To raise an entirely appropriate Brew to the memory of this man.

A superior shocialist, as Peter Tinniswood (of blessed memory) styled him.

I saw him speak at a political conference when I was sixteen, he captivated the audience and spoke from his heart rather than the usual regurgitation of party policy that most politicians sprout.

RIP.

He seemed a kind and gentle man. RIP.

motown3000 · 14/03/2014 13:43

A "Brilliant" and Caring Person who wanted the best for everybody in Society . However I think he talked and espoused " Rubbish" and lived in a "Alice In Wonderland" world.

LadyBeagleEyes · 14/03/2014 13:43

I wondered when Margaret Thatcher would be mentioned. Just like the Bob Crowe threads.

Paleodad · 14/03/2014 13:51

I've said this on one of the other threads, but it bears repeating.
What's so "Rubbish" or "Alice in Wonderland" about belief in democracy, equal rights, people before profit, equal access to health care, political integrity, etc. etc.
You don't have to have agree with everything he ever said to recognise that he made valid political arguments that were certainly not rubbish.

CharityCase · 14/03/2014 13:55

Didn't agree with him but that's irrelevant. We need more politicians like him- people prepared to say what they think rather than what will get them elected.

Also, never going to forget him dressing down Ali G

' respect to the Benn'

motown3000 · 14/03/2014 14:06

The reason I said he was a "Brilliant" and Caring person is because he did want the best for society. The problem for him ( Despite probably being one of the best speakers in the history of Parliament) . His Ideas could not work in the non Socialised "World" that we live in.

I would say though , that it would have been a "Great" pleasure to hear such a "Brilliant" Man speak with such Passion and feeling and clarity , even though not agreeing with him.

One of the few politicians who inspires me to be a better person. Wish there were a few more like you- or better still, a lot more. RIP a great and a good man.
