What the hell is this? I always fancied trying it - it looked nice, sounded nice by the description, it was the co op truly irresistible range (normally I enjoy that brand of cake), had a cup o tea with it too, but it is shite in a box Sad I ate it anyway

Surely it is just chocolate cake with nasty tasting red food colouring? Oh god the shitty fake aftertaste, it just will not go away. It's enough to put me off cake for 24 hours

For colour in a cake, a layered cake with coffee cake, chocolate cake and vanilla looks great and tastes great too - no unnatural flavourings.

grocklebox · 29/06/2014 19:47

2 quid cake? How good do you think that is going to taste? Hint, its not at all.
YABVU to judge a type of cake by the shitty mass produced one you bought.

greeneggsandjam · 29/06/2014 19:48

When its good its good but when its bad its... boring and just like a red sponge really. Mmmm Hummingbirds Red Velvet cake!

RedRoom · 29/06/2014 21:27

I had one from Hummingbird Bakery and it was rank.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 30/06/2014 12:09

I'm not keen on hummingbirds recipes, the chocolate brownie one is disgusting. I make a mean brownie using mary berries recipe, but used the hummingbird one for a change and yuck, nobody ate it. was far too sweet and not very chocolaty.

anonacfr · 30/06/2014 12:14

Go to the Real Baking Co in Greenwich market (weekend only) and buy one of their red velvet cakes.

I GARANTEE you it will change your mind.

Stinkle · 30/06/2014 12:23

I make it quite a lot, everyone here seems to love it.

It's not really just chocolate cake stained red.

There's really very little cocoa powder in it so it's not proper chocolatey chocolate cake if you see what I mean. It also has vinegar and buttermilk which gives it a certain texture.

I don't always bother to add the red food colouring, but if I do, I use the really intense gel colours so you don't add enough to affect the taste of the cake

ElephantGoesToot · 30/06/2014 12:32

From reading the articles, you need to find cocoa that isn't dutch process, which can be a bit hard now, as most of it is. It's to do with a chemical reaction between unprocessed cocoa, buttermilk and vinegar.

I'd rather make this cake anyway (and frequently do).

WyrdByrd · 03/07/2014 01:03

I'll probably get lynched for this but...

I attempted to make RV cake from scratch a couple of years ago and was really disappointed - am normally pretty good at baking so fairly sure it wasn't me!

Recently decided to have another go for my parents ruby wedding anniversary, but used a Betty Crocker packet mix.

It was lovely Blush Smile .

Coumarin · 03/07/2014 03:38

I find most of the Hummingbird recipes too sweet. I've never understood Red Velvet either, the ones I've seen/tried have been chocolate cake dyed red.

Are the Magnolia Bakery ones the real deal?

JustLikeHoney · 03/07/2014 03:49

As others have mentioned Red Velvet cake should have buttermilk/vinegar in it which helps give a rich yet light texture.

TheNewStatesman · 03/07/2014 04:24

YANBU. Utterly disgusting cake. You can't put more than a tiny amount of cocoa in it in order to maintain the red color, so you end up with this weak-watered-down-slightly-chocolatey bland cake. The thought of all that food coloring is off-putting too. And I hate cream cheese frosting--I think it tastes the way baby sick smells.

Suzietwo · 03/07/2014 04:45

It's the moussey quality which makes it stand apart from other cakes but I agree, no need for the colouring

AllHailTheBigPurpleOne · 03/07/2014 06:36

I shan't buy this cake now.
I shall save for choccywoccydoodah instead

londonrach · 03/07/2014 07:43

Never eaten one as they look awful. Take it they taste as bad as their look. Don't get the cupcake with lots of cream on top. Waste of a good fairy cake...

Purplewithred · 03/07/2014 07:53

I got a choccywoccydoodah cake for dds 21st. Looked great but sadly disappointing to eat - cake a bit dry and armour plated in not very nice tasting chocolate. And very very expensive.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 03/07/2014 08:03

There was a thread on here ages ago about the choccywoccydoodah cakes, nobody rated them at all. Over priced and over hyped was the general opinion!

Red Velvet is boring. All the ones ive had have been pretty blah.

ShelaghTurner · 03/07/2014 08:19

Not fussed either way on the colour, although they do look nice, but the texture is amazing when they're done right. They were the first thing I made in my kitchen aid and they were lush.

HatieKokpins · 03/07/2014 09:07

Choccywoccydoodah is awful, I wouldn't give them my money ever again. Dry cake and thick, tasteless "chocolate" coating. Looks amazing, but URGH! Vile.

Joysmum · 03/07/2014 09:18

Surely that's like saying you don't like lasagne based on having eaten a cheap ping meal!

WyrdByrd · 03/07/2014 16:11

Another one that thinks Choccywoccydoodah cake is pants, but if you can get to one of their cafes in London or Brighton the ice cream sundaes and milkshakes are amazing!

EElisavetaofBelsornia · 03/07/2014 16:57

I tried that Co-op one, yes nasty. Beetroot and frosting OTOH sounds lovely. Anyone have a recipe?
