon even though it looks just like the others, so you can avoid accidentally using it.

By law pet food is for for human consumption anyway so it won't harm you.

Never mind the cleanliness of the spoon - doesn't he put a lid or cover on the tin with the remaining cat food in it?

When we had a cat I always kept cat spoons, forks separate. Never put in dishwasher with other things. Never dried on ordinary teatowel. Sounds a bit obsessive and probably not logical. But your DH should really wash the spoon. And always washed them under the tap not in washing up bowl.

I have four dedicated cat spoons; blue, pink, green and orange. They cannot be mistaken for human spoons . They live on the cat food shelf with the biscuits and tins.

DH will put the used spoon in an empty can! That's how it gets dried on cat food all over it and yes, if only he rinsed it under the tap after use, it could then be left on the cat shelf to dry naturally.

I would not consider putting cat spoon in dishwasher; DH may implode . I may share some of these replies with him later so he might be grateful that I don't use dishwasher/human spoons lol.

YABU. Your DH is 100% right (except he should rinse the spoon, whatever it's for).

OP - I stand by it....cat food and even cat tongues are more appealing than raw chicken and fish residue
