What the hell is this? I always fancied trying it - it looked nice, sounded nice by the description, it was the co op truly irresistible range (normally I enjoy that brand of cake), had a cup o tea with it too, but it is shite in a box Sad I ate it anyway

Surely it is just chocolate cake with nasty tasting red food colouring? Oh god the shitty fake aftertaste, it just will not go away. It's enough to put me off cake for 24 hours

Home made one is lovely.

Sob story here - it was step-son's birthday yesterday, and his sster baked a red velvet cake. Dh had previously fallen out with his daughter, so the fatc that we were being treated to some of this cake at all was rather wonderful. And yes, the taste and moistness were great.

But I've been disappointed by mass-produced red velvets.

MuttonCadet · 29/06/2014 18:00

All the recipes I have seen have called for a huge amount of bloody disgusting red food colouring.

Please tell me that there is another way.....

Cocolepew · 29/06/2014 18:03

DD2 bought a boxed one to make, it was the nicest cake I've ever had. (Sorry Gran)

OscarWinningActress · 29/06/2014 18:03

It's a cream cheese frosting vehicle for those who don't like carrot cake. It's not about the cake!

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 29/06/2014 18:05

Back my dm hated meringue Shock . She never let me experience its sweet cruncy chewiness. Sad
Someone should have called SS. Takes a village to raise a child and all that.

mumtobetothree · 29/06/2014 18:07

Co-op red velvet cake made my poop red Confused

Slight panic there before the proverbial penny dropped!

JugglingFromHereToThere · 29/06/2014 18:11

Mmmm, lemon meringue Smile

Talking of meringue I made a great Eton mess the other day with strawberries, cream and meringue (nests) all on special offer at Sainsbury's ATM. Was divine. DS was in heaven. DH said DS's version with added chocolate digestives was the best pudding he'd ever eaten.

But yes, red velvet cake seems an over rated fad? It's probably all about the cream cheese frosting for crazy fools who don't like carrot cake? But then I'm not sure I've ever had one made to the proper. original recipe, which sounds intriquing

Morrisons used to do a lovely one but like everything else I take a liking to they stopped stocking it as it wasn't selling.
My taste is obviously too superior for this town.

I have tried loads of recipes but they are all dry and disappointingly not red.

kali110 · 29/06/2014 18:27

Tesco do red velvet slices that are so good. Packet gine in two days.

kali110 · 29/06/2014 18:28

Not big fan of the cupcakes though as they're basically chocolate cakes with icing.

cardibach · 29/06/2014 18:30

I like the Café Nero Red Velvet. It seems to have got less moist and velvety lately though :(

JugglingFromHereToThere · 29/06/2014 18:33

StillFriggin Shock never had Eton mess either? You have some serious meringue eating catching up to do girl Grin

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 29/06/2014 18:34

The cafe bar near me sells red velvet it's delicious and no taste of colouring. It's quite dense but also light and not heavy if that makes any sense at all. Delicious cream cheese frosting on too. Perfect after doing the food shopping or even just doing the banking for work, there's always a queue Wink

TeenageMutantNinjaTurtle · 29/06/2014 18:45

I thought I was the only person in the world that felt like this about red velvet cake! Thank you OP!!

I've made the hummingbird recipe and just left out the ludicrous amount of red... It's just as tasty...

Sallystyle · 29/06/2014 18:49

It's not really chocolate cake. It only has two tablespoons of coca powder in it.

If you get a really good recipe it is quite good. It is better with sour cream in it.

WaxyDaisy · 29/06/2014 18:50

This I might be tempted to try.

nooka · 29/06/2014 18:55

I made red velvet cake from a traditional American cook book with fancy cocoa, buttermilk and vinegar. It was very disappointing, quite boring really. But then I also think that of a lot of chocolate cake recipes. Hard I think to make a really good chocolate cake, most taste much better before they are cooked! dd makes a cracking brownie though. She was involved with the red velvet experiment so I don't blame my poor baking skills :)

Oh and virtually all shop bought cakes are just nasty. There is some flavouring used (possibly artificial vanilla) that leaves a horrible aftertaste and they are all too sweet for me.

RhiWrites · 29/06/2014 19:03

Sainsburies red velvet cupcakes are like crack in a muffin case. Could eat all day...

Toadinthehole · 29/06/2014 19:14

Is there a difference between frosting and icing?

PitchSlapped · 29/06/2014 19:15

Red velvet cake might be the most over rated cake ever made. Bland and boring...it might look beautiful but always disappointing. I have tried home made and shop bought ones and they are all rank

DarylDixonsDarlin · 29/06/2014 19:29

Ah good I'm glad lots of you agree. Cake is too important to mess with like that! Cake

I had a home baked orange and almond cake today. That had real class!

nooka · 29/06/2014 19:31

It won't be made of beetles. Way too expensive!
