To Think Rachel Should Never Have Gone Back to Ross?

Stuck at home with sinusitus and DD on exam leave so lots of Friends reruns being watched (or tolerated in my case).

AIBU to think that Ross Geller was a boring, jealous, possessive, self absorbed, pedantic geek and that Rachel was much better off without him.

Witness...when he's in a relationship, he couldn't give two shits about what's happening to Rachel but the minute she gets involved with someone he's sabotaging it left, right and centre.

AIBU to think she should have stayed on that plane to Paris and left him whining eternally in Central Perk?

There was a really funny episode when Phoebe tried to shoehorn Mike and Ross into some semblance of a friendship.

No she didn't. Hmm

They decided to have a boys night because Rachel and Phoebe were already going out.

clapofthunder · 07/05/2014 13:58

Oh Rachel was awful too, granted. But I am merely addressing Ross.

But again, what relationships did he sabotage?

UnderIce · 07/05/2014 13:59

Er, ok.. clap, the general idea was the same. No need to get all "hmm" about it.

Somebody up thread already gave one example-Bill?, guy in the bar, Ross hid his message- but there are other examples too. Paolo, Mark for example. Can't get into it though, late for an appointment.

bibliomania · 07/05/2014 14:06

Bet it would have ended in a nasty divorce a few years down the line.

clapofthunder · 07/05/2014 14:10

Rachel was never in a relationship with Mark, they went on one date and Rachel admitted that she was using him to get back at Ross. I think all Ross did was wait for them to come back off their date - he never actually did anything.

Paulo, all I remember is he groped Phoebe and thats why they broke up.

And I agree about the message, but they had just had a baby together, were living together - she had made him promise beforehand not to date anyone and then they never discussed what their future was. So fair to say he was probably in a confusing situation.

It wasn't as if they'd broken up for years, and then he was in her apartment and took the message. Remember when Emily left Ross a voicemail and it was deleted by Rachel, and she debated for ages on whether to tell him or not. Then talked him out of calling her back.

Ummm ...you guys all know that Friends isn't real don't you? GrinGrin

squoosh · 07/05/2014 14:18

Monica should never have dumped Richard.

WhatHo · 07/05/2014 14:19

I love the way people are getting so serious - all Hmm faces and stuff as if this thread was in Relationships Grin

ninilegsintheair · 07/05/2014 14:20

Chandler should have married Janice! She was hilarious.

WhatHo · 07/05/2014 14:21

Charlie Sheen's finest hour

Well that and his turn in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

ICanSeeTheSun · 07/05/2014 14:25

I don't know why Emily married Ross, he kept saying Rachel during the wedding vows.

I can't believe he went to the airport to beg Rachel to stay, but he didn't mention his daughter.

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 07/05/2014 14:26

I never understood why poor Chandler had such confidence issues and couldn't seem to get any girls apart from Janice till he started shagging Monica. Good looking, funny, ok job, not clingy, didn't have bad hair unlike stupid ross and his parents were brilliant. 2 of the best guest stars in the whole series along with ross and Monica's mum and dad Grin

oh and Janice. god I loved Janice. even my 6 year old yells "oh. my. gooooooooooddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd!" in the same tone Grin

jay55 · 07/05/2014 15:02

What was so great about Rachel?

manicinsomniac · 07/05/2014 15:30

Awww, I like Rachel and Ross. Together and apart. All of the Friends are awesome because it is Friends.

But for relationship sabotage and nastiness Rachel beats Ross hands down.

Consider the point they start out from -

  • Rachel has just left a guy at the altar who she was only ever marrying for his money.
  • Ross has just been left by the only love of his life for a woman.

The pity has surely got to go to Ross.

PrincessBabyCat · 07/05/2014 15:32

I was bummed that Rachel didn't hook up with Joey when they were rooming together. I've always hated Ross.

Lilaclily · 07/05/2014 15:37

Monica should have married Richard
Phoebe should have married Hank Azaria
Chandler should have stayed with Cathy or Janice
Not sure about Joey , although he looks hot in Extras these days
Rachel should have stayed with Bruce Willis because he was hot

Greyhound · 07/05/2014 15:53

I found the Ross/Rachel on/on a break storyline very tedious. I guess the producers felt they had to get them together.

What I didn't like about Ross was his jealous streak.

WhoDaresWins · 07/05/2014 16:52

But he redeemed himself a bit when he bought Phoebe that bike?

puntasticusername · 07/05/2014 17:24

But Richard didn't want kids! And Monica couldn't not have kids! He said he'd do it for her, but that's not the same, is it?

Ahem.

MakeMineAMartina · 07/05/2014 17:34

for me its the other way round.
cant stand Rachel.

TheMaw · 07/05/2014 17:58

See, I always thought Monica was the least realistic character. She was a shrieking, neurotic pain-in-the-arse. Nobody would be friends with her in real life.

Aaand the only one I'd shag is Richard. Whom I would ruin.

TheSpottedZebra · 07/05/2014 18:05

David Schwimmer is the one who is most resistant to getting the Friends back together. I reckon it's 'cos even he thinks that Ross is a twat.
