To be worried about a scan at seven weeks...

mameulah · 13/12/2013 22:27

So, I am a size 18 and in a week I will be approximately seven weeks pregnant. I have scan booked for a week today. This is my third pregnancy. Our first ended with a missed miscarriage.

I really, really want to know that all is well before Christmas.

(I know it is self indulgent and that many, many people have sadness, worry and woe on the baby making front.)

It is a private scan and the woman who took the booking knows all our dates.

Do you reckon they will be able to see something? If I was skin and bones and I wouldn't be so worried.

tia

Hi, I've never had a scan that early that wasn't internal, so I think weight would not make a difference. Good luck, hope it goes well for you. (I have my own early scan on Thursday next week so maybe we can worry together till then)

TheMaw · 13/12/2013 22:31

They should be able to see something, I got a scan at 6 weeks and we saw the heartbeat. It was an internal scan though. It was brilliant! Try to relax and enjoy it (um, not the actual internal scanning, obv, that sounded a bit dodgy!)

asandwichshort · 13/12/2013 22:32

Size 20 at 7 week 2 days and saw a little flicky heartbeat bean- - - BUT only with an intra vaginal scanner!! Small price to pay after earlier miscarriages though! So good luck x

eurochick · 13/12/2013 22:32

I'd expect it to be internal so the weight should not be an issue.

I'm a size 16/18 and had an early scan at 8 weeks, it was external and they could see the heartbeat. Hope it goes well

mameulah · 13/12/2013 22:36

I don't think it will be an internal scan. It is a private place in town and I am sure they only do external scanning. I might phone them tomorrow and check. We saw our pfb's heartbeat at nine weeks. Seven just seems a bit soon. But the women said she thinks it will be fine......I so hope so.

I suppose we will either a) See a heartbeat, hurray!
b)The total opposite, that doesn't bear thinking
about.
c) They will say they don't know and that I have
to go back.

7 weeks external scan - would usually see a heart beat.

Oddsocksrus · 13/12/2013 22:37

I had an external scan at approx 6 weeks, saw a heart beat and I was a size 18
Enjoy, it is very exciting and helps a lot with the anxiety from mc's

lessonsintightropes · 13/12/2013 22:37

Good luck OP. I am TTC at the moment and your size and equally nervous!

mameulah · 13/12/2013 22:37

Thanks everyone!

I had an ultrasound scan at 7 weeks and they found the heartbeat - if I remember correctly I couldn't really see it, so if you can't work out what's on the screen try not to worry, but to the scanner's trained eye all was well. Good luck!

mameulah · 13/12/2013 22:38

I highly recommend the clear blue ovulation test and preseed!

Good luck!

I am using both :) Let us know how the scan goes, we are rooting for you :)

Tapiocapearl · 13/12/2013 22:40

I think sometimes they can see them a bit earlier then 7 weeks with a external scan but I was only ever given 7 weeks as a scan date as staff felt that a heart beat could be usually seen at that point. ISP if you see a heart beat at 7 weeks, the chance of MC reduces a lot. Then reduces more week by week.

JennySense · 13/12/2013 22:41

I had a scan at 6-7 weeks with my youngest [because of miscarriages]. I was a size 18 and the heartbeat was not visible via an external scan, but was via an internal.
If they can't locate a heartbeat via an external, they will ask you to come back in a weeks time.
Personally, I would weigh up whether waiting another week or so would be preferable to the chance of a scan not picking up a heartbeat and the stress and worry you will naturally experience if this is the case.

Tapiocapearl · 13/12/2013 22:41

Tescos own are actually very sensitive too - and cheap

andadietcoke · 13/12/2013 22:44

I had a private scan at 10w after an NHS scan at 7+4 that showed two heartbeats. I had the private one because I read too much about vanishing twin syndrome. Anyway, reason for post was that the private one used a dildo cam too due to the position of one of the babies, so they will do it internally if they need to (and our internal photos of Twin 1 are a lot clearer than the external photos of Twin 2)

Rufustherednosedreindeer · 13/12/2013 22:46

I had a scan at 7weeks. Pretty sure it wax external, itty bitty heartbeat.

As other posters say delaying it by a week would probably make a difference and hopefully before Christmas

Hope it goes well for you

mameulah · 13/12/2013 22:52

The only appointment I can get before Christmas is Friday. If it wasn't for Christmas I would wait. But I just so want to fall head over heels in love with this pregnancy. But with our pfb to look after I know that if it is the worst case scenario then for him I can't really be sad.

I am sure you all know what I mean...

Rufustherednosedreindeer · 13/12/2013 22:58

Take care. Will be thinking of you on Friday

PorkPieandPickle · 13/12/2013 22:58

I had a scan at 7 weeks, it was internal, we saw a heartbeat. AFAIK private companies still do internal scans.

Good luck, have everything crossed for you x

BocaDeTrucha · 13/12/2013 23:10

How exciting!!!!!!!!! We had an internal scan at 7 weeks and heard the heart beat and saw a tiny egg sack, but we're warned not to worry if no heartbeat could be heard at such an early stage. Such a magical time.... Stay positive Smile

softlysoftly · 13/12/2013 23:18

I wouldn't have tbh. I had a mmc with 1st pg and a scare with dd1. Was your size and an internal scan showed a hb but caused bleeding so was all left wondering if the pg would make it until 12 wks.

It's just before xmas if a scan doesn't show a hb that isn't conclusive as it's so early and ypu will be left in trauma waiting. If it does show a hb that still doesn't mean you will make it to 12 weeks (sorry) so "falling in love" work the pg may be dodgy ground.

I'm sure everything will be fine but just hold your horses and find joy in your secret until the normal scan time. X
