I bought a new bottle of chanel no5 today from the perfume store £78!! I have been wearing for over 30 years and know what it smells like and when I opened it it smells nothing like it! I usually buy in Boots but just wanted to catch the bus and was closer. I rang them and they said no exchange or refund as opened Obviously its opened thats how I smelt it. Not sure what to do Dp just came in and said it stinks like cheap perfume from the market Shock

Is the perfume store a proper retailer of it though? Or is it a 'copy'?

Andrewofgg · 05/05/2014 18:16

And if you've been wearing Chanel No 5 for over 30 years just how does DP know what cheap perfume from the market smells like?

WooWooOwl · 05/05/2014 18:19

Try going direct to Chanel customer service?

noddyholder · 05/05/2014 18:20

It is a proper retailer yes. Have checked. My dp has probably been with lots of cheap floozies behind my back so can tell the difference

Get trading standards on the case. Maybe they've been taken in themselves (the shop) by a fake batch.

lastnightIwenttoManderley · 05/05/2014 18:31

Just a thought....someone somewhere could possibly have bought a crappy Market one, then bought the real thing and returned the fake? They then pay market prices but get the real thing. Would that be possible?

Presumably they have a sample. I'd go on with yours and ask them to compare the two. If no luck, agree trading standards should be next.

I agree Chanel customer services might be a good bet?

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 05/05/2014 18:55

Yep, if they are refusing to refund I would take it higher. Chanel or trading standards maybe? Have you for the receipt?

noddyholder · 05/05/2014 19:11

I have receipts everything yes. Only bought this morning. Literally too tired to walk back to Boots! They have said a point blank no Will email Chanel HQ now thanks for the advice.

WooWooo · 05/05/2014 19:17

It may be genuine but gone off? Ask for a replacement rather than a refund? Open replacement there and take a bottle of your own with you to prove the smell?

With fragrance if it is kept in a light or warm environment it will ruin.

noddyholder · 05/05/2014 19:19

I would take an exchange but they have said nothing I can't return it at all!

OP posts:
BeaLola · 05/05/2014 19:26

I am sure if it is faulty they have to exchange it. Keep all packaging and receipt and take it bAck in .... You could call shops head office first re customer service.

expatinscotland · 05/05/2014 19:27

It is defective. They have to offer refund. Contact Trading Standards and Chanel HQ.

superbagpuss · 05/05/2014 19:41

which perfume shop?

there is a market for grey market perfume in the UK - stock that is meant for European markets of different quality sold in the UK and as its the same brand the houses cannot stop it!, they just don't like it as its sold cheaper and therefore devalues the brand

so maybe its grey market if you don't normally buy from that shop and it seemed cheaper then normal?

MiloSimpson · 05/05/2014 19:48

I had a similar thing - the perfume had gone off and so I took it back to the shop and made them smell it and then compare it to the tester bottle that was out on display. Shop agreed and refunded.

Scousadelic · 05/05/2014 20:18

I had this with a bottle of K by Krizia at a local independent shop. Sadly she wouldn't budge on it so I have just never shopped there since

I would complain to their Head Office in the first instance

jacks365 · 05/05/2014 20:21

Sale of goods act states goods must be as described so take it in show them that it isn't genuine and insist on a refund or exchange if they refuse then contact trading standards stating you have been sold what is obviouslyccounterfeit perfume.

noddyholder · 05/05/2014 22:30

It was completely sealed. It was the perfume shop in the shopping centre. I will def pursue this it was same price as boots no cheaper

OP posts:
Pipbin · 05/05/2014 22:55

I agree, contact Chanel HQ, Trading Standards and inform the shop that you have done so.

I use a bottle over about 8 months so recent I have had an email back from the head office and they say they are going to get someone to contact me :)

CiderLover · 06/05/2014 15:06

I think that the person who said that someone had bought a cheap one and then returned it is probably right.

Surely not as OP has already stated that refunds arent allowed
