To think husband is daft and irresponsible

He has a chest infection. Last day on antibiotics on Sunday.

Tomorrow he is setting off on his motorbike from London to Wales to climb Snowdon in the evening. Then on by motorbike to climb Scaffield Pike on Saturday, on to Scotland to do Ben Nevis on Sunday.

Hmm

I should add, he is very fit. But he is unwell.

Unless he is feeling much better, he is going to end up being one of 'those people' that get half way and have to be rescued.

He is being really silly and there is no way his chest will cope with altitude if he's recovering from a chest infection.

Sirzy · 01/05/2014 18:13

If he has nearly finished the antibiotics then he could be feeling much better. I am guessing it's not something which would be easy to rearrange so can see why he is still going surely he can stop if he feels ill?

Quintestinal · 01/05/2014 18:15

He is still coughing a lot and not feeling great.

His opinion is just "I will stop if I am not well".

It cant be rearranged easily, as they opted for this bank holiday weekend because his friends wife is pregnant, and they rather do it before she gets too heavy and while she still is able to cope with a weekend on her own. They also have an 18 month old.

yanbu, exerting yourself and altitude with a bad chest? not a good plan.

cardibach · 01/05/2014 18:19

I think that even if he manages to cope, what with being fit etc, he won't enjoy it. O, he'll be able to say he's done it, but surely the point is to enjoy it?

Catsmamma · 01/05/2014 18:21

he'll be sorry.

i had flu and a chest infection last year and i am STILL wheezing if i have to do anything hilly!

susiedaisy · 01/05/2014 18:21

Yanbu. But some people just need to learn for themselves.

Quintestinal · 01/05/2014 18:23

He is hardly ever ill, the worst he gets is usually a sore throat for 24 hours. I am not sure he realize how both the chest infection and the antibiotics can knock him for six.

He cycled to work today, in the rain. Not something I would do on antibiotics for a chest infection, but maybe I am just a vulnerable little daint flower.

He is being daft and irresponsible. He should wait until he's clear from coughing, and completely rested. I had a chest infection and 3 weeks on I'm still coughing a bit and had to stop all cardiovascular exercise as it's dangerous

Boobsofsteel · 01/05/2014 18:26

He will probably manage. It's not wise but Snowdon is not difficult if you go the main way. If it knocks him about he can stop after that.

My DH would do the same. So would I.

Quintestinal · 01/05/2014 18:30

But think about the timing.

Leaving work friday 4 pm, drive London Wales, and head straight up Snowdon - and down. Drive from Wales to the Lake District, and do Scaffeld Pike on Saturday. Bear in mind they are on motorbikes, so not sharing driving. Saturday evening come down from Scaffeld Pike and drive to Ben Nevis and head up.

Is this not madness? Confused

3littlefrogs · 01/05/2014 18:35

I agree, he is bonkers. He should be resting, keeping warm and drinking lots of fluids so that his body can recuperate.

He will get ill again and possibly be worse.

He is even more bonkers thinking that the lower oxygen level up a mountain will not be a big problem for someone whose lungs have been infected.

FunkyBoldRibena · 01/05/2014 18:37

Completely.

AlpacaLypse · 01/05/2014 18:40

Snowdon is do-able in an afternoon stroll sort of way but the other two are real proper mountains.

He's bonkers.

Sugar in the petrol tank? Get your 18 month old to post the bike keys under the floor boards?

AlpacaLypse · 01/05/2014 18:41

Sorry, just saw it was friend with 18 month old.

It'll have to be the sugar in the fuel tank.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 01/05/2014 18:45

Goodness me - this is supposed to be fun???

Suebedo · 01/05/2014 19:05

When we climbed Snowdon doing the 3 peaks in late June, the rain was horizontal at the top. Ok he's giving himself more than 24 hrs but it doesn't sound like he'll have time for much sleep and the walking in itself was knackering. And when I got a chest infection, my GP said I had a fair chance of getting another shortly thereafter, which I did despite 'behaving'. Can he do it with a different friend another time?

FayeKorgasm · 01/05/2014 19:06

He is being daft. He is risking a relapse which could end up as pneumonia if he doesn't take things easy after a chest infection.

I don't blame you for being worried.

TiggyD · 01/05/2014 19:06

Man-flu eh?

HicDraconis · 01/05/2014 19:10

As a guide, when people turn up for surgery in the same situation (chest infection, on antibiotics, still coughing) I cancel them and make them wait 6 weeks before rebooking. It takes that long for the lungs to get back to normal after infection. Your husband is obviously keen to do this but he should leave it a month.

HauntedNoddyCar · 01/05/2014 19:13

So climbing Snowden in the dark after a days work and riding a bike from London to N Wales? Then riding in the dark to the Lake District the same night?

Even without the illness that sounds daft and that final leg doesn't sound safe.

clam · 01/05/2014 19:24

I wouldn't worry - the chances of him getting anywhere near Snowdon from London on the Friday of a Bank Holiday weekend are pretty remote.

FrankelandFilly · 01/05/2014 19:28

DH did the three peaks with his brother a few years ago. They're both fit (military) but it knackered them. If you're doing the challenge then Snowdon is the easiest to climb in the dark, but that's all irrelevant if he's recovering from a chest infection.

Fathertedfan · 01/05/2014 19:30

Yes. He's a gold plated idiot of he goes and isn't 100percent well

HauntedNoddyCar · 01/05/2014 19:32

Clam in a car I'd agree but onbikes they should do it.
