Bottled water...Seriously Mother?

My Mother is coming to stay with us on Sunday well she was

anyway somewhere, somehow , she has it in her head that she can only drink bottled water.

This is despite having a water filter. This is despite us having just bought one for her visit!

When I lived in London, it was a must (for us) it did improve the flavour and after seeing the crud floating in the top (of the filter) it made sense.

Where we live in the Country our water is really nice, I've been 'lazy' about using one here.

My Mother likes having masses of these blasted bottles in the kitchen, just for drinking The filter is fine for tea/coffee.

Now, I forgot this silly rule that she binds all her visits with. I innocently thought the filter would work... for all water needs

Apparently not, as you have guessed it, she still wants a collection of Tesco value water all over the place

mother also claims a Doctor no less has told here to use it!

If you look on the label of the supermarket value stuff, most of it says "bottled at source in HD8, West Yorkshire". There may also be allusion to "Pennine Hills".

Anyway, this source is a borehole about 2 miles away from here. Maybe closer. Same aquifer as my tap water comes from anyway. So yes, it is just bottled tap water. But nice tap water!

I live in London and drink out the tap. I'm still pretty much healthy :). My gp's live in the north east and tell me it's filthy compared to theirs

Fem, I'm afraid I will be your mother one day. I live of bottled water and can't stand the taste of tap water. Filtered water tastes ok but you have to keep drinking it in cups . T'is too much effort, I prefer frequent big swigs from a bottle. Not quite the classy image I dream of but hey...

It has never done us any harm, and both my babies were ff. it tastes lovely from our taps. And is very, very soft (I havn't descaled a kettle in the 13 years we have lived here). I work in the water industry, there is no "unsafe" public water supply in the UK. Your mother is nuts .

Tesco value water is tap water, so just watch her drink it and inwardly chuckle to yourself.

To be honest, I think even filters are unnecessary and cause massive amounts of waste. Daft.

I only drink bottled water, it really doesn't cost that much and you definitely taste the difference.

I also only drink bottled water, I prefer the taste. Yes, water has different tastes. However, I wouldn't impose my preferences on hosts and will either buy it myself or suck it up for a few days.

I only drink bottled water but that is because I prefer sparkling and it doesn't come out of the tap that way! I worry about the chemicals in the plastic a bit but figure something has to kill me in the end! In our (London) tap water, I can taste chlorine. Yuk.

Certain brands of bottled water are dangerous for babies, because of the high mineral content, IIRC. Google that, and tell her!

I dont know I suppose it depends where you live and what she is used to. where we live the stuff that comes out of the taps is the same stuff 'bottled at source' a miles away and sold for extortionate prices, but when we go back to london (which used to taste just normal to me) we were spitting out the stuff in disgust and buying bottled water.....

Had lovely tap water in Gateshead.
It's vile here, and too cold to drink straight from the tap in winter. I have bottle water just for drinking, except for a short spell in summer when it's less cold and doesn't smell as bad.

You need to be really careful about water which has been sitting around in plastic bottles, especially in the warmth, though I expect everyone knows that already.

Granted tap water doesn't come out tasting like Badoit, sadly.

It's the waste which bothers me mainly.

Spring water is just glorified tap water. Natural mineral water is different, and shouldn't have any additives. I'm allergic to chlorine so I've spent much of my adult life buying natural mineral water. I can't afford that any more

Your mother is being a bit precious, but why but just buy a few of those large bottles of mineral water? It's a waste of money and kitchen space (and plastic), but if it keeps her happy...

wow, some of you lot should spend time in countries where you can't drink out of the tap. I still think this is an everyday miracle.

not all UK tap water tastes the same, but chilled it is always fine. Or add a bit of squash.

Sorry op I'm on your mothers side here I only drink bottled water I have 4 small bottles a day I hate drinking it out of cups and the taste of tap water my mum just brought a water filter but it's just not the same! So I take my own bottles with me when I visit!

I dont see the big deal if she is buying it herself. I wouldnt be buying it for her.

YADNBU. Quite apart from the question of whether or not it's healthy, bottled water produces an obscene amount of plastic waste. It can't all be recycled into fleeces

I actually think you are being unreasonable Op. So what if your mum only drinks bottled water. It hardly makes a difference to you.

Just go buy her a few value bottles and let her get on with it. She won't be visiting forever.

Bottled water has been hailed the biggest gimmick ever! Not only is it utterly pointless but it produced masses and masses of waste. Tell your mum to get a grip! And be grateful she has water direct to her home.
