To not want noisy DIY on NYD

minionmadness · 01/01/2014 14:34

New next door neighbours have decided to do DIY today... fine, except they are using very noisy equipment since around 10am this morning. We are all having a lazy day watching films and all we can hear is the noise from next door.

They are renovating their house which is fair enough, we did when we bought ours. However I just feel that since the DH is not working at the moment, he could at least give us one day free from noise.

I am trying to ignore it as DH saying that we made noise when doing the same, but I have pointed out to him that even though we were both working at the time I would never have done DIY on NYD.

Of course the more I'm trying to ignore it, its all I can hear.

Another one in Scotland. Definitely no DIY! Except maybe if you were drilling your own head to alleviate the pressure of your hangover!!!!

(Thankfully, am not including myself in that scenario but I felt a bit aggrieved at having to go to a family dinner at 4pm on NYD; The Sound of Music was starting just as we had to start getting ready. I really wanted to lounge about and watch it! OP, YADNBU!!!!!)

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 02/01/2014 03:47

No one in Scotland would want to do DIY on NYD methinks.

Dh is working today. .2nd..and it feels so wrong.

RockinAroundTheXmasTreeHippy · 02/01/2014 04:35

Err, there's actually council regulations in all areas that say YADNBU

NYD is classed as a Sunday, so noisy works break the no work on Sunday rule

Smoorikins · 02/01/2014 06:01

Umm, I too read the op as your dh wasn't working. Why? Because your op is not clear.

I'm in Scotland and I think YANBU to want a bit of quiet on NYD.

But you are not coming across well on this thread. But I guess as you are one of so few considerate people that makes it ok.

Polynomial · 02/01/2014 09:02

We just moved into a new rented flat. I signed the paperwork - DH went to work on the day of the move (his work colleagues expressed surprise at this!), so NYD lots of unpacking and sorting out still going on.

There are notices up saying the tenants should not park in visitors spaces - he parks in a visitors space.

We need to ask permission to put up pictures. I tell him this - he starts hammering picture hooks in the walls at 9 am in the morning - no permission asked for naturally. What an arse!

Polynomial · 02/01/2014 09:02

9am on NYD I might add!

RabbitPies · 02/01/2014 09:15

I asked various members of my family their opinions.. And a few friends. Yes I have no life, and it wouldn't bother any of them apparently. It's just confirmed what I always thought, that my family and I are weird. Grin

New Year's Eve seems special to me. New Years Day not at all. But if one's neighbours have had to put up with loud parties the evening before, then I think it would be considerate to avoid other particularly noisy activities.

JohnnyBarthes · 02/01/2014 09:16

Noisy DIY at weekends and bank holidays should be in short bursts after 10 at the very earliest. If your neighbours work shifts any reasonable person would take this into account too. In any circumstance, you should talk to them first.

NYD is unforgivable at anytime.

MissDuke · 02/01/2014 09:54

YABU, and I am surprised you cannot see that.

However, weeks on end of noise would make anyone unreasonable! I once went over banging on my neighbours door as I literally couldn't cope anymore, the builder answered and I was nearly in tears, 'please, just give me an hour of peace, please!!' because my baby was ill and needed sleep. I realise now I was being unreasonable, my baby wasn't their problem, and I should have just went to my mums. I was brain dead from the noise and just couldn't think straight.

Anyway, the neighbour approached me the following week to apologise, I was mortified because I knew I was in the wrong.... until they said they had went away for the weekend themselves to escape the noise and hadn't thought about us...

minionmadness · 02/01/2014 10:34

It would seem that even though my new neighbour has been making (very) loud noise every day (including Christmas day) over the Christmas holidays I am somehow the "unseasonable" one.

I'm sorry, but I don't accept that... and it doesn't make me rude if I don't agree, and yes I came to AIBU but on-one convinced me that the neighbours were in the right. Therefor I defended myself.

That said I can now see that my annoyance with the situation probably made me quite short with some posters yesterday, although I think if you read the thread some were very short with me too. That said I do accept that I wound some up with my constant reminder of my consideration for others for which I apologise.

I just find this "lets stick the boot in a bit more" like frothing animals quite distasteful and reading one reply this morning from Compo wishing that the neighbours would play music and fire the power tools up at 7am confirm this. Nice... real nice!

To add that the DW from next door came round just after 9 this morning thanking me for having a word as her DH has apparently been getting a bit obsessed with the house to the exclusion of everything else, but hearing it from someone else has made him realise this. They were supposed to go visit her family over Christmas but he decided the house was more important, but they are now going to go for a few days and asked if we could keep the keys to check the house over whilst they are away.

RockinAroundTheXmasTreeHippy so noisy works break the no work on Sunday rule

Not true.

Local council recommendations are that noisy DIY work should be carried out between 10am and 4pm on a Sunday.

Caitlin17 · 02/01/2014 10:47

Our local Council rules are 7am to 7 pm Monday to Saturday only. Work on a Sunday would merit a complaint to the noise officer. NYD would count as a Sunday.

Actually for many in Scotland January 2 is also a holiday. Our street is still blissfully quiet today.

biryani · 02/01/2014 10:59

They should at least have let you know in advance if there was going to be noisy work. It would be polite. You could at least make other arrangements for yourself.

I agree too with informing close neighbours of any impending work. People are much more understanding if they know what's going on.

ilovesooty · 02/01/2014 11:09

So the wife came round to agree with you. A handy development. I wonder if she's conflict averse and felt intimidated by your attitude and the prospect of falling out with you? It's another possible explanation.

I think YABU anyway and my opinion was simply reinforced by your attitude over the subsequent posts. I can see you offered an apology but the evidence of your attitude to others was there already.

You obviously thought you were in the right and I think you're still intent on proving it.

Bowlersarm · 02/01/2014 11:16

Is the OP in Scotland?

BuffyxSummers · 02/01/2014 11:52

Bull plop. As if you'd give your keys to the moany bossy neighbour next door.

RockinAroundTheXmasTreeHippy · 02/01/2014 14:08

Bowlers I'm very surprised by that as everywhere else I've dealt with its a no Sunday for noisy works, DIY or otherwise, but if builders are involved I which I think the OP mentioned, they should know the regs & risk a hefty fine, though most will try it on if the property owner puts the pressure on - we had problems with that a while back - 3 weeks from 6am - 10pm all weekend included, we were drive nuts by it - but maybe we were BU for comparing too Hmm

The rules will vary slightly around the country for Saturday hours, which is basically half day only & week day start & finish times - here its 8-6 & 9-12 sat, not at all on a Sunday

RockinAroundTheXmasTreeHippy · 02/01/2014 14:08

Complaining - autocorrect fail

JohnnyBarthes · 02/01/2014 14:11

MissDuke you were NOT in the wrong.
