Am I being mean or un neighbourly?

I have far to much stuff, I've got 4 DC and they just seem to have so much stuff! Doesn't help that I've moved house several times and still have stuff in black bags that haven't been opened over 3 house moves!

So I've saved up and hired a skip. I don't drive so couldn't get to the tip and when though skips are expensive it seemed like the best option.

It arrived an hour ago. I am pathetically excited about filling it up and clearing some space in the house.

My neighbour knocked my door, I think he lives about 5 doors down as I only vaguely recognise him. He said he was clearing his spare room and asked if he could put his stuff in my skip!

I said no, because I don't know how much if it I will fill myself, and if his stuff is in it there might not be enough room for mine, I've paid £200 to hire it for the week so want to get maximum use out of it. I've got lots to put in it including a table and chairs, a bed etc so big stuff. I can't afford to pay for another skip.

I explained that to him and he was pretty annoyed and said it was un neighbourly and selfish.

I asked him if he wanted the number of the skip hire place I used but he said he couldn't afford his own skip. I was going to suggested that he waited until I had finished to see what space was left but didn't when he called me selfish.

No!

buggerboooo · 18/06/2014 14:00

No! Fuck him and his rude entitled attitude

Cornettoninja · 18/06/2014 14:01

Yanbu, don't worry about it and keep any eye on what goes in there in case he sneaks stuff in overnight.

CMOTDibbler · 18/06/2014 14:01

YANBU - you've paid for it, and are entitled to fill it.

wowfudge · 18/06/2014 14:01

God no - what a rude man. And an absolute cheek.

rememberingnothing · 18/06/2014 14:01

Put a cover on it tonight - you may find it fills itself up by magic otherwise!

MangoBiscuit · 18/06/2014 14:02

Ha ha ha ha! Cheeky fucker! No, YANBU, he however, is being a twat! Grin

ProfYaffle · 18/06/2014 14:02

We had a similar situation with a neighbour. We also said could they wait a day or two and if there was room after we'd chucked our stuff in the skip then they could put theirs on top. We woke up the next morning to their stuff in our skip anyway Hmm We would've dumped it all back on their lawn if we'd known which house they came from.

50KnockingonabiT · 18/06/2014 14:03

how rude of him. Don't be surprised if you get up one morning to find it full of other folks stuff.

rowna · 18/06/2014 14:03

No, that's very cheeky. I'd be peeping out my curtains tonight though.

justmuddlingalong · 18/06/2014 14:04

Roll up to his with the kids at teatime. Tell him you're a bit short of money and would like to have dinner at his. Cheeky shit that he is.

Fullpleatherjacket · 18/06/2014 14:07

He's a knob and a cheeky knob at that but get going with your clearout or it will be full with other people's crap by tomorrow morning!

TwoInTheMourning · 18/06/2014 14:08

Wow, that's unbelievably rude and entitled of him. With that sort of attitude, I wouldn't even let him use my skip even if I had space. Like the others have said, he sounds like the sort of person that would sneak up in the middle of the night and chuck his junk in your skip. I suggest that you and your 4 DC take turns to watch the skip overnight!

Mouthfulofquiz · 18/06/2014 14:10

That really fucks me off - what a twat!
Go to the tip if you can't afford a skip.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 18/06/2014 14:12

Wouldn't surprise me if he does it anyway.

Go and ask for the food out if his fridge that he's paid for. If he's neighbourly, he'll gladly give it to you.

toothurty · 18/06/2014 14:13

That would piss me off yanbu. And if you find other peoples stuff in it,take it out and leave it outside their house,or on the pavement if you dont know where its from.

RiverTam · 18/06/2014 14:16

no, though I guess you could have said that if there's room once you're done he can.

I would get it filled asap else you may well find he's filled it anyway!

Titsalinabumsquash · 18/06/2014 14:17

Agree with covering it or it will be full by morning. We had that happen to us so now we hire a mini skip and get them to deliver it first thing in the morning and collect it that evening so we can fill it during the say to stop neighbours using it as a private tip!

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 18/06/2014 14:18

Cheeky bastard!

OorWullie · 18/06/2014 14:20

I would get it filled as quickly as possible so that he can't just chuck stuff in anyway.

i would have offered him the option of chucking a few bits in once you were finished, but not now that he's been so rude.

Cuteypatootey · 18/06/2014 14:21

What a cheeky f*cker. Tell him that if you find any of hi stuff in it you'll expect a substantial contribution to the price of the skip.

InspirationFailed · 18/06/2014 14:35

I've been piling stuff in since it arrived - it's looking full already! I have a feeling he will dump stuff in as soon as I go out anyway, shame I don't know which house he lives in to dump it back. Glad I'm not being totally unreasonable, I was questioning myself!

Am I being mean or un neighbourly?

I would have asked him to pay for half of it! YANBU, you are clearing your house not providing a neighbourhood utility.

nyzz · 18/06/2014 14:42

Cheeky bugger. Good for you for telling me no, I'm such a wuss I would've said yes and then spent the rest of the week brooding!

Booooooooooooooooooooooooo · 18/06/2014 14:43

This made me laugh! When I was growing up it was common knowledge if anyone hired a skip in the area it had to be filled approximately 4 seconds after being delivered or else it would be filled for you. Without asking!

I was talking about this recently to a friend from the same area - we were bothhuh? HTF did that used to be ok? ALthough it still goes on and we just don't see it as we don'tlive there any more.
