No idea why the care home said he couldn't go, but he seems to be safe and well.

good for him I say

What a man :)

The Queen looked tickled pink when she was being helped down the stairs by Obama and the gentleman from New Zealand.

I do like the Queen.

Abra1d · 06/06/2014 18:08

Brilliant story.

Mrsdavidcaruso · 06/06/2014 18:12

Mrsmaturin could be the usual cover their arse excuse, which are often trotted out when something captures the public imagination.

Anyway he ignored them and went any way

Six of one, half dozen of the other. He's probably a difficult old cuss, which is probably what keeps him going at 89. It is courteous to let people who care about you know where you're going, no matter what your age.

FreeSpirit89 · 06/06/2014 18:15

Bless him. Good on him though, they probably didn't try to get him on the tour, to much hard work.

Mrsdavidcaruso · 06/06/2014 18:17

But then limited they would have stopped him and he didn't want that.

Good on him. I have tears in my eyes reading it.

SelectAUserName · 06/06/2014 18:18

I love this story. His resourcefulness and determination to pay tribute is an inspiration.

PPaka · 06/06/2014 18:19

that made me cry
Bless him

MrsMaturin · 06/06/2014 18:23

I suspect they tried one route and then gave up and yes i'm sure he is pretty stubborn strong willed Grin

Itsfab · 06/06/2014 18:24

I started a thread in Chat about this.

What an incredible man and I hope the nursing home are ashamed of themselves. How dare they dictate what he can and can't do. I hope they are not unkind to him when he gets back.

LottieJenkins · 06/06/2014 18:25

Well done him! It reminded me of the Sitcom set in the Old People's Home!

limitedperiodonly · 06/06/2014 18:29

It makes a lovely story and believe me, I have very personal reasons for championing the rights of people of that age and older to be free.

However, it's irresponsible reporting by the BBC News website, again, because they are always doing it.

Whoever made that tweet from Brighton and Hove Police deserves to be severely disciplined.

I'm not trying to be a killjoy but they have suggested that the care home were acting like jailers. As other posters have said, there's no suggestion that they banned him from doing anything. They were just concerned about him. That's good, isn't it? Time and again we hear about care homes where the staff don't give a toss about the residents.

He went missing from their care. What were they supposed to do? If your 89 year old dad or granddad went missing from his care home and had more than likely undertaken quite a difficult journey, wouldn't you expect them to tell the police?

That's why I'm so angry with the dolt from the police.

ManWithNoName · 06/06/2014 18:29

What a fabulous story. Good for him.

Its made me think of my Grandad who was in the Royal Navy like this man and also at the D Day Landings on the Rodney which is the battleship that really did sink the Bizmark just a few years earlier (never believe what the history books say). He would be almost 100 now had he lived. Men and women who were lived through that time will not be with us very long and its important we mark this day for them and listen to their eyewitness stories.

TSSDNCOP · 06/06/2014 18:33

Well it sounds like the care hime tried to book him on a tour that would enable his great age and possible frailties.

The old geezer sounds like a real character and fair play to him.

But I think it's easier to portray him as an 89 year old freedom fighter to get a good story than stick to the more boring version.

meditrina · 06/06/2014 18:39

The report says that the home did not ban him at any stage, and that they'd been helping him find a RBL tour he could join.

If he just vanished and no one knew where he was, of course the home should have reported him missing as they did.

It sounds like a miscommunication now being blown out of all proportion on Twitter.

LottieJenkins · 06/06/2014 18:39

Doesnt he look like the old man in Up????

To think this DDay veteran is a total legend
Stinkle · 06/06/2014 19:01

Good on him, although from reading the link the care home didn't ban him. They'd tried, but failed, to get him on an official tour but he went anyway without telling them. They reported him missing as they didn't know where he way

They're all legends though

Groovee · 06/06/2014 19:04

Well he managed to get himself there. Glad he managed to have his time in Normandy.

Mrsdavidcaruso · 06/06/2014 19:16

This is the bit that makes me think

He said: “In fact staff at the home tried to get Mr Jordan on to an accredited tour with the Royal British Legion, but due to the last minute nature of the request this was not possible.

If this is actually true (and I would like to hear from the RBL themselves on this) how did he manage to book himself on a coach, ferry and then a hotel at the last minute once he was told he couldn't go on the trip, I would imagine that you would have had to book all 3 well in advance due to the sheer numbers of people travelling and staying there.

OP posts:
mrsmopps · 06/06/2014 19:28

I worked in a care home for several years and never knew any of the residents to be allowed out alone, even the more able ones. I'm not sure I believe that they couldn't get him on a trip, how did he manage to get there himself?

limitedperiodonly · 06/06/2014 19:39

OP why is it the RBL's fault? Maybe he delayed it. People sometimes do that.

Presumably he decided to get up and go at the last minute and got a ticket.

Good. But I also think it's good that the care home told the police and I think it's appalling that the police appear to have ridiculed them for having a duty of care.

AuntieStella · 06/06/2014 20:08

Maybe it was a last minute scrabble for a seat if he was waiting until his passport was issued before booking travel?

< sorry, I'll get my coat>

limitedperiodonly · 06/06/2014 20:14

It's lazy reporting. ' Ooh! Lovely wobbly D-Day veterans.' Tears in my eyes. Jumpers for goalposts.

And the police tweet makes it worse.

Mrsdavidcaruso · 06/06/2014 20:14

As I said in my post I would have thought he would have had to book coach, ferry and hotel well in advance not last minute, not saying its the RBL fault but would like their confirmation that the home did indeed try and book last minute after all we only have the homes word that they did.

I actually do not think, unless he was unwell before that a man hell bent on going would have delayed asking his home to organise it, I would imagine it would be something he would have thought about for a long time, after all its going to be one of the last times people will get together and go there.

Just saying until things are confirmed (if they ever are) I am not going to believe the usual 'damage limitation' statements from the care home
