To not want noisy DIY on NYD

minionmadness · 01/01/2014 14:34

New next door neighbours have decided to do DIY today... fine, except they are using very noisy equipment since around 10am this morning. We are all having a lazy day watching films and all we can hear is the noise from next door.

They are renovating their house which is fair enough, we did when we bought ours. However I just feel that since the DH is not working at the moment, he could at least give us one day free from noise.

I am trying to ignore it as DH saying that we made noise when doing the same, but I have pointed out to him that even though we were both working at the time I would never have done DIY on NYD.

Of course the more I'm trying to ignore it, its all I can hear.

Bastards!

BuffyxSummers · 01/01/2014 14:40

NYD isn't a big deal to everyone. This might be the only day they have off and can do it.

minionmadness · 01/01/2014 14:43

Buffy I have just said that the DH is not working at the moment. So not the only day he has off and his DW has been off since Christmas eve.

We're doing DIY today (and every weekend it seems) - its the only chance we have to get it finished !

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2014 14:44

Yabu - but I do feel your pain.

BuffyxSummers · 01/01/2014 14:44

Sorry, I read it as your dh was off and that's why you wanted the day perfect. But again, NYD is not a big deal to everyone.

IamInvisible · 01/01/2014 14:45

YABU.

Why can't people do DIY when they want to? It's not like it is the middle of the night!

TwerkingNineToFive · 01/01/2014 14:46

They waited till 10am. I think yabu.

Bodypopper · 01/01/2014 14:46

Sympathise but what can you do really. Stuff cotton wool in your ears and put in subtitles for the film. Grin

CustardoPaidforIDSsYFronts · 01/01/2014 14:46

seriously, murder them

NYD is recovery from hangover day everyone knows this

drivingmisslazy · 01/01/2014 14:53

Sorry YABU they waited till 10 am.

Bowlersarm · 01/01/2014 14:54

YABU.

It is exactly the right day to do something at home, such as DIY.

AsBrightAsAJewel · 01/01/2014 15:25

NYD might be one of the few days the neighbours actually get to do the work. You say the DH is not at work, but maybe he needs help with this task and the DW is off work today?

When did you do your DIY when you moved in? Maybe your neighbours groaned at you making noise on a Sunday (special to some) or in the evenings?

Sallyingforth · 01/01/2014 15:35

You are spending a day off doing what you want.
So are they.
YABU.

minionmadness · 01/01/2014 15:50

Sallyingforth Actually we are not because the fucking inconsiderate neighbours have deemed that their needs are more important than ours!

Why don't folk read the OP... The DH is not working and they have been renovating the house for around a month now, so today is not the only day available. They have been working every day over Christmas. I do not take issue but one day is not too much to ask surely.

I accept IABU to some, I guess I am just more considerate than most. When we were doing our renovations, we talked to our neighbours (only 6 houses where we live, rural) and let them know when we were thinking about doing the very noisy stuff. It was certainly appreciated by them and they all rallied round with offers of help.

Doncha just luvvit? Ever stumbled across the term 'self praise is no recommendation' ?

livinginawinterwonderland · 01/01/2014 15:55

YABU. Why should they stop just because it's NYD? Confused

If it's that loud, go round and tell them and ask if they could let you know in future, but there's nothing wrong with doing DIY on a bank holiday.

ComposHat · 01/01/2014 15:55

YABU it was hardly 3am. If you don't want to be awoken from a hangover slumber, don't go out and get pissed the night before. The world doesn't stop because you have a bad head or fancy a kip.

BuffyxSummers · 01/01/2014 15:56

Are your neighbours psychic? Have you told them you want this one day to be quiet? Maybe they have a time scale to be doing it and as you haven't said anything for the past month, their crystal ball isn't working either and they don't realise that you want them to shut up.

Bowlersarm · 01/01/2014 16:00

My YABU still stands.

Why should they have to put their life on hold because you want a lazy day at home and would rather they sit round twiddling their thumbs as well? If I were them, I would be itching to crack on with it as well, and wouldn't be waiting because you want me to.

Especially as they didn't start until after 10am, giving plenty of time for their neighbours to sleep off the night before.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2014 16:02

Now I think yabvu. I did have some sympathy before, but you've lost it. They didn't start until 10 and providing they finish by 7-ish, I honestly think that you'll just have to suck it up.

It's annoying, but getting on your high horse about how much more considerate you are than others isn't going to help.

GlitzAndGiggles · 01/01/2014 16:03

You can't expect them to put their life on hold for your sake. Imo DIY on NYD isn't exactly inconsiderate!

hootloop · 01/01/2014 16:05

We have been doing DIY, it is just the first bank holiday to us one that is always dedicated to the house we try to only do noisy things between 10 and 2 and think that is reasonable.

MaeveBehave · 01/01/2014 16:07

I had a loud job done today (in a terraced house). He didnt start till 11 am tho. It will b finished between 11am and 4 tomorrow BUT THE REASON for this is because the man is between other jobs.
I am not going to feel too apologetic as nobody sleeps past 11 am surely, if so, they'd b glad to be woken.

AsBrightAsAJewel · 01/01/2014 16:07

"we try to only do noisy things between 10 and 2" Grin If only ...

I know you know when the couple have not been at work, but you don't know their other commitments and when they need this DIY finished by, so you can't make assumptions as to when they ought to be doing the work, OP.
