Bottled water...Seriously Mother?

My Mother is coming to stay with us on Sunday well she was Wink

anyway somewhere, somehow , she has it in her head that she can only drink bottled water.

This is despite having a water filter. This is despite us having just bought one for her visit!

When I lived in London, it was a must (for us) it did improve the flavour and after seeing the crud floating in the top (of the filter) it made sense.

Where we live in the Country our water is really nice, I've been 'lazy' about using one here.

My Mother likes having masses of these blasted bottles in the kitchen, just for drinking The filter is fine for tea/coffee.

Now, I forgot this silly rule that she binds all her visits with. I innocently thought the filter would work... for all water needs

Apparently not, as you have guessed it, she still wants a collection of Tesco value water all over the place

I'm not unreasonable am I? Its just bottled tap water right?

mother also claims a Doctor no less has told here to use it!

I know, it is a very boring question...I'm yawning as I type...however what is the opinion on MN please.

Mum has just slammed the phone down on me! Grin

After a typical " If you needed something I'd get it for you" poor me speech!

I would fill up a load of water bottles from the tap and be done with it. Grin

Incidentally, when my DC's were young, a friend of mine only gave her DD bottled water. Ever.
The DD ended up with awful teeth because she had never drunk from the tap. The dentist told her that it was down to bottled water.

Naoko · 11/01/2014 13:01

That did sound stupid didn't it :o It's just that I've never lived anywhere else where the water tastes so obviously of chlorine, and I've never been under a boil water notice for 3 months because the water was contaminated anywhere else either (and the chlorine predates that). So clearly it's possible to have safe water without making it taste disgusting, and I don't know wtf is going on where I live.

BrownSauceSandwich · 11/01/2014 13:12

Fair enough Wink. It always amazes me how different tap water is around the country. Here in the northwest, ours is perfectly drinkable, and the sodastream sorts out the lack of fizz. But I will admit to drinking liberal quantities of bottled fizzy water when I stay in London for work.

hackmum · 11/01/2014 13:15

Well, on the one hand your mum is BU to only drink bottled water. On the other hand, you are BU not to buy it for her.

We all have our funny little ways and we become more fussy as you get older. One day you'll be making unreasonable demands of your own children. A bit of give and take won't harm you.

mrsjay · 11/01/2014 13:24

I once saw in a supermarket in wales their bottled water came from the same resevoir my tap water comes from Shock anyway just let her bring her bottled water or buy a big bottle for her indulge her quirk

OMG.

Can't believe how many of you only drink water from plastic. Think of the environment if nothing else.

COI: drink tap water in London.

wobblyweebles · 11/01/2014 15:28

Incidentally, when my DC's were young, a friend of mine only gave her DD bottled water. Ever. The DD ended up with awful teeth because she had never drunk from the tap. The dentist told her that it was down to bottled water

Why on earth would it be down to bottled water?

EyesCrossedLegsAkimbo · 11/01/2014 15:58

I don't have mains water, our water comes from a spring. My grown up children don't have a filling between them.

Roussette · 11/01/2014 16:25

wobbly ... because she had never had tap water. Ever. Only bottled water. There's chlorine in tap water. The enamel on her teeth was damaged Smile

diddl · 11/01/2014 16:38

"you get it free from the tap!!"

Lucky you! We have to pay for ours!

wobblyweebles · 11/01/2014 17:14

There is no chlorine in our tap water either.

My children still manage not to have awful teeth.

They brush them.

Hmm phone probs, meant to say no fluoride in our tap water (although we also have no chlorine).

Roussette · 11/01/2014 20:57

Lordy... I put chlorine! I meant flouride! I thought all tap water had it in. Shows what I know! Maybe the girl I knew whose DD had a problem with just drinking bottled, didn't clean her teeth either!

Willdoitinaminute · 12/01/2014 00:49

Sash where do you buy Ben Shaws water from? I really miss Huddersfield tap water.

Willdoitinaminute · 12/01/2014 00:54

If she drank sparkling spring water the poor teeth would be due to the lower pH or if fruit flavour the sugar!

SkinnedAlive · 12/01/2014 01:49

Why don't you compromise and ask her try the filtered water and if she really doesn't like it you can go out and buy some she does like. She my try it and find it ok :) Don't try and trick her by putting filtered water into bottles. She will taste the difference and (rightfully) be really angry at the deception.

I hate the taste of water. I really can't stand it. Occasionally water from a private spring is ok, but I have never tasted chemically treated tap water that I can stand. Most bottled water is horrible too. I always add cordial to tap water, and it is ok that way. I also use tap water for cooking (I don't drink tea/coffee).

The cats om the other hand have bottled water for their water fountain. The tap water in my area is hard so I can't use it in the fountain, so instead use a soft bottled water.

bluesbaby · 12/01/2014 02:24

The docs reckoned hard water may have been part of the cause of kidney stones in our case.

rightsaidfrederick · 12/01/2014 13:10

YANBU

Tap water is perfectly safe unless she has some very rare medical disorder. I also object to the stuff on environmental grounds - not only the plastic, but the fuel involved in transporting stuff around the country / planet. Unless you're out and didn't take anything out with you, the entire concept is bloody bonkers.

I'd be tempted to keep refilling the same water bottle tbh.

MidniteScribbler · 12/01/2014 13:21

She is being silly, but would it really kill you to buy a few bottles of water? Everyone has their little quirks, and if this is her only one, then think yourself lucky.

Feminine · 14/01/2014 10:33

Midnite it is not her only quirk Wink

I bought the water though.

2 bottles...

I am such a wonderful daughter.

well this is a real first world problem for your mother isn't it.

personally I give to water aid to help bring fresh water to the third world.

can't believe anyone buys bottled water. seriously!

Bexicles · 14/01/2014 10:42

YABU. I only drink bottled water, you can buy big 5 litre bottles for not very much. I would buy her some, it's a relatively small ask.
