To wish I could get flu over Xmas?

PaulSmenis · 14/12/2013 22:02

I would just like to spend boxing day and the rest of the week in my own home. I can't even enjoy Xmas day this year 'cause we have to set off so early on boxing day.

I don't mind everyone else going without me, but AIBU to pray for a nasty bout of flu so I can just chill at home rather than making forced polite small talk with people I see maybe twice a year?

YABU, if you catch flu you'll be in bed wishing you were dead not chilling out having a nice time.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 14/12/2013 22:05

I can understand you not wanting to go, but I'd be careful what you wish for, proper 'flu and you won't be "chilling at home" you'll be in bed.

What you need is a d+v bug Christmas Eve, so you feel better by Boxing Day but "couldn't possibly come and visit because I'm following the 48 hour rule and wouldn't want to infect anyone else".

Idespair · 14/12/2013 22:06

I assume you are joking?! You want to shiver and ache and feel like your mind is not working and not be able to shuffle across the room for some nurofen?! Do you then want to feel "not right" for a further 6 weeks?

Yanbu to wish for some sort of excuse but flu is worse than what you have to do!

Financeprincess · 14/12/2013 22:07

Since the age of about 18 I worked out that you get the most out of Christmas by making other people happy. If that means driving miles, talking to older relatives and sleeping in less comfortable conditions than normal, so what?

However, if you have done this for years, I don't believe that a year off would be unreasonable. I don't understand why you need flu as a fig leaf, though?

gleekster · 14/12/2013 22:08

Real flu is horrific. It really does make you feel like you are dying. Why not just say you are ill and don't go. And next year stand up for yourself and say you want to stay home over Christmas!!

CranberrySaucyJack · 14/12/2013 22:09

Haha Finance.

Funnily enough, I worked out the exact opposite around a similar age. I get the most out of Christmas when I do what makes me and my children happy.

QuintessentialShadows · 14/12/2013 22:09

I conclude, that you have never had flu in your life.

Manflu maybe, but not flu.

Wessex · 14/12/2013 22:10

Why can't you spend Christmas in your own home? I hate the pressure that is put on people at this time of year.

I once spent Christmas on my own ( pre DCs and pregnant) and loved it. My DP's family thought I was rather odd.

I realise it's not pleasant for many people who have no choice but to be alone.

I am fully aware of the horrors of flu, the last time I had it was 5 years ago. DP would know if I was just saying I was ill to get out of it, so no chance. I'm just sick of always having Boxing Day and the rest of the week planned for me. I really would rather have flu!

Wessex · 14/12/2013 22:16

Can you not tell your DP that you want to stay at home this year but she is free to go away?

LaurieFairyCake · 14/12/2013 22:16

I've had flu over Christmas - it was so bad I wished for death. Really properly hallucinating with no sleep for 70 hours as I coughed every 45 seconds.

I was not happy to come to a week later and realise the absolute fortune Id spent on it - I never even got to see dd open a present.

BillyBanter · 14/12/2013 22:16

I'd recommend a cold instead. The first couple of days are quite fluey so you can claim that it's flu then downgrade it to a cold once they're too far away to turn back for you.

My name is a little misleadinh Wessex. I am a lady, hence my smenis being very small. DP always visitshis relitives and it would cause political wranglings if I told him I wasn't going at the lst minute. He has organised it all.

I know flu is absolute living hell, but it's the only way I can see of dodging this onerous task. A bad cold would be better. If I find any ill people just before Xmas I'm going to ask them to sneeze in my face or if I can share their tissue - in all seriousness Blush

I told DP tonight that I'm going nowhere next year and if people are that bothered about seeing us they can make the effort to drive here for a change.

I'm so riled about this that I've lost the ability to type properly.

Next saturday get on a bus and lick the windows clean of condensation. Lick your hands after touching all public door handles and handrails then cross your fingers for a lurgy or even two!

PaulSmenis · 14/12/2013 22:28

It works in theory Billy, but I can see myself getting sectioned!

Flu floored me completely 4 years ago. I coughed so badly I kept wetting myself as it had fucked up my pelvic floor. I was off work for 7 days, went back and was told not to return until 3 days later as I'd lost a stone in weight, looked like I'd had a holiday on death row (felt like it too). I had dreams that were mental - absolutely mental. Felt like death would be a good release. I would never wish for that on anyone. I slept on the sofa as I couldn't make it upstairs. Luckily had a downstairs loo.

FunkyBoldRibena · 14/12/2013 22:39

Just say 'actually, you go. Next year, consult me on your plans but this year, I am just having a duvet day'. Which is exactly what we have decided to do instead of hauling ass 250 miles. We will do that the day after.

ds has virus now he is really poorly and we are going on holiday on Monday:( Wish he could lose his!

Freddiefrog · 14/12/2013 22:50

I've only had flu once and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy, let alone myself

You need something fairly painless but will render you housebound for a couple of days

bigbuttons · 14/12/2013 22:56

I have had the flu for the last 3 christmases. It was shit. Luckily this year I got THE cold that is going around mid november, so hopefully no flu for me this year.

bigbuttons · 14/12/2013 22:58

One year I had the flu for 4 weeks. Coughing so violently that I pulled all my stomach muscles. Even when I was 'better' it took WEEKS to fully get over it.
