I've just read about this - if the German's couldn't capture him, how did they nursing home think they'd keep him in???? Good for him!!!

Miserable nursing home - they should've been going out of their way to ensure he got there, not trying to stop him.

I think it's wonderful! Lovely story. But does make you wonder about the care home, and how we patronise older people. Anything to make the care home's life easier, rather than actually helping him to get there.

I always get a bit tearful seeing veterans at this sort of thing. I was watching it earlier and wondering what they were thinking and how the memories must be flooding back. I got all choked up watching them.

I must admit I wept today when one of the veterans said he could see the faces of all his fallen comrades on the beach. I cannot imagine the horror and suffering they witnessed, truly humbling.

Hopefully the story has got slightly lost in translation and he was simply advised that they thought he wasn't up to it rather than being 'banned' by officious care staff. Either way they were wrong though weren't they? What a marvellous example of how you can do the things you really want to do. God bless him and his brothers in arms and I hope they are having a marvellous weekend. They deserve it.

Always makes me cry when the war vetarans tell me they are not allowed to handle the pins for the poppies. ...they were allowed to be under fire and n battle though...

I'm also enjoying seeing the Queen and Prince Philip there. They look like they are having a whale of a time tbh.

Good for him! I heard this on the radio on the way home from work and I don't understand why the care home had an issue with him going in the first place!

Apparently the police found him in Normandy! I really must travel more - I've never been to France. If an 89 yr old can do so can I hopefully.
Glad he made it there.

He may have an ongoing condition that he struggles to manage, he may have just come out of hospital, he may be falling a lot - there are lots of reasons why he could be advised to stay at home. Bottom line though is that he's an adult with (I assume) capacity to make decisions so if he chooses to sneak out of his home with his medals then all the more power to him! These are men who changed the world. The care home staff had no chance did they?

Just seen more info here The home say they didn't ban him, they just couldn't get him on an official tour so told him he couldn't go. They should have hidden his passport

Ah, OK. Maybe they should have let him make his own arrangements
