Omg it's mostly adverts for ridiculously expensive stuff on models with no boobs.

Grrrr so if you buy this, you're buying a book of adverts.

YABU - Elle is a fashion magazine, what did you expect? Your comment about the models having 'no boobs' is a bit unpleasant. Models are long and lean to showcase the clothes and slim women tend to have small chests. That does not mean they have no boobs.

Ok sorry very small boobs.

I know it's a fashion magazine but over half the pages are adverts rather than written articles iykwim?

I realised how much my life had changed when I bought a magazine similar to Elle about 3 months after my DS was born. I had an appointment that I knew I'd have to wait for, DS being a sleepy baby would have stayed asleep and I was looking forward to a coffee and a read. What actually happened was that I got to about page 4, started to feel fat and frumpy and then descended into a state of feeling very low about myself. I realised that my body would never be the same, I felt ginormous compared to the models and I realised I'd never be able to splurge on handbags again.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that magazines have their place, otherwise they wouldn't have been around for so long. However, the appreciation depends on your current situation. I could sit for hours reading magazines but now they seem like a massive waste of time.

Does anyone remember the original 'She' magazine when it was a larger than average mag and had genuinely interesting articles on women from history, science articles, gardening, crafts, food and short stories (well written) as well as 'handbags and shoes' stuff. It was the only magazine like it and then it.....changed to become a clone of all the others.

Totally get you pans.it's my hubby's turn to get up with the kids so I'm in bed "enjoying " a magazine. I read cosmo or.company or even take a.break etc but this.one is stuffed with.ads. Even pre dc I wouldn't spend hundred.pounds.on one item of clothes

Do you think there will a time when all magazines are e-reader/digital and we can put in our own body measurements and the CGI will show the models as our size in the adverts so we can see what the clothes would actually look like on us?

I thought i was the only one that didnt get magazines. Hello and like pretty people with pretty children in pretty houses saying how happy they are but split up the next week. Elle etc adverts of items i wouldnt buy. Only one i do like is womans weekly and im in my 30s re the craft bits you can make. When i was a teenager i remember them being better than that! Now if waiting i prefer to people watch or just day dream.

I bought Elle a few months ago (cannot remember which issue but I'm sure there was a free gift incentive )

The first 20+ pages were adverts . But I had to scrutinise to see what they were advertising. There was a model, some nice things and a brand name. Obviously I'm not "in" because I had no idea that Brand X = watches, Brand Y - perfume

An old Harpers & Bazaar (at the GP surgery , I don't buy it) I thought "Feck me those models are ugly "
It was like they'd taken some models, cut their hair with a scythe, thrown make-up on them and made them pull the most ridiculous faces. That does not sell clothes to me.

And as a rant ; Cara Delevinge - stop making those stupid tongue out , cross eyed fright faces when someone takes a photo of you.

I do remember buying Elle when there was an article about Sasha Grey.
The arguements on MN were far, far more interesting than the article

This is why I don't buy magazines of any kind. The amount of money in the industry is scary and the whole perception that 'skinny' = happy annoys me, as much as writing an "article" on so called 'fat' celebrities who have gone from a size 10 to a size 14....oh my god call the police.

i read somewhere that around 90% of women felt worse about themselves after reading magazines that are targeted at women, marie clair, elle and so on

such mixed messages one page article be happy with yourself and your wobbly bits a few pages on we can not all be perfect like ......

i realised it is true i never read them now or occasionally flick through the fashion prefer to read my mums intellectual magazines, take a break and chat

I flicked through one once in a waiting room and found nothing of interest. It's a lot of money to pay for a book of glossy ads pushing rubbish that no real woman needs.

I remember the old "She" magazine. Mum used to buy it years ago, and I'd nick it off her when she'd finished reading it.

This was when I was about 18 more than 25 years ago, now but mum stopped buying it many years ago because it was changing too much.

If I need to read a magazine at the hairdressers I make a beeline for a high end man's mag like GQ! OK it has sexist bits in it and bits that aren't really relevant to women but it also tends to have some excellent articles written by good writers, stuff like interviews with authors or musicians, political commentary etc. Yes it has pages and pages of adverts, but nothing like the proportion that high end mags for women have.

I suggest these magazines should collectively be known as "ads and fads mags"

We get similar magazines free at work. 400 pages - 190 pages of adverts, 200 pages outrageously priced 'fashion & beauty' (only £250 for this dahling chi-chi little pair of socks!!!!), 9 pages of women having utter crises because Jacasta refuses to do ballet & won't eat hummus and a page of horoscopes. And DH wonders why I never buy women's magazines.

Stealth - good call. The newsagents could group them into 'ads & fads', 'misery porn' & 'what we think older people like but haven't actually asked them or moved out of the 1950s'.

Apart from the fact they make you feel crap (fat, poor and ugly) they are so fricking expensive. IIRC about £4 - nearly the price of a book. And, at least with a book there is actually something to read not just page upon page of adverts.

Elle is a magazine about beauty and fashion isn't it what were you expecting why did you read it (or look at the pictures) did you not know it was about beauty and fashion. I always read it in the dentist and am AMAZED at how much face cream costs
