To think that the majority of people don't realise stuff can be bought cheaper?

Who is buying new retail stuff

At a car boot sale yesterday everything was 50p-£2, DVDs, furniture, dresses that would cost £50, shoes that would cost £60,chests of drawers that would cost £40, books - almost new 10pence

Everything I buy from EBay is half/third of what it would cost new

I got a barbecue for free on freecycle, I'm just about to give away a leather sofa for free that would have cost £600. (It's as new and was in the house when we moved in)

Who is buying new ?

Me, probably. I do ebay but would rather pay money not to go to a car boot sale.

I mean I'm not sure your hypothesis is right - that the majority of people don't realise you can buy stuff cheaper

I am - because I want to - not sure why this is wrong.

I also donate to charity and am a member of my local free pages - I also recently gave 2 sofas away - do i win the internet?

and yes car boot sales are my ideal of hell on earth

I'm only saying that folk cant realise because of the vast majority of stuff bought new on Amazon/retail etc

In sure most, if not all people are aware that hung scan e bought cheaply second hand.

This may surprise you, but some people actually prefer to but new. Fancy that!

If you buy second hand you don't have as much choice, whereas if you bought a new sofa for example you could choose the style, size, colour, finish, delivery. It depends what your priorities are I guess and how picky you are.

I buy some things new but until yesterday I had no idea that loads of things id paid good money for could be bought much cheaper at a car boot

There was literally as much books as Tesco on their 2 for. £7 thing except every book was 10pencd

of course people realise - they just don't want to trawl through peoples second hand tat to find a bargain

also I want DVDs when the film comes out - not 3 years later for 50p in a bargain bin

I don't tend to ask for things on free pages because I think people who can't afford to buy new should get first dibs

Of course people realise they can get stuff cheaper used / second hand but some of us don't want used / secondhand we want new so we pay the premium for it .

I was just thinking that as I went past DFS this morning. There is so much free or cheap second hand stuff around I don't understand why you would buy new. It only looks new for a bit and then it just looks like old furniture.

Clothes also. So much nice designer stuff on ebay for a fraction of the price.

But if nobody bought things new you and I would have nothing second hand to buy!

I love getting a bargain, total ebay addict. I was gutted when I realised the pound shop sold kallo rice cakes, I'd been paying 70p extra per pack and we use a lot. It's part of the reason I love ocado actually, they have amazing deals a lot of the time. Like when I got Gü puddings last month for half price .

But I do buy a mixture of new and second hand. Sometimes you can actually get new stuff for cheaper. I have seen many people ripped off buying something second hand on eBay that was cheaper new on amazon.

For choice, fit, convenience.

I realise I can get thigs cheaper but on the balance things I'm more time poor so would rather the convenience of knowing I can get something

I tend to buy new (not full price). Car boots are fine if you're after a missmatch, not if you're looking for something though as it's looking for a needle in a haystack. I also don't want to search through people's unwanted stuff.

I buy new.

And from eBay as well.

I couldn't be bothered going to car boot sales in the hope I found a bargain.

No way on sofa, I was put off when my sister bought a fabric one and her house got infested with fleas.

I wouldn't on electricals. There is no warranty, would rather buy a cheap new washing machine than a second hand one as I don't know how long it will last.

I have sold stuff at car boot sales, so I'm well aware, but can't be arsed to shop at them and am lucky enough that I can comfortably afford to buy new stuff.

It's time too. There was a car boot sale on here this morning, but I was called into work and earnt over £200. So by working and buying new I probably still end up better off.
Some of us are terribly time poor.

I like to buy new. I know car boots are cheaper but I prefer books that haven't been read on the loo, DVDs that are shiny and scratch free, clothes that haven't been in contact with anyone else's sweat and shoes that aren't full of someone else sweaty foot bacteria.

But at the same time, I love second hand furniture and the majority of our furniture is used. My brain knows no logic.

What an odd thing to think, of course most people realise they could get something cheaper second hand but sometimes people want new.

Some things I prefer new to second hand. I like new clothes because then you get those first few wears where I feel like I'm looking incredible before the clothes have been washed and started to inevitably fade/ go bobbly/ lose their shape etc. I do buy second hand clothes too but they rarely look new. Rarely buy second hand shoes as I prefer new ones which will mould to the shape of my foot and not someone else's. I often buy new electrical items as they come under guarantee, I am always worried with second hand they might break very soon after me buying them so don't buy second hand if I want years of use from something. I always buy new items if I am going to gift them, for example I never buy myself new books and always get second hand, but I'd buy new for somebody else.

Also not everything is available second hand. If I fall in love with something brand new in the shop I'd probably have to wait weeks or months before it started regularly appearing second hand on ebay. I might never come across one in a charity shop/ car boot sale. Sometimes I will wait for whatever it is I want to become readily available second hand but other times I don't want to wait.

If people can afford new and they want new then that's okay and obviously people do because most shops sell new, and not used, items. Plus if everybody stopped buying new we would quickly run out of second-hand items.You need people who are upgrading their older items by buying new to stock places which sell second-hand.
