To think I'm going to be hot in a Muslim country

Reading some reports by journos about what to wear in Marrakesh, and it looks like covered up shoulders, knees, no cleavage etc is the order of the day. It's about 32 degrees there today and I ned to pack for our flight tonight. I'm loath to put a load of trousers an long tops in though; I don't really have lightweight versions, so what I have is warm weather stuff. I know I can but a few long skirts there maybe, but is it really necessary to leave mini skirts behind?

Floaty cotton skirts/floaty cotton tunics are v.cheap in the markets. Cooler NOT to have your limbs uncovered in intense heat. More respectful too in a v.religious country.

i was given a huge tablecloth gown to wear at a visit to a temple in Turkey recently. Even though my knees and arms were already covered. I was happy to oblige.

Oriunda · 13/04/2014 18:29

I would definitely leave miniskirts at home and can't believe you really need to ask. You will draw attention to yourself and not in a good way. We stayed in a riad and I wore linen trousers and long sleeved tops. Accessorize at the airport will have everything you need.

fluffyraggies · 13/04/2014 18:30

Not Turkey - Tunisia.

BuzzardBird · 13/04/2014 18:31

Ha, I thought this was a wind up! Just be respectful Op. Wear what you want but don't be surprised if you get unwanted attention.

SleepySuitcaseSheepie · 13/04/2014 18:33

You can wear what you want in the souks but be prepared to be grabbed/stared at/men trying to buy you if you have boobs/legs showing!

I won't advise it at night as I felt it was "more rough"

I went last year after having no time to shop as my sister was in hospital so I was staying with her constantly - very very ill - so I did have a few dressss which I wouldn't of worn normally but they were actually fine - minus the men staring.

If you going with a friend/partner - stay close together and if with partner if you hold hands you attract less attention

Have a wonderful time - am rather jealous!

softlysoftly · 13/04/2014 18:33

Honestly jump just take a few things and go shopping there

Goblinchild · 13/04/2014 18:34

Or stay by the pool in the hotel.

RoseHoney · 13/04/2014 18:56

Can you not just wear maxi dresses and take some cardigans to wear over the top??

JumpRope · 13/04/2014 19:03

Thinking accessorise isn't going to be open at 5 am .... We are always so late anyway I won't have time for a cup of tea at the airport. Think I'm sorted now with some cotton trousers and scarfs for shoulders.

I think you should respect the way of life in the country you are visiting! I've travelled in India, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos - all hotter than the temperatures you've mentioned at the time when I was there - and was perfectly fine in linen trousers, t-shirts, and long skirts. You soon adjust. Maybe read up a bit sooner next time?

ProfondoRosso · 13/04/2014 19:22

When I was in Egypt, I found long skirts and loose floaty tops far cooler than having my limbs exposed. In any case, whatever country you go to, it's good to have an idea of local customs as a courtesy to local people but also to ensure you have a good time. Drawing lots of attention to yourself in skimpy clothes would just make you miserable, honestly.

selsigfach · 13/04/2014 20:35

I got loads of hassle in Marrakesh whilst wearing long sleeved linen tops and loose 3/4 yoga pants, I dread to think what it would have been like if I was in a vest and hotpants, like some silly girls I saw. If you dress like you're clubbing in Ibiza, you'll be miserable and get nothing out of what should be an amazing trip. Please leave your vests at home.

Marrakesh was pretty full on, I much preferred Essouira and the surfing areas around Agadir.

Saurus72 · 13/04/2014 21:19

To be honest, although you are unlikely to be stoned in the street for wearing more revealing clothes, I think you will regret it because you will feel so self conscious and uncomfortable. When I went, I wore maxi dresses with a 3 quarter sleeve cardi, plus a scarf most of the time to cover up my cleavage area. The riad in Marrakech is quite an intense experience, and you will be hassled not matter what, so why make yourself even more of a target? Outside of the riad, in the more modern neighbourhoods, it is more relaxed, but I still wouldn't wear a mini skirt.

Saurus72 · 13/04/2014 21:25

selsigfach I much preferred Essaouira too. We were in Marrakech for 4-5 days first, and I think it's pretty much the only place we have ever been that I didn't enjoy. The riad was beautiful, but the constant hassle in the medina was horrible. Outside of the medina was better from a hassle point of view, but just wasn't very interesting - loved the Marjorelle gardens and we also discovered a lovely contemporary restaurant called Kechmara that we went to twice. We were very glad when it was time to get on the bus to Essaouira, much more chilled!

mycatlikestwiglets · 13/04/2014 21:37

I've been to Marrakech a couple of times and have worn long shorts or maxi dresses without standing out. I'd avoid shoe string straps or very short shorts/skirts but you can dress reasonably appropriately for the weather - Marrakech is very cosmopolitan. I had my bum pinched in the Place Jemaa El Fna though

QueenCadbury · 13/04/2014 21:39

You can wear what you want but just be prepared for hassle if you've got your shoulders/cleavage showing. Also 32 there feels much hotter than here as the sun seems so much stronger so you are likely to burn very easily so you'd be better covered up anyway. You could always wear your vests but just buy a scarf to sling over your shoulders and protect you from the sun.

softlysoftly · 13/04/2014 21:44

Oh I loved Essaouira!

BethCalavicci · 13/04/2014 21:51

I think it's downright rude and disrespectful to parade around in shorts/hot pants/boob/tube/whatever in a Muslim country.
Seriously, how hard is it to cover up? Floaty maxi skirts down to the ankle and long sleeved, loose fitting cotton tops.
Just as cool as letting it all hang out.
(No, I'm not Muslim before anyone asks.)
I'm all about respecting the culture of the country we are in though. Same goes for anyone in England disrespecting our beliefs.

JulietBravoJuliet · 13/04/2014 22:06

I personally wouldn't be caught dead in a mini skirt, shorts or a vest top, as I have serious body issues, and I've coped well in heats of 30+ over the years. I tend to wear floaty maxi dresses and shrugs, or linen trousers and loose tops throughout the summer and I don't feel I've missed out on sunburnt limbs!
