Scotland for a weekend - 2 days travelling. WWYD/AIBU

Boyfriend of 7 months has an annual BBQ at his mum's place in scotland for all his mates in august. He will go up for a week. He wants me and 22 month DD to go, however due to work, I could only go for 2 nights. I am not sure I can be arsed to go all the way from london to scotland for 2 nights - means 2 whole days of travelling for 1 day there. Plus the BBQ is for his mates and none of them have kids. I think it will be pretty boozy - DD will be fine, but not exactly totally child friendly. I obviously haven't met any of them

Should I make the effort to go? I was single for 5 years before this and am very independent and set in my ways. Sometimes I have to check that I am not being too independent and I am letting him in enough! He is very easygoing and always very happy to fit in with my life and doesn't make many demands or requests of me. Am I being churlish not going?

Typing it out, I feel like I am BU - so would welcome your thoughts. thanks!

August in Scotland is unearthly beautiful. Your daughter will have a lovely time. Go!

No I wouldn't go for such a short time. We recently went on vacation for a week, and had a full day driving to get there and back (1000 miles each way). I found that exhausting, no way would I go somewhere that far for a day.

Where is it? Scotland is a big place, you know. Glasgow or Edinburgh, yes I'd definitely go. Ullapool, maybe not...

Scotland is a country, you know, so it would help if you were more specific. You might be unreasonable if the BBQ is I'm Barra, but not if it's in Edinburgh.

I'd go if it was by (cheap advance) train. Much prefer long train journeys to long car journeys. And I love Scotland so would always put myself out more for going there than other places iyswim.

You should certainly go if you can. Scotland is stunning, especially the west coast. And the islands. We had our honeymoon there.

Give me the Hebrides over the Maldives any time.

I took my kiddos on the overnight train and they were bursting with excitement. So cute. Packed their teddy bears, blankets, PJs, etc. It's a great experience.

Just fly! I flown up to Scotland for a few days with my DS its not an issue.

I can get to Edinburgh in around 4 hours, however it depends on where you live and where the bbq will be. I tend to leave either very early or very late when the only time limiting factor is avoiding getting a speeding ticket .

Well, whereabouts? Thurso or Dundee, for example, probably not as they're quite far away. Glasgow/Edinburgh, for example, the train doesn't take that long.

I used to drive south coast England to Aberdeen in 12 hours including breaks, not too bad at all.

I think it would be a good idea to go - it gives you a chance to meet his mates, since you haven't met them yet.

I suspect this is one of those 'not letting him in' things you mentioned.

Flights or trains make it pretty easy to get to cities, so unless it is very remote, the travel shouldn't be too awful.

I would fly. As your dd is under 2, you will not need to pay much (if anything) for her.

It hugely depends where in Scotland. If you can fly to a city then that would be the best option. It's not too expensive either. I wouldn't drive it for that length of time.

Numanoid Dundee is only 1 hour further north than Edinburgh, so perfectly doable if Edinburgh is.

Thanks AMumInScotland - you are probably right!
And yes point taken re scotland being a big place. It is edinburgh so easy to get to.
I am being a curmudgeon.
Ok, I will go.
Sleeper would be ace, but not on my own with 22 month old DD. I'd prefer to do it when she is older.
I'll look into it.

Janethegirl Oops geography fail, I'm just thinking of it being quite far for me. Well, it would be a long drive and an expensive train journey (well, last time I checked going somewhere near there). Then again, I wouldn't recommend visiting Dundee, I suppose!

Edinburgh is nice, flying would probably be quickest but the train journey is pleasant too.

Numanoid I've flown and driven to Edinburgh many times, however I find driving possibly quicker and certainly more convenient. I need to hire a car if I fly though.
Haven't been in the centre of Dundee for many a year though.
