Who is buying new retail stuff Confused

At a car boot sale yesterday everything was 50p-£2, DVDs, furniture, dresses that would cost £50, shoes that would cost £60,chests of drawers that would cost £40, books - almost new 10pence

Everything I buy from EBay is half/third of what it would cost new

I got a barbecue for free on freecycle, I'm just about to give away a leather sofa for free that would have cost £600. (It's as new and was in the house when we moved in)

Who is buying new ?

I buy lots second hand and its why I have had 4 holidays in last year even though have a 30k income. I have so much nice stuff all dirt cheap so I have lots of money left to live it up.

Thenapoleonofcrime · 13/07/2014 15:21

I wouldn't on electricals. There is no warranty, would rather buy a cheap new washing machine than a second hand one as I don't know how long it will last

In general, I would completely agree, I just wanted to point out though that the British Heart Foundation have second-hand furniture and electrical shops, the goods have been tested and we've had two dishwashers from them including my Bosch (which I love with all my heart) for a fraction of the cost. If you are stuck for cash for new electricals, I'd rather do that than pay for new somewhere like BrightHouse which is what a lot of people with little money do.

bubblybox · 13/07/2014 15:24

I was looking at my clothes, all new, and nearly all my favourites have come from ebay.

I'd rather not spend hours trawling through piles of chipped china cats in order to score a 2nd-hand £10 dress, though...the time, effort and usually poorer quality isn't worth the money saving for me.

DumDumDeeDay · 13/07/2014 15:28

I buy new wouldn't dream of shopping for second hand clothes or furniture. I just don't like it. I'm sure loads of people love a bargin but to me a bargin in something on sale not 2nd hand.

Nancy66 · 13/07/2014 15:28

I think people know about these things but choose not to use them.

I can't be bothered with Ebay and I'd rather poke my eye out than go to a car boot sale.

If I buy new from a shop I can try it on, I can return it, I know it's never been worn and I don't have to mix with the oddballs at car boot sales

melissa83 · 13/07/2014 15:33

I dont really go to car boots but love facebook buy and sell and ebay. A lot of people buy stuff and then sell it quick either as they are well off with no concept of money or poor and need money fast.

ICanSeeTheSun · 13/07/2014 15:33

I didn't know that.

melissa83 · 13/07/2014 15:34

Its a good money maker to I bought a radley bag for £5 and sold it for £65. Its just easy money but rich people just want rid for space.

marne2 · 13/07/2014 15:38

I buy from boot sales and ebay, I only really buy stuff from shops if there's a sale on. It does make me angry when family members tell me about their new tv which they bought from the local electrical shop for twice as much as you would pay if you shopped around. My DM needs a new phone so she will go to the Orange shop and buy whatever they recommend rather than looking for a good deal online.

I think it's a case of having the time to do it, a lot of people just go out and buy things when they need them without really shopping around for the best price, some people have too much money and not enough sense too Grin.

marne2 · 13/07/2014 15:41

We bought a 3 piece suit a few weeks ago for £150, we are pleased with it, no was would we have payed £2000 to buy it new, all our furniture is 2nd hand, mainly from auctions of gum tree.

ArtVandelay · 13/07/2014 15:45

I buy second hand lamps, furniture and vases because i love 60's and 70's. I trawl house clearance and flea markets because i can get stuff for much cheaper than it would cost on ebay and etsy. I recently bought a lamp that sells for over a 1000 second hand (ebay or antique shop) for 100 and it still has the original shop tags on from the 60's! Day to day stuff is not so interesting for me, mainly because collecting is an ongoing process that takes time and if i need a washing machine or a pair of shoes then i generally need it now, this minute. I do keep our things nice though and then sell them on or donate them when I'm done with them.

maggiethemagpie · 13/07/2014 15:46

I do buy new but very rarely pay the full price. The likes of Debenhams and m and s now, I consider the ticket price to be an inflation of the real price. They are always having 20% off sales now, so the real price is at least 20% off the ticket price.
If I see something I really like I may buy it at full price but then buy it again if it gets reduced and take the new item back on the old receipt (to get full price refund) but I mainly wait for the sales.
And in my mind it's not really on sale unless its 50% off the ticket price.

I do also buy from ebay - more new than 2ndhand but you can still get some massive bargains. EG recently bought a couple of expensive bras, brand new, shop price £30 ebay price £15

PseudoBadger · 13/07/2014 15:54

This thread reminds me of my MIL. She stands over me as I unpack supermarkets shopping saying "well you could've got that cheaper in Savers". Well I don't have time to shop in several shops, nor to trail the car boot sales etc. I find very rude to imply that someone is getting 'ripped off'.

Namechangearoonie123 · 13/07/2014 16:00

Y y to bras

Someone recommended the Alana bra to me from bravissimo - standard 22 quid price I think

First place I checked was EBay - 9.99 delivered

EBay is always the first place I check for anything

I'd always worry about fakes with eBay and brand names. I think that's one thing I wouldn't use ebay for.

thecageisfull · 13/07/2014 16:06

Everyone knows this. People are prepared to pay extra for convenience and to get what they want in new condition. Lots of people are cash rich and time poor.

alpinelight · 13/07/2014 16:06

I don't like buying secondhand, especially things that you can't wash properly or anything electrical which would be out of warranty. To be honest, in the area where we live there aren't many second hand shops anyway. I tend to buy new things, but on sale or through outlet stores, often the prices for brand new items can be just as cheap as second hand if you shop around. I buy a lot on ebay but usually new from companies rather than individuals as they are better at dealing with disputes/lost parcels.

Freecycle I don't bother with as it gets really busy in my area and things are usually gone within a few hours of listing. I don't have a car either which makes it harder to collect at their convenience.

MrsWinnibago · 13/07/2014 16:08

I buy nothing but charity shop clothes for myself and I get brand new unworn things all the time. Granted I live in quite a "rich" area but it's amazing how many designer and good high street things I can pick up...unworn, tags on for under five pounds.

Today I got myself a pair of summer jeans for 2 pounds and they're brand new from Wallis. The shop had a sale on...all items 2 pounds...I also got a dress from Next and another from TopShop....they didn't have tags on but seem unworn...still crisp.

defineme · 13/07/2014 16:16

I know this isn't the point but if any of the bargain hunters can find me a tri suit age 11-12 for under £40 I'd be very grateful. I have checked ebay etc. Ds is desperate as he feels it's the key to improving his times!

Nancy66 · 13/07/2014 16:21

an awful lot of the stuff one Ebay is fake though - or seconds

Namechangearoonie123 · 13/07/2014 16:21

What's a tri suit?

I'm well aware I could save a fortune by buying second hand, but DH and I both work long hours, so the last thing we want to do at weekends is shop. When we need things, we order online at John Lewis and collect it on our way home the next day.

MrsWinnibago · 13/07/2014 16:39

Define here

Drquin · 13/07/2014 16:42

With another sweeping generalisation, I counter that most people DO real realise you can buy (some) stuff cheaper .....
But, it depends on whether you value more than just the purchase price.

And, for all the second-hand items, car boot sales and Freecycle bargains out there .... Someone has to have bought the item new in order for it to become "second-hand" :-)

SpottyTits · 13/07/2014 16:43

Define how's this? postage makes it 43.75.
