I know there is another thread about the ceremony, but this is specifically about the "just send us your fucking money!!" Geldof-esque begging.

I have no issue with UNICEF, or with fundraising, or with using the Games as a platform to promote that. What I do have an issue with is Comic Relief type videos, "text MYPARENTSPAYMYCONTRACT to 0898", James McAvoy (sp?) sending his text live on stage followed by close ups of the audience doing the same.

Its not a fundraiser! Surely they could put the number up in the corner of the screen, mention that the Games supports the cause and leave it at that?

Yabu. For me the commonwealth games brings a bunch of the richest and poorest countries in the world together to have a friendly sports competition, some of these countries have horrendous poverty. One of the things we've been celebrating in Scotland with the baton relay is volunteering in sports coaching etc to make our children and communities healthier & fitter. What better platform to remind us that not everyone has the same opportunities & that we should help others?

Bearbehind · 23/07/2014 23:30

I know it seems to have gone on forever diaimchio but it's only been on for 2.5 hours not 3.5!

thereturnofshoesy · 23/07/2014 23:32

i assume all the people saying the op was bu
gave money

MrsAmaretto · 23/07/2014 23:38

Yes, I did donate.

NormHonal · 23/07/2014 23:39

Yes, I also donated.

Bogeyface · 23/07/2014 23:41

I was assuming that all of the people were scottish, at least 2 are!

As I said, not against using it as a platform for fundraisng for Unicef, but I just dont feel that the opening ceremony should have been hijacked in that way.

The coverage started at 8:00pm. the ceremony started at 9:00pm hence the 3.5 hour comment.

arethereanyleftatall · 23/07/2014 23:50

Well, they got a fiver off me, so it worked.
It was the '18,000 children die needlessly every day' comment that did it for me. That's 18,000 too many.

Veins · 23/07/2014 23:50

Yes I did

TheDayOfMyDoctor · 23/07/2014 23:53

I thought it was a great think to do. Looking forward to hearing how much they've raised.

sarahbanshee · 24/07/2014 00:07

Be thankful that you can turn off, turn over, look away. You are free to decide. 18,000 children aren't. If you can spare a fiver, and you want to, then you can give it. That is all they're saying.

BoyFromTheBigBadCity · 24/07/2014 00:31

Was it not Ewan McGregor?

Bogeyface · 24/07/2014 00:39

He did it too but earlier on. It was JMc and (I think) Chris Hoy that did the "I just sent my text" thing.

We gave a £5 here. And I never donate to anything, bloody hate telethons. But a few relevant clips about the poverty around the Commonwealth and the lovely James McAvoy was absolutely fine.

Loch Lomond got DH crying, and he's from Edinburgh!

JennyPiccolo · 24/07/2014 01:04

UNICEF have tweeted that they've raised over 2.5 million just in the uk tonight.

Mrsjayy · 24/07/2014 01:16
