To leave poorly DD to go out with DH

Me and DH are desperate for a meal out. But as always seems to be the case in our house at the moment one of our children is sick. DD has got a chest infection. Been to docs today and she's got antibis but her cough sounds so awful.

We've cancelled the GPs coming round but now I just don't know if I've been over the top. The pub and restaurant is only 5 mins drive away.

Thank you so much. I always feel OTT at A&E but I never take risks when it comes to their health and hope they understand that. I really detest it when they're ill like all mums I'm sure.

I know the aibu had kind of been and gone on this thread now, but read through and wanted to wish your Dd a speedy recovery! Whether its a chest infectionv(horrible in itself) or whether it's more serious. It's so awful when they're so small and unwell. Xx

Hi Badvoc! Just in from SECOND A&E jaunt - last night non stop coughing and tonight fast breathing. Absolutely dog tired. I'm praying she starts to improve soon.

I would happily leave a sick dc if my DM was looking after them it's not like my db's and I never got sick and she managed to bring us up perfectly fine. They are close to my DM and she drives and would stay overnight anyway so it's never been an issue.

At only a year old, babies can become ill very quickly...

Took her to GP today and they said chest infection but DH forget to mention the croup. DS is getting over his now so that's bound to be it isn't it?

I hate them being ill!

Howmuch, my DD has had a few chest infections - if your DD is struggling with breathing what you need to look out for is 'sucking in' at the base of the throat or their tummies. That indicates they are working really hard to breathe and may need oxygen or a nebuliser. My DD has been in hospital a couple of times with breathing problems so we're getting good at spotting it now! not caused by croup though.

If she's coughing - you should recognise the croup cough having just been through it, it's very distinctive. AFAIK, nothing else makes even a similar noise to a croup cough, so if she is barking, I'd take her in (your call whether she's comfortable enough so you can leave it till the morning). You could try steaming the room - my DS had croup at age 2 and it really helped him. We boiled the kettle in his room for a good 10-15 minutes before he went to bed so it was good and steamy.

When ds had it his sats were low so he got taken in, given a nebuliser and some oral steriods.

I think as your other dc had it it is likely that if your dd has it the cause is viral.
You need to look out for obvious struggling with breathing, pulling in at the base of the throat and intercostal recessions - which are when the akin between the ribs pulls in.
This indicates that the person is struggling to get air in.

Hi badvoc. Silly question but what do I watch out for? I check their resp rate through the night if I'm worried. Is there anything else?

Croup can be viral or spasmodic which is caused by allergies, so may or may not be passed on!

For a slightly older child, being left with grandparents, then I'd probably have gone But 1 year old is still only a baby, so I'd stay. I hope she feels better soon.

Croup is caused by a virus.
Do keep a check on her breathing - I am sure you will.
Ds was rushed to hospital with it last year at about this time - scary stuff.

DS had croup last week and had to get steroid from A&E. I'm a bit baffled as didn't think it was a passy-on thing?

Thanks Badvoc. Wouldn't have enjoyed myself. It's a shame but necessary.

It is very disappointing to have to cancel - have had to do it lots of times sadly.
But I would never leave an ill dc with anyone...it's too much to ask in case they either pass the illness on or take a turn for he worse and need emergency care.
Hope she feels better soon.
