Thinking women's magazines have had their day

I was given a copy of Marie Claire. I just read it. Why? Adverts. Adverts. Hard adverts hard to bend. Samples.

Shit trite editorial and letters "I read the article on North Korea im so pleased to live in Europe". Yup thanks for that.
Articles on what it's like in the hamptons. A big on dodgy abortion providers. Pages on a woman in the desert with skeletal legs. See pic.

Then the most hilarious "get the look for less" see pics.

Can't really see picture no. 2, but I'm quite shocked that they are still irresponsible enough to put the model in no.1 forward as anything to aspire to.

I gave up on mags ages ago when it became clear that they think their readers aren't able to maintain attention for anything longer than a couple of paragraphs.

Local shop keeps trying to see ok, now and hello for 50p when you buy something. No interest so said no each time. Agree magazines all about none people who say they happy one minute, the divorce, split up etc. they not real. Think they might need to rethink their market. Only one worth reading is woman's weekly as love the craft bits, stories etc but I don't buy it. It cones from next door neighbour who kindly passes it on to me. I then take to clinic waiting room.

I wouldn't buy one and haven't for years. They're full of adverts and some of the articles seem to be rehashed from their American counterpart. There's much better stuff available online.

I would rather read Take a Break, cheaper, and more crap to read. About 25 years ago Marie Claire used to be really good, now it's rubbish.

I used to love the People's Friend. I had a very elderly aunt who had tons of them. The continuing stories kept me well occupied as a bored teenager. Grin

Marie Claire used to be the best one, lots of in-depth interesting articles but agree pretty crap now. I only read magazines when I'm at the hairdressers, & end up looking at the celeb fashion fail type ones which I don't like either!

Every so often I think "I know, I'm going to treat myself to a trashy magazine and read it in the bath". And I go through the whole of the trashy magazine rack and cannot find a single solitary thing I'm actually prepared to spend money on.

Then I go home with New Scientist, National Geographic or Private Eye. Again.

I think the market for 'general readership' print magazines is vanishing.

I took my seven year old to buy a comic on Saturday, and we came away with nothing. 90% of them were comprised of 10 or so pages, full of adverts, and even things like National Geographic Kids are a bit short on actual things to read.

I just look for stuff online now.

I used to have subscription on the Glamour magazine. Yanbu in it being full of adverts and crap articles. Everyone works in an office apparently. That's all they focused on.

I bought a few of them for going into Labour:Elle, Garcia, etcc... I'd never normally buy but needed something for no concentration... We'll they weren't even good enough for that!

Living abroad when I go to the Uk I generally buy Marie Claire, Good Housekeeping, WOman and Home , Glamour, Cosmo ( used to buy She and Red ) . I have noticed that the quality is shite , the content repeated ( think 6 mth intervals), increase in adverts . I don't know many of the celebs in Ok and Hello so now I don't really bother .

Longdistance YES! That has always irritated me - we aren't all stuck in offices and it's not the only thing for young girls to aspire to. Where are the teachers, nurses, scientists, manual labourers and even hospitality trades?

I counted adverts vs actual content in glamour once. The magazine would be FAR thinner and probably a lot poorer if they were gone (including the classifields - not everyone lives in London anyway!).

I have a subscription to Red that was £12 for 12 issues and is probably not even worth that. I will not be renewing when it runs out.

Each magazine is probably 200+ pages long and 80% adverts that I don't even look at.

There is the odd interesting article, but most of the writing is absolute dross with irritating phrasing and tired cliches such as 'rock the look' and 'invest in this handbag'.

Anyone wanting to pick up something to read during a journey, or from the supermarket, etc would probably be better off buying a paperback book - the cost is about the same and the book would last much longer.

I was amazed at how much quality content the US ones have ( brought them in airport to read). Very thick, interesting articles and it's fun seeing what's trending in the States.
Ours are shite.
Quite like Prima actually as has some relevant articles but feel embarrassed to buy a "mums mag".

The only woman's mag I ever buy now is People's Friend. I know it looks like an old lady one, but it's got some decent fiction in it. The rest are 100% shite.
