To leave poorly DD to go out with DH

Me and DH are desperate for a meal out. But as always seems to be the case in our house at the moment one of our children is sick. DD has got a chest infection. Been to docs today and she's got antibis but her cough sounds so awful.

We've cancelled the GPs coming round but now I just don't know if I've been over the top. The pub and restaurant is only 5 mins drive away.

Do you mean you want to leave her on her own? Or with GP's? How old is she?

YABU - you can go out any time when ur dd is feeling better. She needs her parents when she's ill. Nothing compares to mummy when there I'll

I would have agreed with you and cancelled if you had to hire in a sitter but I would have left the DCs with their GPs unless either a) ill child was miserable and wanted me there or b) it was likely that ill child would get worse and need further medical attention whilst I was out.

Depends if the GPs are willing to look after her, and if she's happy to be left with them.

I'd be tempted to get a take-away tonight. She sounds pretty unwell and miserable.

ABs, loving grandparents and a five-minute drive? I'd go. It's not serious.

I think it would depend entirely on how she's feeling with it, whether she would feel ok without you, whether she's going to be asleep. If you think she'd be ok, and you're very close by, then go. But if she's miserable and wants you, then get a take away!

I'd want to stay in if they're very poorly and likely to be waking up a lot. I'd get a takeaway and some wine though.

Round here the GPs refuse to go anywhere near even vaguely ill children so there'd be no choice to make. I don't think I'd leave them with a chest infection anyway though, having had a run of them myself, they are pretty miserable.
Takeaway sounds a good idea!

We're staying in her coughing is horrendous. She's only one. I'm thinking of taking her to A&E.

If you are worried about her cough then phone 111 fir advice. A&E on Friday nights is usually rammed with -- drunks--

It is very disappointing to have to cancel - have had to do it lots of times sadly.
But I would never leave an ill dc with anyone...it's too much to ask in case they either pass the illness on or take a turn for he worse and need emergency care.
Hope she feels better soon.

DS had croup last week and had to get steroid from A&E. I'm a bit baffled as didn't think it was a passy-on thing?

Thanks Badvoc. Wouldn't have enjoyed myself. It's a shame but necessary.

Croup is caused by a virus.
Do keep a check on her breathing - I am sure you will.
Ds was rushed to hospital with it last year at about this time - scary stuff.

For a slightly older child, being left with grandparents, then I'd probably have gone But 1 year old is still only a baby, so I'd stay. I hope she feels better soon.

Croup can be viral or spasmodic which is caused by allergies, so may or may not be passed on!

Hi badvoc. Silly question but what do I watch out for? I check their resp rate through the night if I'm worried. Is there anything else?

I think as your other dc had it it is likely that if your dd has it the cause is viral.
You need to look out for obvious struggling with breathing, pulling in at the base of the throat and intercostal recessions - which are when the akin between the ribs pulls in.
This indicates that the person is struggling to get air in.
