To Think Rachel Should Never Have Gone Back to Ross?

Stuck at home with sinusitus and DD on exam leave so lots of Friends reruns being watched (or tolerated in my case).

AIBU to think that Ross Geller was a boring, jealous, possessive, self absorbed, pedantic geek and that Rachel was much better off without him.

Witness...when he's in a relationship, he couldn't give two shits about what's happening to Rachel but the minute she gets involved with someone he's sabotaging it left, right and centre.

AIBU to think she should have stayed on that plane to Paris and left him whining eternally in Central Perk?

Is it 2004 in here? I'd better get my low-slung jeans and thong out of storage.

Grin

YANBU. Ross is the least sexy character to ever appear on TV. The end.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 07/05/2014 13:35

Ahhh but he loved her even when she had a giant nose. Thats got to count for something.

UnderIce · 07/05/2014 13:35

The one that's on right now is from 1999!!!

YANBU I started watching friends when I was maybe 8 or 9 and even then I didn't get why Rachel would date ross Hmm me and my sister actually used to have debates on who we would rather kiss more- Gunther or mr heckles we both would rather kiss Gunther than ross

chandler and joey were MUCH better than boring, jealous ross. and don't get me started in this "we were on a break". yes they were but... it took him like couple of hours to sleep with someone else. and he didn't hold his hands up and come clean he went around hiding it and then basically blaming Rachel for his stupid decision Hmm

Youdontneedacriminallawyer · 07/05/2014 13:39

I don't know what Rachel would ever have seen in Ross - he wasn't her type at all. IRL, she wouldn't have gone back, but they had to make a TV programme, and didn't want to bring in any more characters.

SoFishy · 07/05/2014 13:40

Yes! There is so much wrong with Friends even though I enjoyed it at the time. Phoebe was SO ANNOYING and would not be tolerated in any RL group of friends. Joey was the most two-dimensional character ever.

I started off actually fancying Ross, I love geeks me. But as it went on I was just appalled by him. So childish and pathetic. Rachel grew as a character - he didn't so by the end she was so far out of his league it was embarrassing. And the way he treated poor Helen Baxendale!!! The last straw was when he got a monkey. God it was all so lame.

clapofthunder · 07/05/2014 13:42

Witness...when he's in a relationship, he couldn't give two shits about what's happening to Rachel but the minute she gets involved with someone he's sabotaging it left, right and centre.

This Ross debate seems to be up there with parking spaces and ear piercings.

But, huh?

It's been quite a long time since I watched Friends but what relationships did he try and sabotage?

I remember he took Emily out so that Rachel could go on her date with Joshua.

The only relationship I distinctly remember him having an issue with was Bruce Willis (Paul?) but only because it was his girlfriends dad, which would be a bit weird for most people.

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 07/05/2014 13:43

They were NOT on a break.

WhatHo · 07/05/2014 13:43

Chandler was the only one vaguely worth shagging. And Charlie Sheen for the 2 mins he was in it.

beershuffle · 07/05/2014 13:43

Well if he is all those things then she is a shallow, ignorant, selfish, lazy, selfabsorbed airhead.

So they kind of deserve each other. theyre not real though

Nancy66 · 07/05/2014 13:44

She should definitely have kept Tag as her bit on the side....

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 07/05/2014 13:44

He not only tried to sabotage her relationships, he used and abused several women himself. He was a controlling, abusive shit.

Summerbreezing · 07/05/2014 13:44

None of the guys were great catches really. Ross was whiny and needy, Joe was as thick as two planks, and Chandler was the best of the bunch but seemed to set off everyone's gaydar.

The girls were just as bad. Rachel was shallow and materialistic, Phoebe was annoyingly eccentric, and Monica was an overly competitive hygiene freak.

No wonder they never seemed to hang out with anyone else and all ended up marrying each other. No one else would have them.

UnderIce · 07/05/2014 13:46

He hid phone messages off a guy who was trying to arrange a date with her. He was especially cunty about her dating when she was pregnant with the lesser-spotted "Emma".

Ok I suppose they weren't technically on a break coz Rachel suggested it but he never answered and stormed out. but if the HAD been on a break his behaviour was still shitty.

EffectiveCommunication · 07/05/2014 13:47

I agree Chandler was the best of the bunch. To be fair Ross was pretty messed up from his first wife cheating on him.

avocadogreen · 07/05/2014 13:48

The only one worth shagging was Phoebe's husband... Was it Mike?

I spent a day watching reruns last week when I was ill.The amazing thing is it still makes me laugh!

Nancy66 · 07/05/2014 13:48

Phoebe did the best with Mike

Marylou2 · 07/05/2014 13:50

I always secretly fancied Ross.I even fancy Melman the giraffe from Madagascar because of David Schwimmer's voice. Clearly I need help!

clapofthunder · 07/05/2014 13:50

He not only tried to sabotage her relationships

Again, what relationships did he sabotage?

Rachel didn't actually seem to have that many boyfriends on the show.

UnderIce · 07/05/2014 13:51

They had to end the series when Phoebe got with Mike as he showed the rest of them up to be ridiculous caricatures/constructs.

There was a really funny episode when Phoebe tried to shoehorn Mike and Ross into some semblance of a friendship. They spent an awful night in his apartment with nothing to say to each other, really socially awkward and uncomfortable.

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 07/05/2014 13:52

They shared a phone call where they both said they didn't want to be on a break and they wanted to be together. Then Ross heard Mark in the background, he hung up and went off to shag the Xerox girl. When Rachel found out, Ross said he only did it because he thought she slept with Mark. And he told Carol that Rachel cheated on him.

clapofthunder · 07/05/2014 13:53

I think Rachel sabotaged more of his relationships.

Julie and then she flew to London to stop his wedding.

UnderIce · 07/05/2014 13:55

OP here. Actually the sabotage thing was more Rachel's MO now that I think about it. She was a cow when he was dating Julie, Charlie and some other girl whom she persuaded to shave her head!!!

I take it back, they deserve each other!!

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 07/05/2014 13:55

Oh Rachel was awful too, granted. But I am merely addressing Ross.
