Extremely trivial AIBU

Ok, so whenever I feed the cats (95% of the time) I rinse cat spoon under the tap straight after. When DH feeds the cats he leaves the dirty spoon in empty can all day and would use this spoon again for the next meal.

This morning he feeds cats and sure enough I've just got back home and the dirty spoon is in can, by now all dried on and caked with cat food.

So I have put spoon in water in washing up bowl to soak (no other utensils in bowl) and DH has gone potty because I am using a bowl for 'humans use items' for a cat spoon. I've tried to explain that if the spoon is rinsed straight after using it would not be an issue. I personally don't see the problem here Confused.

However, I am prepared to accept that I am being unreasonable to soak a cat spoon caked in cat food using a washing up bowl for humans use if the majority of MNers agree with DH Grin.

As you can see it is an extremely trivial AIBU (probably the most trivial of this year, if not decade).

I mash banana on with dog kibble to fill a kong, and because it's banana I subconsciously lick the fork before putting it in the sink/dishwasher. It tastes of dog food and I feel a bit Bleurgh for all of 30 seconds. What's worse is this is almost a weekly occurrence. I'm still alive.

deakymom · 29/07/2014 22:27

i used to wash up the cat spork in the same water after i had washed up the "human" bowls etc i used a separate scrubber though really its just processed meat bit like corned beef but with ash in it!

Tabby1963 · 29/07/2014 22:40

Dizzy oooh the masher Shock contemplates this horror for a few moments.

Lampy what's a kong? Confused

Deaky spork = sophisticated cat owner Grin.

does the cat ever lick your hands? you than wash them with soap right, not even with that hot water otherwise you would wash the skin off too... nobody thinks anymore about it once hands are washed... they are clean. why is it different witha spoon?

trevortrevorslattery · 30/07/2014 10:04

I guess we also aren't supposed to let the dogs lick the gravy / sauce / leftovers off the dinner plates then? (They go in the dishwasher afterwards too, mind)

Phew fraidycat at least I am not alone!

NewtRipley · 30/07/2014 10:33

I used to wash babies' bottles in the dishwasher, on the basis that the temperature is high enough to kill bacteria and viruses.

ftmsoon · 30/07/2014 10:49

I have previously put the rat bowls in the dishwasher with human stuff, they have been in the cage! Not sure I will now we have pfb DD though.

Teddybeau1988 · 30/07/2014 11:19

I've always put the dog bowls and spoons in the dishwasher with our stuff.

I use a high quality, grain free dog food, does that make it acceptable?

MsAnthropic · 30/07/2014 12:21

YANBU on either count. He should definitely rinse it straight away and he's being silly about the "human washing up bowl" if he's happy to let a cat live in the house. It's just cat food.

I do wash the cat's food bowls separately (but would put them in the dishwasher if I had one), although I use any utensils for dishing food up and let him lick a liquid supplement I give him off any spoon.

jacks365 · 30/07/2014 12:45

Just to throw a spanner in the works but recently checked my dishwasher temperature and the hottest wash is 65%. I know some are hotter but worth double checking.

Sapat · 30/07/2014 13:14

Don't have pets, but if you wash it is then clean? I mean, you use hot water and detergent? And the dishwasher sterilises things.

MistressMia · 30/07/2014 13:16

Cat plates and cutlery get soaked and washed in a separate 'cat stuff only' washing up bowl. Dirty water then gets poured down the outside drain, not the sink. Sink gets cleaned afterwards.

In last house had twin sinks, one exclusively for cat use only.

Never in a million years will they go in dishwasher unless there is a separate dishwasher .

No logic to any of above.

Lauren83 · 30/07/2014 13:19

I think both using a dirty spoon and washing it in 'human' water are both fine, I have 4 cats and have done both those things

Precious

I also use any old bowl for the cat sometimes - I have a stack of white bowls that came with posh pies

Migsy1 · 30/07/2014 15:35

Cat food is manufactured to be safe for human consumption. In fact, humans do taste tests on it.

UANBU - Crusty cat food is horrid. Being veggie, I hate wet cat food and it makes me want to vomit so mine have survived into old age on a diet of dried food.

NewtRipley · 30/07/2014 15:41

dried food is good for their teeth
