Got petrol yesterday, then went into shop to pay, had a browse, picked up a few things, queued, then when I was walking back to the car some bloke yelled at me that he'd been "waiting 10 minutes" behind my car while I did my shopping & I should have moved my car by the side of the shop before I went in to pay. I just ignored him as I felt HWBU as it wasn't busy & there were other pumps he could have used, but are you supposed to move your car? In front of the shop it clearly says "no parking" & I couldn't have moved it forward as no cars would have been able to get past.

YWNBU! I would have done the same thing.

softlysoftly · 02/06/2014 09:15

Depends on circumstances this annoys DH too but he wouldn't shout.

If it is v busy I move my car after filling before shopping. If it is very quiet and pumps free I don't.

If there is no parking then you can't move.

I wouldn't "browse" in that type of shop though it's moreof a fast top up.

SavoyCabbage · 02/06/2014 09:15

if there were other empty pumps, and he wasn't already behind you when you went to pay, then YANBU.

If I was going for a browse I would move it.

UterusUterusGhali · 02/06/2014 09:16

Couldn't he have reversed?

YANBU.

Morgause · 02/06/2014 09:17

If he couldn't get out the YWBU. If he could have reversed then YWNBU>

FoxSticks · 02/06/2014 09:18

YWNBU I got told off in the petrol station once for moving my car before paying and haven't done it since.

dexter73 · 02/06/2014 09:19

I never move my car when I buy petrol as there is nowhere to move it to. Sounds like this is case for you too so YWNBU.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 02/06/2014 09:19

Actually YABU. Once you have got your petrol have the courtesy to move to another space and let another driver fill up their car. Fair enough if you are just grabbing a couple of bits but 10 mins is very unreasonable. There were spaces yesterday but do you do the same thing when it's busy or would you pull forward then?

JimmyCorkhill · 02/06/2014 09:20

Don't move your car. I did this once when DH went in to pay and they shouted at me over the loudspeaker Blush until DH assured them I wasn't doing a runner.

flagnogbagnog · 02/06/2014 09:21

I thought that the next person couldn't use the pump until you'd paid anyway? So even if you did move your car the pump wouldn't become free to use until you reach the cashier and pay for the fuel you've used? Or have I just made that up?

HecatePropylaea · 02/06/2014 09:22

I thought that the pumps do not serve another person until what was on it (iyswim ) had been paid for. I am sure I read that.

Joolsy · 02/06/2014 09:22

He did reverse while I was in the shop & filled up at another pump & then shouted at me when I came out of the shop. Thanks all. I gave him a friendly wave as I was leaving, to show no hard feelings Wink

At our tesco express we are told yes, we should move our cars esp if busy.

Joolsy · 02/06/2014 09:23

Actually thinking about it I don't remember even seeing him behind me....

dexter73 · 02/06/2014 09:23

I think you are right flagnogbagnog, but I couldn't say as everyone leaves their car at the pump to pay before moving!

Valsoldknickers · 02/06/2014 09:24

Silly question maybe, but can anyone in the know answer whether a pump becomes available for use by the next customer if the preceding customer hasn't yet paid for their petrol?

Regardles, I don't think YWNBU btw, he sounds like a grumpy arse and if you had been a six foot tall bloke he probably wouldn't have said anything and probably would have given you a wave and a smile!

WooWooOwl · 02/06/2014 09:25

I didn't think anyone else could use a pump until the previous person had paid either.

This guy was being unreasonable. There are too many variables. It is annoying to get stuck behind someone, but quite often you would not need to be stuck behind someone shopping if they provided more space between pumps, or if a hug vehicle hadn't needed to fill up next to you, or if someone else hadn't driven in behind you.

If garages want to make money out of selling groceries and the like as well as petrol and fags, then it's up to them if sometimes their customers have to wait a little longer.

Valsoldknickers · 02/06/2014 09:26

*Regardless

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 02/06/2014 09:27

I got tannoyed once for moving my car, they thought I was doing a runner and told me the pumps don't reset till you've paid anyway.

It is annoying when you're waiting and you can see people pootling round the shop, but the shops are increasingly designed for more and more shopping eg the M&S ones, so I don't know what the answer is really. If it really was 10 mins and most of that was spent shopping not queueing then YABU, otherwise not really.

QueenofallIsee · 02/06/2014 09:28

I don't think you are supposed to move your car but if it was busy and I saw you having a browse in a petrol station (yours must be better than ours where all I would be browsing for is air fresheners and milk) I would probably have an under my breath mutter about it - I am so often in a rush.

HWBU to yell at you though, there is never a call for that

Writerwannabe83 · 02/06/2014 09:29

If there is the option I always move my car.
It's just basic manners not to hold everyone else up.

HecatePropylaea · 02/06/2014 09:30

Perhaps they should designate a couple of pumps as pay and go. You know, this row is pay for fuel only. this row is for if you are doing a bit of shopping.

Or maybe people could have an unwritten rule about it. furtherest to the left or whatever is for those who only want to get fuel, pay and leave.

Or a few 'pay at the pump only' ones. One near me has that. 2 pumps which are pay at pump only. They go through very quickly.

cos yes, when a petrol station is also a shop, people can't complain if folks shop in it!

There are solutions.

CSIJanner · 02/06/2014 09:32

YWNBU - I think al of the petrol stations around here do not allow you to move before paying for your petrol. He was being an arse.

Birdsgottafly · 02/06/2014 09:32

""Silly question maybe, but can anyone in the know answer whether a pump becomes available for use by the next customer if the preceding customer hasn't yet paid for their petrol? ""

It's individual and it can be over ridden.

I once waited over half an hour for water at the mini supermarket/petrol station in Beaumaris. There were spaces to move to.

I think you should pay for your petrol and then move, depending on your browsing time and were you are etc.

CSIJanner · 02/06/2014 09:33

Actually, thinking about Hecate says, he could have gone to a station with a self service pump
