what you did in your day that would have got you sacked from MN today and potentially a visit from ss

I slept on my tummy, mother smoked when pregnant. .. and my nan thinks asprin is the best thing to give a baby for teething. And rice in my bottle from probably day one to get me off to sleep

I'm not an older mum but I co-slept with my DD.

Also what guidelines do you think are ridiculous and likely to be changed in 10 years?

My HV told me to feed my (fully bf) son every 4 hours. I was young and naive and I did what I was told. Looking back - I cringe, poor kid.... he spent 3 hours out of 4 yelling for food and I thought he was being unreasonable and fussy. I also started him on solids at 3 months. Everyone did.

I co-slept with dc2, never planned on it (he just wouldnt leave my boob alone) and i needed sleep

Yeah, I think that was standard everywhere, I was on baby food then

I would tell you......but I don't want a flaming. MNers are incapable of realising that "things were different then" and judge everything by today's standards

My mum told me she bf my little brother every 3 hours rather than the prescribed 4. She knew this was right but still felt she was breaking "the rules" She was advised she should make him wait the full 4 hours.
She also "let" me and db drop our 10pm feed, meaning she had to get up at 2am as that was when we woke for milk. She said she just went to bed at 8pm herself to get a good chunk of sleep.
I am not close to my mum, but I am pleased she broke the rules of the day.

My mum put Nivea cream on us when out in the sun, not sun cream. We all had awful sunburn every year.

My dh was weaned on the usual rusk, weetabix etc (late 60s) at 12 weeks I think. he is coeliac. Not mil's fault though.

Puppy when i was little I think my parents regarded "sun tan lotion" (we now know it as sun screen) as a luxury cosmetic item.

I was born in 1977. My mum put me into a cot and in my own room on day one.

She stopped bf'ing at four weeks on HV's advice, as milk was deemed "too watery and low in quality".

I was left in my pram at the bottom of the garden for four hours every afternoon.

Weaned onto solids at 3.5 months.

I don't think I was even aware there was such a thing as sun cream until I was in my teens.

We went out without sunscreen (had it even been invented in the 70s?) and spent most of the summer picking at blistered skin

I ate chewing gum off the street (I do boak at that a little now..) and survived to tell the tale

We used to play dare in the street - which involved lying down in the middle of the road and making the cars stop

We went on car journeys with no car seats in the back, surrounded by a fug of ciggie smoke

We were smacked by our parents

We were weaned at 3 days old (OK, slight exaggeration, but not much)

We sat next to electric bar heaters in our nylon nighties

My toes curl when I look back at some of the things my parents/we did in my childhood

Dh's was diagnosed as a young toddler, all his hair fell out!
There was a lot of misunderstanding about breast milk in the 60s/70s I think.
Mil had great issue/anger that I wantd to bf and was able to. She was really upset that it meant she couldn't give the dgc a bottle.

Oh yes, nylon nighties!

Depending on what you read, sunscreen was first available in the late 60s...don't think it was widely used until years after that.
I remember babies having large frilly sunhats!

Baby pics of me (maybe 4 months old?) In a bikini rockin a baby tan... Next to mum looking enviable for someone 4 months post partum covered in Hawaiian Tropic and or babyoil. And this was not England. Hot climate

I breastfed my DC's on demand but they were in their own room from 3 weeks, slept on their backs. Didn't cut out much apart from alcohol when pregnant. I weaned at four months onto fruit and veg and baby porridge, no wheat until six months I seem to remember, may have been 9 months. They had some jars, some homemade. I smacked occasionally. DC's are 22, 20 and 17 and seem to be fine.

First solids in bottle from about 6 weeks. Always put to sleep on tummy. A teaspoon of sweet sherry in bottle for colic. Bottle feeding recommended because you could see how much baby had eaten

My brother and I often travelled in the car boot.

Ironically, this was because of the massive amount of space our little sister's car seat took up!

It was 8 years ago so not sure if post or pre e number smarties. I know it wasnt a blue one

OH I remember the horrible pajamas... Was there a ban on natural fibres in the 70s and 80s or what?
