Boyfriend of 7 months has an annual BBQ at his mum's place in scotland for all his mates in august. He will go up for a week. He wants me and 22 month DD to go, however due to work, I could only go for 2 nights. I am not sure I can be arsed to go all the way from london to scotland for 2 nights - means 2 whole days of travelling for 1 day there. Plus the BBQ is for his mates and none of them have kids. I think it will be pretty boozy - DD will be fine, but not exactly totally child friendly. I obviously haven't met any of them

Should I make the effort to go? I was single for 5 years before this and am very independent and set in my ways. Sometimes I have to check that I am not being too independent and I am letting him in enough! He is very easygoing and always very happy to fit in with my life and doesn't make many demands or requests of me. Am I being churlish not going?

Typing it out, I feel like I am BU - so would welcome your thoughts. thanks!

Good for you OP have a great time xx

I have been to edinburgh for the festival before for work (we sponsored a comedy show) - it's brilliant.

Chose flying for reasons I have mentioned - more interesting for DD as different bits to journey, plus journey time door to door will be 3.5 hours compared with 6 hours on train if you factor in travel time either side. And same price more or less.

Think the trams run from the airpott now

To the locals, that should say! Unless you want a tirade about them!

Mrsjayy · 09/07/2014 14:53

Oh aye dont metion the trams Grin

Pumpkinpositive · 09/07/2014 14:57

Vis-a-vis the trams, a colleague tells me you're quicker walking.

I still want to try them out though.

AMumInScotland · 09/07/2014 15:13

They do apparently give a very smooth ride....

My mum was one of the 'testers' when they asked for volunteers to try out getting crowds on and off. She fell asleep on the way back from the airport...

TheLovelyBoots · 09/07/2014 15:15

I got a flight on BA for 49 last July to Edinburgh. Not sure why. I searched flights only out of desperation because the trains were so expensive.

skinoncustard · 09/07/2014 15:20

Yep the tram runs from the airport, but your quicker, cheaper and it stops in the centre of Edinburgh ( Waverley Station) and numerous places en route. The trams stop is the middle of Princes Street then not till St Andrews Square . I am glad you are going to make the journey north . It's not the end of the world. Depending where in London you are the plane is not any quicker than the train (4-45 hours) when you take into account travelling to airport, having to get there long before flight, security, journey to city at other end ( approx 40 mins) depending on time of day. Personally centre to centre, I would opt for the train. Hope the weather is kind to you , Edinburgh in August is buzzing with the Festival . I am sure you and your DD will have a super time.

skinoncustard · 09/07/2014 15:23

Oops sorry, the bus is quicker, cheaper etc !!

Oriunda · 09/07/2014 16:37

We took DS to Edinburgh last year when he was 16 months. The train is v civilised and relaxing. Edinburgh Zoo worth a visit and the Botanic Gardens are free and beautiful.

slithytove · 09/07/2014 16:53

Have a lovely time!

Edinburgh Zoo worth a visit

Ooooh yes, you must go to the zoo.

Word on the street is that Tian Tian is up the duff. Cake

HotDogJumpingFrogAlburquerque · 09/07/2014 17:19

Haggis pakora is a must-have. Enjoy!

motheroftwoboys · 09/07/2014 17:28

Train journey is easy peasy and one of the most beautiful there is. Great deals available. Have you been to Edinburgh before? If not you will be blown away. One of our fave places but we live in newcastle so just up the road.

Oleoleole · 09/07/2014 17:43

Don't go to Edinburgh zoo with a hangover...it fecking stinks...especially the penguins.

Janethegirl · 09/07/2014 18:28

Definitely recommend the Botanic Gardens if you can fit a trip in.

Mrsjayy · 09/07/2014 20:43

Yes she has a bun in the oven apparently you need to book to see the pandas im sure you can do it at the gate though, im planning to do london next year we are flying ive decided

PhaedraIsMyName · 09/07/2014 20:48

Where is it? If it's near any of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Fort William or Inverness you can get a sleeper.

I regularly go to London from Edinburgh for 1 night, sometimes just for the day.

PhaedraIsMyName · 09/07/2014 20:49

Definitely train, can't remember when I last flew to London.

PhaedraIsMyName · 09/07/2014 21:03

You will be quicker and cheaper on the airport bus than the tram. Edinburgh is bursting at the seams in August.

2rebecca · 09/07/2014 22:03

I live in Scotland and have relatives near London and wouldn't visit them for a weekend unless it was an emergency eg when my mum was dying. With a 2 year old it sounds madness.
