I have opened a business that is in a complex of shops like a small arcade, there is a beauty business upstairs and a clothes shop, the clothes shop previously occupied the space we have rented, when we took out the lease the shop upstairs was given permission from the land lord to place a large sign for her shop on my window.

I said this would be fine for a few days and I then returned it too her as I was painting facias etc. The sign reappeared no more than five or six times after, even after I has asked another member of staff to keep it, this came to a head last Saturday when my hubby returned it and told her in a firm manner (not shouting I was there) not to place it back. Then she told us we where the reason she was quiet as while we have been doing the shop fit, she the moved the sign which kept falling off so I asked for more fixings so it would keep up. She scowled and stomped around while she put it back up.

Since then she moaned to the land lord who seems to think that we should appologise etc (so theres no tension), making us look bad. She has given us attitude all week too.

Tbh I dont need the stress, would you applogise even when you feel you dont have too just to keep the peace, or ignore her as I dont need To deal with her day to day.

If your landlord said it was ok to have the sign up then you should apologise for trying to remove it.

Tell her to stick her poster where the sun don't appear and then draw something very very unreasonable on her poster

Or you could just keep the peace and apologise, however boring that may be...

If you are not in direct competition then is is in both of your interests to be as busy as possible. I would apologise.

The landlord told us that this was temporary option for her but didnt say how long for. As was allowed so the front of the building where we are doesn't look empty.

They dont pay our rent etc. The windows etc are our responsibility in our lease etc.

They have no legal wright to do this.

To paint the windows as we where about to open.

Other than that, I don't understand the OP. . Did you agree with the landlord to keeping the sign up on the sole condition it was only for a few days?

I remove it (several times)

Girl gets stroppy over sign, blames me for her being quiet.

Try to be nice.

She is still stroppy and gives attitude for more than a week.

Different businesses, not in competition only in location in the building.

She does not own businesses just work there, hense shop girl (hence the nane) And she isnt young either.

I would have thought it would be in your interests to retain the sign. That way you will avoid a lot of enquiries from customers of her shop wondering where it's gone.

Landlord had agreed to the sign being there. You shouldn't have moved it.

Surely it's not hard and helps support a fellow small business?

You missed out the bit where the landlord gave permission for her to put the sign in the window.

I think you are mean and U. I don't see why having a sign in your window before you have opened your shop should be an issue at all. You have now created a bad atmosphere with a neighbour over something very petty.

What is the issue with keeping the sign up? As others have said it might generate more footfall for you too, plus you may need a favour from them one day!

The most important thing here is : is a condition of your lease that her sign is in your window? Or did you agree this in writing/how long for.

If its not in your lease you can refuse/ if it is you have made an error of judgement as in, why would you do that?

This is about business & contract not everyone going off in a strop

The sign was huge, trying to establish myself and get things started. Its moved now, but still getting attitude over it.

How do you paint with it still there, then I was due to open?

Would you open with a big sign over you main window?

Oh well then if she doesn't own the business and is only a shop girl, she should have been doffing her cap to you and tugging her forlock to you for even deigning to talk to her!

I tell you what though - that shop will have its regulars, they WILL tell their customers that you were unreasonable an shitty - it WILL affect your business.

Is the sign supposed to be a permanent fixture once you've finished painting the fascias?

I think all three parties need to sit down and politely discuss how to sort this out so everyone's happy. I can see why she'd be cross if she thought it had been agreed that her sign would be in the window until it can be put back outside (if that's the case).
