To think I'm going to be hot in a Muslim country

Reading some reports by journos about what to wear in Marrakesh, and it looks like covered up shoulders, knees, no cleavage etc is the order of the day. It's about 32 degrees there today and I ned to pack for our flight tonight. I'm loath to put a load of trousers an long tops in though; I don't really have lightweight versions, so what I have is warm weather stuff. I know I can but a few long skirts there maybe, but is it really necessary to leave mini skirts behind?

Longish shorts you can normally get away with. I live in cropped chinos and light tshirts. Leggings under dresses are an easy way to cover knees.

I've never been to Marrakesh but live in a Muslim country.

No mini skirts here unless it's in an international hotel chain, (restaurants/bars are there), then you can wear what you like. Just not worth it when wandering around though.

Where are you going specifically.

if it's sunny and 32 degrees you should cover up - you will burn

wear a t-shirt and shorts - no problem

Maybe you should have planned better?

Long, loose clothes will keep you much cooler than a mini skirt and a vest top.

We're staying in a smallish riad near the centre of the Medina.

You can wear what you please but you probably will get stared at if you are all boob tubes and hot pants.

Riad in the Medina and I would be a little more discreet. In one of the new hotels in the new area wear what you please?

You left it a bit late to realise though! Linen long stuff would have been perfect and is so much more comfortable in the heat than tight clingy stuff.

Why are you going to a country you are unprepared for?

YABU, I went to India (45 degrees!) a couple of years ago and found I was much cooler in long floaty skirts than shorts.

Even putting on a cardi to visit temples etc wasn't actually as bad as I expected it to be.

I found that you get to a certain point of being hot and uncomfortable and just stay there IFSWIM? It's not a linear progression to boiling alive

In the hotel and on the beach wear what you like.
But off the beach in and town you should cover up.
It's not difficult really.
Also you will get burnt in a mini skirt and a vest top.

I would have felt really impolite/ down right rude wearing a mini skirt in Marrakesh. I wore maxi skirts and tshirts/ long sleeve linen tshirts.

I did realise, but just didn't want to spend out on clothes I wouldn't have worn again as I've spend a lot this month (on a handbag that isn't coming). Bit of a last minute trip too.

No need to totally cover up, but not too much boob or thighs. Linen shirts, trousers will protect you from the sun and keep you cool.

You've left it a bit late for shopping but maybe you could pick a few things up at the airport.

Oh and clothes are dirt cheap in the medina. I'd go out and invest in a few lovely salwar (long cotton trousers and dresses)

No need to cover from head to foot and be hot. Knee length skirts / calf length cropped trousers and t-shirts are fine. Floaty long sleeved cotton top even better.
Yes in theory you can wear what you want but seeing tourists in shorts and strap tops wandering around the souks is pretty distasteful when you know what offence this can cause. Please leave your mini-skirts behind.

I've always found loose fitting linen trousers and long tops are much more practical for hot countries. No need to worry about sunburn either. A handy thing is a linen shrug, which can be thrown over a vest top if you need to covet up. If you are going for an actual sun holiday, presumably you can wear shorts, bikini etc in the hotel/pool complex? For me part of travelling is being able to blend in and not stick out like a sore thumb so I would try not to cause offence. Its not just a muslim country thing either. If you've ever visited churches in for example Rome, its a sign of respect to have your shoulders covered inside.

They will be an Acessorize at the airport, and they will do some lightweight, cottony, sleeved tunicy things.

Sigh, ok time to strew the bed everything I own.

But Marrakesh is a big place, my SIL have been to a lot of places and was going to text her.
