Thinking women's magazines have had their day

I was given a copy of Marie Claire. I just read it. Why? Adverts. Adverts. Hard adverts hard to bend. Samples.

Shit trite editorial and letters "I read the article on North Korea im so pleased to live in Europe". Yup thanks for that.
Articles on what it's like in the hamptons. A big on dodgy abortion providers. Pages on a woman in the desert with skeletal legs. See pic.

Then the most hilarious "get the look for less" see pics.

hmm, I must say, I don't think the first picture is all that bad, she's not too thin but the lighting does make her upper arms look smaller than they are at first glance, although there's something strange going on with her elbow, it looks like shes twisted it round, but her hand is the wrong way for the elbow shape, have their put a different hand on that arm??? Legs don't look 'skeletal' at all, just slim.

Anyway, must agree I don't buy them anymore and stopped a few years ago, but I know a lot of woman who do, and they tend to be the ones who are very interested in fashion and make huge efforts with their appearance (even on a budget). I gave up trying to be 'cutting edge' about 10 years ago, now will go for stylish and highstreet fashionable, but not it's a long time since I was an 'early adopter' of any style...

(Must say, I like the idea of reading "the lady" but I just can't, I'm not posh enough)

MyrtleDove · 13/05/2014 14:14

Mary I am incredibly common but I enjoy The Lady. I enjoy The Lady and Take A Break completely unironically. Also, I do like Rachel Johnson since she became Jack Monroe's champion.

Agreed OP. I sometimes buy Good Food/Olive/GH, but halfway through realise that they're mostly recipes rehashed from a few years back. I do pick up Waitrose Mag though, but it's free so I can't really complain.

Darkesteyes · 13/05/2014 14:33

Another one here who misses Eve.

I liked New Woman before that but that was before they went all celebrity so I switched to Eve back in 2006.
Also used to buy Scarlet. All 3 of these are gone.
Im another one who likes Psychologies I also buy Red but they've really pissed me off with their Red120 Fit Club which is thinly disguised fitspiration and not very well disguised at that.
Used to buy Easy Living which was cancelled last year.

I had last months Marie Claire for the article on Stevie Nicks and I had this months Glamour. Younger womens ones aren't as good as when we were younger.
I also still have one of the New Woman double album CDs they used to do as a sideline I have the CD from Autumn 2002.

StampyIsMyBoyfriend · 13/05/2014 14:38

Not bought them for years now, grudge the guts of a fiver, when most of it's adverts.

I stupidly subscribed to Glamour for a year, still running & all it's done is remind me why I don't buy magazines anymore.

So much online now, for free, that I can tailor to my interests.

Darkesteyes · 13/05/2014 14:41

I remember subscribers to Eve complaining when it was cancelled because they tried to fob customers off with Grazia Not quite the same thing.

limitedperiodonly · 13/05/2014 14:41

Come off it. Marie Claire was never any good. Did anyone really believe those features on remote tribes where old women ruled the roost and used young men for sex? They used to run them virtually every month.

Beeyump · 13/05/2014 14:45

I like Elle and Vogue. And read Grazia pretty much every week Blush

The amount of ads is annoying, but there's something about an unread glossy magazine that gives me a little thrill of expectation

Just also would like to add the weekend newspaper supplement mags to this discussion - does anyone else wonder who on earth they are aimed at? Especially the home/fashion pages. Blouses at £385??? Skirts at £259? Please. And the homeware is the same. Designer prices. Crazy. And the holidays at £3000 a week. How is this all normal?

And that's the Guardian! (Or the Times. The Style section just irritates me when I read it at the in laws.)

Am I the only person who thinks this each week?

I can't remember the last time I bought a mag. The DDs occasionally bring home Vogue, Glamour or some (US) teen time wasters. They come in handy for art projects and that is the only good thing about them.

I look at Rookiemag.org, an interesting online teen magazine with music, articles, street fashion, etc.

I also find Pinterest has everything I could hope or wish for in home decor, recipes, fashion, fitness, etc. And it is free.

mathanxiety · 13/05/2014 15:09

Gerbo, no, you are not.

Beeyump · 13/05/2014 15:31

I love the Times Saturday magazine!

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 13/05/2014 15:44

I quite like the Times Saturday supplements and the Observer Food Monthly, but YY to the laughable prices in the newspaper supplements.

We get the Times at work and we always laugh at the Friday property section, which includes 'interiors', for its comedy pricing.

I like Ikea and I think almost everything is decent enough quality, so am used to their prices.

So when you see ads for a rope lamp at 195 Shock, or tables that look like pasting tables or piles of railway sleepers for s, you just feel glad that the poor people with more money than sense are being properly catered for Grin.

Glad I'm not alone! And on ilkley - Grin

Vintagejazz · 13/05/2014 15:59

Feeling a bit nostalgic now for a woman's magazine with recipes for fruitcake and knitting patterns and a nice gardening article.

mathanxiety · 13/05/2014 16:07

My mum used to get Woman's Weekly. She used to tear off the problem page at the back Grin

Beeyump · 13/05/2014 16:09

Mmm, the problem page is the best Grin
