I know there is another thread about the ceremony, but this is specifically about the "just send us your fucking money!!" Geldof-esque begging.

I have no issue with UNICEF, or with fundraising, or with using the Games as a platform to promote that. What I do have an issue with is Comic Relief type videos, "text MYPARENTSPAYMYCONTRACT to 0898", James McAvoy (sp?) sending his text live on stage followed by close ups of the audience doing the same.

Its not a fundraiser! Surely they could put the number up in the corner of the screen, mention that the Games supports the cause and leave it at that?

AIBU?

MrsGeorgeMichael · 23/07/2014 23:07

yabu. i thought it was a great way of raising monies

WaffleWiffle · 23/07/2014 23:08

There is a time and place for charity, the commonwealth games isn't it

Rangirl · 23/07/2014 23:09

YABU
I think it's great and summarises one of the great Glasgow qualities of putting others first Smile

jeanmiguelfangio · 23/07/2014 23:09

YANBU, like another poster says, its the being rammed down your throat that does it

HoneyTits · 23/07/2014 23:11

YANBU!

Rangirl · 23/07/2014 23:11

Mind you I am probably biased by James MacAvoy asking Would probably do quite a few things if he asked nicelyGrin

TamzinGrey · 23/07/2014 23:11

Yanbu. Found it so irritating that we switched channels.

NormHonal · 23/07/2014 23:11

ODFOD. (Ooh, I've never used that before!) Grin

YABU.

Why the hell not? 1 billion people watching worldwide. Many can easily afford a five. Many can't. Why not try an appeal and see what happens?!

NormHonal · 23/07/2014 23:12

Oh and I'm with Ramgirl on the McAvoy thing.

Bogeyface · 23/07/2014 23:12

I am not saying it shouldnt be supported or mentioned, but the constant videos and "please please donate" smacks too much of CiN or CR type telethons.

Primarily this is about sport uniting nations. A short speech (and ok, 1 film) about how and why Glasgow wants to support Unicef with fundraising during the games, followed by the donation number on screen should be enough.

Bogeyface · 23/07/2014 23:14

flipchart · 23/07/2014 23:16

It doesn't bother me in the slightest.
Some of the commonwealth countries are the poorest in the world.

Why not take a briillant opportunity to help?

Veins · 23/07/2014 23:17

I agree NormHonai. I donated, if you don't like it don't donate.

fifi669 · 23/07/2014 23:19

YABU. They've got my fiver.

NormHonal · 23/07/2014 23:20

It's never been done in this context before. It's an experiment. Only good can come of it - money to help children who need help. So, I say again, why the hell not?

And if you don't like it, don't donate.

Bogeyface · 23/07/2014 23:23

The minute silence was moving and incredibly touching, it made me tear up (apart from the prat athlete filming it....there's always one).

But I still am not convinced that AIBU about the fundraising.

It's pissing me off too. Its inappropriate. Wrong time, wrong place. The whole thing is gently political though.

thereturnofshoesy · 23/07/2014 23:26

imo the best thing is not to watch it at all

diaimchlo · 23/07/2014 23:26

YABU.

They have not rammed it down our throats at all, 5 short film clips and a couple of short speeches during a 31/2 hour ceremony is not over the top.

LastTango · 23/07/2014 23:27

We got fed up and turned over. That was not what I tuned in to see!

Bearbehind · 23/07/2014 23:28

Totally agree bogeyface

It's the unexpected link that seems so weird to me.

If it was the 'Commonwealth Games in association with UNICEF' then it would have been expected but it hasn't been advertised that way has it?

Tinkerball · 23/07/2014 23:29

YABU. So much negativity.
