I bought a new bottle of chanel no5 today from the perfume store £78!! I have been wearing for over 30 years and know what it smells like and when I opened it it smells nothing like it! I usually buy in Boots but just wanted to catch the bus and was closer. I rang them and they said no exchange or refund as opened Obviously its opened thats how I smelt it. Not sure what to do Dp just came in and said it stinks like cheap perfume from the market Shock

"I think that the person who said that someone had bought a cheap one and then returned it is probably right."

But even if unopened they would need a receipt.

noddyholder · 06/05/2014 15:18

The shop I got it from do refund if it is completely sealed unopened.

Result! It's fake, they sold you a defective or fake product and this falls under Trading Standards. In such cases, they have to refund, not just give you credit or exchange.

wowfudge · 06/05/2014 15:44

Def go to trading standards as a first port of call if no joy with the retailer.

I'm betting Chanel have sneakily reformulated it to fit in with EU rules and will try to tell you the sky is pink.

A lot of perfumes have been reformulated (and not usually for the better, either). But I bought Chanel No. 5 recently and it smelled as it used to, so I reckon poor OP was sold a dud. Hope it's sorted.

"It's a scam, you buy one, swap with one from the market which costs about a fiver, then return the fake one and get your money back"

Would they give money back without a receipt?

Brucietheshark · 06/05/2014 18:27

Diddl - you have bought a legitimate one from that shop, so you have a receipt (for say £78).

But you return a dodgy one and get all your £78 back even though the dodgy one was a fiver. And you have a £78 bottle of perfume still at home.

Any clearer?

Sorry I misread & missed the bit about buying a real one first.
