Got petrol yesterday, then went into shop to pay, had a browse, picked up a few things, queued, then when I was walking back to the car some bloke yelled at me that he'd been "waiting 10 minutes" behind my car while I did my shopping & I should have moved my car by the side of the shop before I went in to pay. I just ignored him as I felt HWBU as it wasn't busy & there were other pumps he could have used, but are you supposed to move your car? In front of the shop it clearly says "no parking" & I couldn't have moved it forward as no cars would have been able to get past.

You are absolutely not meant to move. I did it once and they think you are leaving without paying.

skivingatwork · 02/06/2014 09:37

If there was nowhere to move to then YWNBU.

Maybe once people couldn't use pumps until previous person paid, but that is definitely not the case in the petrol stations I use.

I always move if I can - if I can't, I can't. I do try and limit my time in the shop though and wouldn't "browse" if there were people waiting for my pump - but this doesn't seem to have been the case though as I think you're saying there were other vacant pumps?

In all honesty, yes it pisses me off at a busy station when you see someone come back to their car with bags of shopping. Not as much as when someone has the option to pay at the pump but goes into the shop to pay AND USES THEIR CARD! Why not just pay at the pump????

But in your situation, where you could not move, then YWNBU.

sparechange · 02/06/2014 09:38

You can't move your car until you've paid! I've been told off by the casier for doing that in the past

I think that even if you did, the pump won't let anyone start using it until the previous transaction has been paid for, so it wouldn't have helped him

bloominbumpy · 02/06/2014 09:39

Yanbu

you can't use a pump until its been paid for anyway so moving your car would be pointless!

If your not supposed to shop why do they have so much in there?! Especially the ones with the costa coffee machines etc. I think some people are just too impatient! I don't think you should start doing your weekly shop but 10 minutes is hardly a crime!

what I do think is unreasonable is when people have finished their paying etc and then sit in the car and eat there sandwiches or whatever when someone else could be using the pump it's just unnecessary.

I don't think it's pointless not to move your car because the next person can't use it anyway.

Scenario 1): you move your car, the person behind you pulls into the petrol space, the minute you have paid he can begin.

Scenario 2): you don't move your car. You pay, wait for your receipt to print out, leisurely walk back to your car, get in and fiddle about with your purse and receipt, put your seatbelt on, turn your engine on and drive away when ready.

I know there's hardly any difference but those minutes can seem like a lifetime to the person who's been stuck behind you for Lord knows how long Smile

I know I've sat in my car waiting to pull into the petrol space and the person in front is just faffing about in their car. Am I the only one to have ever silently seethed, "What the fu*k are you doing? Just move!!"Grin

Actually it depends on the way they've set the system up. At the fairly large station I normally use, there is a mini supermarket attached, and if you spend more than £10 in there they give you 3p per litre off. You are encouraged to pull forward to parking bays in front of the shop when you've completed your fuelling, then go into the shop to pay and (hopefully from their point of view) spend £10 + on their overpriced shizzle stuff. Each pump's computer can hold several transactions so the pumps can be in continuous use at busy periods, but you need to remember how much you spent so you don't end up paying for the person before or after you.

However if there were no parking bays at this station I doubt they were set up for this system.

There's a Tesco mini-supermarket and petrol station near me which has signs up which ask you to move once you've filled up. The signs also say that the pumps can manage two transactions before they stop dispensing petrol. If there wasn't a sign I wouldn't move though - I'd be mortified if they used the tannoy!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 02/06/2014 10:48

I wish more of them had the pay at pump option, none of them round us have it. You can see why they don't though, they want you to have to queue up next to a massive display of tempting treats.

Nocomet · 02/06/2014 11:01

YANBU
Unless you were at two of our local Sainsbury's.

Both have tiny forecourts and cheapest petrol in their areas. They have massive queues. On being insanely planned to jam that end of the retail park.

Dawdling in the shops is not appreciated.

bigdog888 · 02/06/2014 12:18

Sometimes, even though it's quiet you could be at one of the only pumps that supplies the type of fuel someone else requires so it's not just a case of using another pump - this happens to me occasionally. Many petrol station systems can hold 2 or 3 transactions in memory so it is quite possible fill up before the previous user has paid.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 02/06/2014 12:33

I can see his point. It's one thing leave your car at the pump if you intend to quickly pick up an item or two en route to the checkout, it's another thing to fill up and then browse the shop.

The pumps might be empty at the time you leave your car but that can change really fast.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 02/06/2014 12:35

WhoKnows, god yes. I fill up at Tosca for this very reason... 'pay at pump', so, so convenient!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 02/06/2014 12:35

Tosca? TESCO! Shock
