'Spoiled' teen or abusive parents?

Daily Mail link below about a US teen suing her parents to pay for her to go to University after they cut her off due to not liking her boyfriend.

If what she is saying is true I thoroughly agree with her claim.

The DM comments section has got my blood boiling and I think the judge is an absolute arse.

child support? Are you not an adult at 18 in america? Are parents legally obliged to pay for university tuition and support while at university?
If the school has an unpaid bill that is legally the parents' responsibility, then should the school not sue the parents?

I don't see why they would stop paying her school fees so close to the end of her time there, but then I ultimately don't think she will be successful.

She is 18, able to get a job and get loans and grants for Uni tuition in her own right, join the Forces to get free training, and finish high school at a public school.

She stomped out and had a hissy, and her mate's lawyer parents smell publicity. Her folks are right. She needs to stop playing truant and turning up to class drunk, lose the loser boyfriend and get her head on straight.

She wants them to hand her money. An 18-year-old who wants to live on her own according to her own rules can do that on her own money.

Having seen some of the evidence presented to the court in various medias, this is a spurious lawsuit and the girl's lawyer should be fined for bringing it.

You live at home, you do so to your parents rules. The rules she was objecting too by the way are reported to be

not staying out all night
not attending school drunk
not calling her mother a cunt and threatening to smear shit on her face.

Not the most outlandish of rules really.

We can't possibly, possibly comment in any meaningful way.

Nor can the judge really.

We just don't know where the truth lies.

On face value she's a 'vile brat' but if true that her parents put her down about her weight and were neglectful and father got her drunk etc etc, then she's damaged not vile.

"If what she is saying is true" - well, that's always the question though, isn't it? If the story is given from her point of view, then it may be her particular view of things, without giving a complete and unbiased view.

The judge has already stated it doesn't look good for her.

I think it could be a bit of both. I think the girl is spoiled, I think the family she's moved in with should have tried to facilitate a reconciliation between parents and daughter rather than support this court case but I do think the parents, especially the dad, sound controlling. Yes, she's 18 now but presumably she's in her final year of high school before university. He should have paid the fees to the end of school and also offered the family she's moved in with some board money. University she's then on her own and he could wash his hands of her. It's not her fault that she's already turned 18 in the last high school year, rather than still being 17. Both sides need to compromise.

Sounds like a brat. Have to agree with the judge. As the judge says, where does it end? At 18 she can obey the rules of where she lives or look after herself.

Applying for US uni you have to put your parents income info and they have to agree to pay their "share" of costs on the paperwork, even if she didn't live with them she wouldn't get loans and grants to cover anything at all without all her parents income info and tax information. Its pretty strange seeing that at 18 you are supposed to be an adult.
My oldest son needed us to fill out financial paperwork each year for his grants and loans. Total cost for 4 years before any help was $120,000 thank goodness he was a good student and got a lot of financial help.

I read online a chain of emails between daughter and dad. Daughter's were like "can I come home now?" And dad sent a long reasoned response saying she was welcome back as long as she respected her mother and didn't see boyfriend. It was very clear and reasonable. Daughter's email response was rude and childish IIRC.

They should pay her school tuition fees to enable her to graduate high school. After that, she can make her own way in the world.

She is clearly one gobby little madam, but despite the rather obvious hatchet job in the papers, and her damning herself out of her own mouth emails, I still ain't buying what the parents are selling. At least, not entirely.

She claimed her father was inappropriate with her by kissing her on the cheek, giving her alcohol at a party, and saying 'you are more than just a daughter to me'.

A horrible insinuation if nothing was intended by her fathers actions. Can't see any way back from that in the future.

She said she doesn't want a relationship with her parents but only their money.

Maybe her parents are hideously abusive but why would she then want their money? Most people have more pride than that.

Toad, yes, we use the 'c-word', but it is considered a vile insult. It's usually only directed at women & is about the worse thing you could call one. Most of us wouldn't use it unless pushed to the very limits of our tolerance.

In the coverage of this case that I've seen it appears to be a case of a spoiled child and surprised parents. It looks like she was pretty indulged by her parents to begin with and never learned limits. She's now gone off the rails and her 'completely shocked' parents then put the hammer down hard, after years of indulging her. I'm sure the whole debacle was a real surprise to all of them! (sarcasm)

Add to this a shark of a lawyer and you have a perfect witches brew. Her case has no merits. She won't collect a thing, but her parents might be ordered to pay the back-owed school tuition. To award her anything would set a legal precedent that would be a nightmare for any parent with a rebellious child.
